Japan's oldest Western-style hotel

The Nikko Kanaya Hotel is the oldest Western-style hotel in Japan and is designated a National Heritage Hotel. Built in 1873, it has many illustrious guests on its guest register eg. President Roosevelt, General Eisenhower, former Prime Ministers of Japan and other dignitaries. Located on top of a hill, the colonial-style hotel has a commanding view of the neighboring mountains and river and is only a 10 minute walk to the shrines. The service level at this hotel is impeccable. It was a rainy day when I trudged up the driveway of the hotel pulling my suitcase and the hotel manager came running out to shield me with an umbrella and carry my suitcase.

Unique Quality: The room is spacious by Japanese standards and furnished with luxurious carpeting and sofas. There is a spacious lounge on the first floor of the hotel where one can relax in the evenings over complimentary coffee or tea. The dining room is exquisite and meals are served on Noritake tableware emblazoned with the hotel crest. As a legacy left over by the British, a billiard table is found behind the lounge. Although there is no onsen at the hotel, a family bath is available.

Nikko Kanaya Hotel

Nikko Kanaya Hotel was established in 1873, or year 6 of the Meiji era, and therefore the oldest continuously operating resort hotel in Japan.

All the rooms are western-style, and have been refurbished.  One of the many striking features of the buildings for both guests and visitors is to take in  the large number of ornate carvings, patterned on those of the nearby Toshogu Shrine, at different places throughout the buildings. This hotel is within walking distance of the Toshogu Shrine.

There are approximately 40 hotels in Nikko with four of them being Western-style. Prices range from Y3,000 with two meals to Y20,000 yen with two meals. In Japan these rates are generally 'per person.'
.

Unique Quality: Restaurant, a coffee shop known for its cakes and a bakery.
