This is a cheap guest house in the Akasaka (original Downtown area). I haven't stayed there as I live in Tokyo, but knowing VTer's are often looking for accommodation tips I thought I would do my best to find some cheap accommodation for Tokyo.

Dorms cost 2,000 yen per person per night (or 13,000 for a week).

A private room (single occupancy) costs 3,500yen per person per night (or 23,000 per week).

A private room (double occupancy) costs 4,500yen per room per day (or 30,000yen per week).

The hotel is in the original downtown area of Asakusa, which would be a great area to stay in.

Please check link to their website below.

  • Shinagawa Prince Hotel New Tower - Tokyo-to
    Shinagawa Prince Hotel
    New Tower
    by Sharrie
My usual preference is Ginza Tobu in Ginza area (Marriott chain) or Metropolitan Crowne Plaza in Ikebukuro. But as I made a last-minute change to my schedule I found many hotels fully booked for the Good Friday weekend!

So, had no choice but to find alternatives.
Shinagawa Prince has more than 3000 rooms in total. Hence, I was lucky to find a room here.

There are 2 towers, main & new. The new one is much better but more expensive by at least 30%. I didn't bother since I know I wouldn't get much sleep. So, was allocated a room in the main tower.

Still, accommodation in Japan is not cheap.
A single room here cost 11500 yen per night (inclusive of the 15% tax). That's the cheapest around here. The room is very small though!
I made my reservation via Hotelbook.com which gives me the option of canceling without charge by 6 pm local time on day of arrival. This is how I prefer although reserving through an agent may give you a cheaper alternative. So, do your own checks.

Shinagawa is south of the city center but the hotel is very conveniently located across the main JR station Shinagawa.

Also, I realised that the limousine bus route to the airport from here is much more smoother & faster than both Ginza Tobu & Metropolitan. Estimated time taken was 75 mins.

It is a self-contained complex with many shops, restaurants & even a bowling alley!

Tokyo station is about 5 km away while Ginza is 6 km away.

The Olympic Inn Azabu is a small and affordable business hotel located at the Minato-Ku suburb of Tokyo. The rooms are clean, staff are friendly and they even have an English website where you can make reservations. You can send the hotel an email in English and they do respond very quickly. Furthermore, the hotel is located near to the Azabu sub-way station which makes travelling rather convenient.

Hotel Villa Fontaine Shiodome: A little posh for a small price
  • Satisfaction:
  • cgutierrez
  • Updated By cgutierrez on November 6, 2007
  • In Tokyo, cramped hotel rooms, small beds and big prices are the norm. Tourist hotels tend to be pretty and convenient facilities with ajoining restaurants and spas. Business hotels on the other hand are not pretty and don't offer any of the frills of the tourist hotel, however the cheaper price definitely reflects that. However, Hotel Villa Fontaine Shiodome is one of the new breeds of business hotels that is offering an appealing environment without the pricepoint of a tourist hotel.

The friendly, english-speaking staff make it easy to communicate if your Japanese is not the best. Hotel rooms are nicely decorated and offer a little more walking space than the average hotel room in Tokyo. The regular rooms have a small LCD screen with free local channels, LAN jacks, a refrigerator, a small table and two chairs. The beds are queen-sized (definitely a rarity in Tokyo) albeit they are the hardest beds I have ever slept on. The seats are also quite stiff which is totally fine as I tend to spend as little time as possible in my room, however it could be a deal breaker if you enjoy staying in among a see of comfy blankets and cushions. Other features include a small closet stocks a complimentary unisex nightgown, slippers, ironing board and iron. The bathroom is small but navicable.

Bad points: At night, this hotel is tough to locate if it's your first time there as it is situated INSIDE an office building 3-4 blocks away from the main train station, although it is located at the doorstep of the Metro rail station. Additionally, if you're lost and trying to find help, many of the locals unfortunately do not know where it is located either. Your best bet is to follow my directions below or print out a map of the location (on the hotel's website) to navigate - if all else fails you can show the map to a local and they should be able to lead you there. Located in a business district, you'll have to take the train to areas of interest, but the station is about a 7-8 minute walk away so it is convenient.

For the price, Hotel Villa Fontaine Shiodome provides nice decor and queen sized beds - a rarity in Tokyo hotels. The hotel also provides free LAN inside the rooms (bring your own cord) and refrigerators to chill your tasty beverages. Aside from the regular bathroom ammenities such as soap and shampoo, Hotel Villa Fontaine also provides a fresh toothbrush, small tube of toothbase and a comb everyday, so no need to bring your entire bathroom cabinet with you when you travel.

Aside from regular rooms, the hotel also has special rooms. The Ladies room offers all the ammenities of a regular room but includes a foot massager and some additional spa products. The relaxation room also provides a foot massager and special "low resistance" pillows. Premier rooms offer more space and some extra furniture - a desk or couch depending on if your room is classified as a "business" room or a "relax" room.

The hotel also offers a free contental breakfast in the lobby during the morning. The breakfast won't win any awards but it is a good option if you don't have enough time to grab breakfast elsewhere or are trying to save money in pricey Tokyo.
