What you pay is what you get

This is my second stay to the Shiba Park Hotel in Tokyo.
The hotel is somewhat cheaper than most hotels in this area, but it's decent enough.
The rooms are typical Japanese hotel rooms, which means Small, and Small. The bathrooms on the other hand, are very small. Anyone who's been to other hotels in Asia cannot ignore the extremes. I just came back from Taiwan, and the bathroom where i've stayed was as big as the 80% of the room in the Shiba Park Hotel.
There is another unique feature to the Shiba Park Hotel, No in room Internet. There's a small public area where you can connect to the Internet for free, and this is where this review is taking place...
The rooms themselves, other than being small, are clean, although there's a very faint trace to this hotel was operational when the planet was the smokers heaven (whereas today, the streets are banned for them as well).
Breakfast is satisfactory, with the combination of Japanese and western, you'll find eggs and sausage and the sorts.
They have a Friday night Jazz at the In hotel bar, which is not too bad a pass the time venue.

Unique Quality: - Cheaper than most hotels in the area.
- Public Area Internet

Don't stay during hot weather

The room, for us at $140 a night, was the size of a walk-in closet with the narrowest of "twin" beds. Old bedding, dirty chair upholstery, peeling wallpaper, unvacuumed carpeting, it wasn't what we expected from a place charging more than twice than the nice Holiday Inn in Narita where we'd just come from.

Air conditioning didn't remove moisture, never got below 78 damp degrees in our first room. We ***ed and got a cooler room that just happened to be bigger, too. Other than the dirty carpet which we asked three days in a row to be vacuumed, and the air conditioner in the ceiling dripping into the back of the television, the second room was a nice room. The owners are not putting their profits back into the hotel rooms. The lobby, of course, was perfectly cool and dry. Hotels.com gave it a 3-star at the beginning of July. It recently changed that rating to 2 stars, and that was before I complained.

Other posters are right about the nice staff. How can that be helped? After all, you're in Japan. Everyone is polite. And the proximity to Tokyo Tower and the train station was fortunate.

Unique Quality: A small piece of cake at the hotel is only $5. (Compare that to a $15 cup of coffee priced to keep the tourists away at Four Seasons Hotel in Tokyo.) Shiba Park also has a good location. Our best find: there's an AM/PM on the next corner (similar to 7-11) with the best prepackaged pastry I've ever had...7-11 pastries can't compare. And the AM/PM sweet bean paddies were fantastic. Pastries and paddies for only 100 yen (89 cents?). Beats blowing $10 for a couple of small pieces of cake when you've got jet-lag munchies.

A pleasant stay

The Shiba Park hotel is just a short walk from Tokyo Tower and not too far away from a train station (I forget the name unfortunately). When we first arrived at the hotel we were gawping about as we made our way with the suitcases up the 3 steps into reception. The bellboy then rushed out and apologised profusely for not coming to help us which surprised us as we are both very capable. Japanese people are very polite and helpful.

Our room was situated in a different building from the main reception. The rooms are pretty small but they still have a fridge and tv etc. The view wasn't a stunning city scape like you might expect from Lost In Translation but then you don't go to a city as exciting as Tokyo for the view from your hotel room ;-)

Unique Quality: We didn't really use much in the way of hotel facilities, just internet and vending machines. The computers all had coin operated boxes and were located not too far from reception.

Shiba Park Hotel Tokyo Japan

Located in the city of Tokyo, this elegant property is just few minutes drive from the Monorail Hamamatsucho Station, Daimon Station on the Toei Subway Line and 30 minutes drive from the Haneda Airport.
