Toyoko-inn chain
by norha1
What can one say about this medium range price chain hotels?
Re: Toyoko-inn chain
by SfumatoPants
Toyoko-inn is under a cloud at the moment for not providing enough safety for their female employees after a hotel manager was sexually assaulted by a guest and had no other staff members to help her. In order to save money the hotel routinely leaves women employees alone on night shifts without security support. Not the kind of place I want to spend my money.

I never heard about the staff problems, but in terms of the hotel itself, it's not bad. I haven't been to one in a long while though. Toyoko Inn has the typical small rooms of Japan, but they are clean. I found the staff to be very helpful, but the breakfast isn't good, but it's free. The major problem is that these hotels tend to be in poor locations, unless it's a small town.

Hello, there!
My wife and I spent a month in Japan last year and we had a very good experience in Toyoko-Inn chain. Some facts:
- Indeed, there are only female employees, but this doesn't compromise guest security. Japan is a very secure country and it is unlikely to be an issue.
- Japanese-style breakfast is free, but it is the same meal all over the chain: rice and curry and misso, basically.
- Rooms are small but clean and functional
- Hotels are located near (within walking distance) Train stations, in general. However, they are not the best tourist spots. One should do a good research before.
- There are washing machines, which are very handy.
- Good cost-benefit, compared to other accommodation options.
In short, we had a good experience in Toyoko-inn hotels, specially in Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Sapporo, Asahikawa, Tokyo (Asakusa). Highly recommended.
Cheers,
Sidney
Travel Tips for Tokyo
Preparation Before you leave
by leanne_pearc
Some cities you can go to and just easily navigate and never have a problem, Tokyo is not this city. A little preparation will go a long way. It will also save you so much time! I recommend the following:
1. Guide book
2. Train line map. Make yourself aware of the train station near your hotel.Make yourself aware of the train lines that you may travel on.
3. Ensure the guide book has some basic Japanese phrases
4. Print or write down your hotel name in Japanese
Visit the Emperors Palace, and...
by tfly
Visit the Emperors Palace, and visit Shinjiku. Then spend a day walking the city streets of Tokyo. The people are the most friendly in the world in my opinion. The train system is the worlds best and you can get to/from most place on the train with no need to rent a car. Driving is tough in Tokyo. The people. They are very kind to visitors.
New trains along Yamanote Line
by vincentf
If you encounter the new sleek trains (E231 series) on the JR Yamanote Line, you'll be informed by both Japanese and English announcements. On top of each door, these LCD displays show you the entire loop and how long it takes to reach the destination.
The LCD screen will also display the local weather, news and best of all, baseball box scores!

This city may be crowded enough to make New York seem like a quiet city, but its crime rate is lower than any other city in the world. In Tokyo crime is something that the average person rarely has to think about.
Dining in a restaurant seems to be easy
by Alain_Smeets
You need to experience the dining in a Japanese restaurant once in your life. Try to imagine the following, you don’t speak the language and you can’t communicate with them.
How to order in their Japanese menu, seems difficult, but it can be easy. Most restaurants have a plastic display of the food and you can say the number of the food that you want to eat and they will bring it to you once it’s cooked.
But wait a minute a beer, yes that is on display too, but the English number are to difficult so the pointing game starts and when they note everything down, they smile because they made another customer happy.
And when they bring the dish, well it looks just like the plastic display, but it tastes very good.
