Transport during Japanese holidays

by tony7566

We are travelling to Tokyo in April and our return flight to London is during Golden Week (30th April). Does anyone know if getting from Tokyo to Narita airport is likely to be a problem using public transport on this date? Any other advice about travelling around this period would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

You should be fine. The Narita Express train runs several times a day, and hits the main stations.

If you don't want the NEX train (although is best option) there are busses (about $50) or taxi (about $300 USD).

Most public transportation including airport shuttles and Narita Express runs during the holiday seasons. However, everything would be packed and you may not be able to get on the ones that you'd like to. I highly recommend that you book return transportation at least 2-3 days in advance.

We’ve been to Tokyo. We booked the transport from narita to hotel and return from Canberra through our travel agent. The hotel we stayed gave us information regarding transport and other info we required. We found the public transport in Tokyo is well organised, we didn't have problem apart from communication (only sometimes). You can use taxi's if you want to pay enormous amount.

If you arrive on April 30th, I would not worry at all. The 29th is the big rush OUT of Tokyo. The 30th isn't as bad, plus you are going to Tokyo, so you should be against the rush.

My only concern is travel within Japan. Tokyo will be fine in this period, but if you plan to go to Kyoto and so on, I'd advise you to book the tickets once you arrive as well. May 5th will probably be the biggest problem, but so could the 8th. With the 6th being Friday, a regular day, it might make things a bit easier for the return rush as some people will take Friday off as well and extend their vacation. Others won't be allowed. May 3rd is also a wildcard as it's the start of a 3 day holiday, so it might be tough to book tickets.

Travel Tips for Tokyo

Banks

by Josilver

Non Japanes card do not work in most japanese ATMs. The only ones that will work are Post office ATMs or international banks such as CitiBank, or so I'm told (by agood tour guide) at JR ATMs in train stations. So if you are heading out into the country side if might be a good idea to get your money out before you go. Some hostels & ryokans do not accept credit cards either.

I'd take someone to the Imperial Hotel, which is one of the most beautiful hotels I've ever lodged. The Artsphere Theater was very beautiful, where I performed for an entire week. Performing at the Artsphere Theater to me was fun.

TOKYO DOME

by Adeline_Foo

The Tokyo Dome area will be even more fun in Year 2003. Currently they are building a very BIG theme park with a very longggggg rollercoaster ride! There are even a spa in the theme park! Amazing right! I will definately go back in Year 2003 when the theme park opens! ;-)

This flower is stronger that Sakura. while the most famous flower of the Archipelago is scattered by mild winds, this flower stays and smiles to those who care for her. Her name? Imagine the exit of any of the subway stations in any of the big cities you have ever visited. Imagine now this flower welcome you at the exit (or entrance, that all is relatice in this life) of one of the busiest district of the monster city that Tokyo is. Miracles?!!! Yeah, yeah...

Carry a washcloth- hand washing

by angelab_nyc

Paper towels are unheard of in Japanese public bathrooms. Most carry special washclothes to dry their hands. Kleenex is always distributed for free in the street ( form of advertising), so make sure to accept a pack or two, as the tissue will come in handy ( no pun intended)!
