When is rush hour ?
by MarieBernas
Can you please tell me at what times are rush hours ? Thank you !
Re: When is rush hour ?
by Bilimari
It's always clouded in Tokyo, but it gets absolutely crazy from 7:30am to 9am and from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. The time may vary a bit depending if you are on a train/metro or on the road.

The peak of rush hour is from 8-9AM and 5-6PM. Generally the best time to travel is midday and evening/night.

It may depend on the line a bit, but mornings here are always the most crowded.
The commute home is always more spaced out (people finishing at different times, going drinking etc.), so on the line I use, I can often get a seat for most of the way home.
Travel Tips for Tokyo
Running in the station.
by cksea
Make use of locker in all major station. I helps a lot if you wish to travel light. The locker is big enough for a backpack. Anyway, don't forget to "people watching" when you reach the station. Haha, it's linda fun. So many of them running around. No kidding, they are running! Price starts from 300 to 100yen. Expensive? Consider the energy and trouble you save.
Pachinko
by vigi
I do not understand Pachinko... and why people spend few hours sitting down there looking at the machine. My friend told me this is a kind of gambling, one can exchange for money, charlolate, biscuits, toys, etc with the metal balls.
This one is located in Koiwa, a suburb small town. Most shops closed at 8-9pm, while this 2 storey Pachinko still open and fully packed with customers, amazing!
Kamakura (day trip from Tokyo)
by sunnywong
An ancient seaside city with famous temples and shrines. Kamakura was the seat of the first shogunate from 1192 and still retains a great deal of traditional charm.
What to see and do: See the Great Buddha, one of the largest open-air Buddhas in the world; visit Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine; hike the hills from Kita-kamakura Stn to Kamakura Stn visiting temples on the way.
Access: 1 hr from Tokyo Stn by JR Yokosuka Line. The Great Buddha, 735-year-old, 38-foot-tall, 500-ton bronze statue, towers in Kamakura's Kotokuin Temple.

Westerners, You Don't Need to Tip!
by Breen
I had someone run out of a bar after me when I left a nice tip, I had forgotten that you do not need to leave a tip for the waiters and waitresses in restaurents, they almost don't know what to do with it sometimes. I was wondering why I kept getting weird looks the first few days I was there! LOL
