Sekisho-in: Great experience

Sekisho-in is a nice temple hotel. The rooms are great and spacious. The shared toilets are high tech. Food was great!

Koyasan Youth Hostel: Spare Yet Inexpensive, Friendly Hostel

We stayed in an attic room with a waist-high door and a neck-high hallway. There were massive beams running through the room at waist-height, but all the same the room was charming. We slept on the floor perfectly comfortably, and the night was very quiet and peaceful. There was a bit of awkwardness always ducking under the beams to get around, but it was all part of the fun. Although we didn't really use them, the room came equipped with all the comforts of home: a desk, table, chairs (all on the floor), TV, lamp...etc.,etc..
Our room was a bit more expensive than the standard, which are shared dorm-style rooms.

Unique Quality: Very Japanese in style, this hostel has paper walls and floors covered with woven tatami mats. The host and hostess are very friendly although their English is spare. There is a beautiful little garden, and the house itself is generally very quiet. There are free bicycles (for borrowing) and a computer with free internet access. The other guests we met were very friendly and relaxed. Although it's not a temple, the price is cheaper and the atmosphere is well worth it.

Various: Try a temple stay

There are various temples in Koya that offer temple stays, so my beloved arranged one for us. It was fine, but no meat and no alcohol is not really my thing. Still, it's an interesting thing to do.
