Members in Almatty. Help! Phone numbers/email for budget Hotels....

by newsshooter

I will be sending my fiancee to Almaty in December for her K-1 Visa interview at US Consulate.

We are having a difficult time trying to get info on some budget/low cost hotels (* Less than $55 per night) in Almaty as most of the internet listing for these hotels seem to be old and their phone numbers have changed.

For example: Hotel Issyk/Luch, Hotel Miras, Hotel Saltanat, Hotel Aliya, etc...

We have contacted; Uyut, Kazzhol, Zhetzyu --- but they all seem to want to charge more than their internet advertised rates.

If you know of something safe, decent, that may or may not have a continental breakfast and is not to far from city center and has single economy rooms under 6500 Tenge -OR- You can tell me the current phone numbers/email address of the hotels listed above, or any other budget hotel. IT WOULD BE A BIG HELP!!!!!!

Thanks :o)

I know you said you checked out Uyut, Kazzhol and Zhetzu already, but those three are right in the center of the city, close to each other... close to pretty much anything your fiancee would want to do. I personally have stayed at all three of those. A little expensive, but good service. Kazzhol and Uyut are in a quet area, where as Zhetisu iz on a pretty busy street. There is a hotel a friend of mine stayed at, but I cannot remember the name. It was off of Tole Bi street. If you have access to any sort of listing, I hope you will be able to find it.
Sorry, but I cannot help with any more info. This is all I know.
Good Luck

We mostly speak Russian, not Kazakh

by Bubr

According to the CIA world factbook, 64% of the population speak Kazakh, 95% speak Russian (2001 est.), but it seems to me that even less people speak Kazakh, at least fluently. Anyway, if you use a Russian phrase-book, you are much more likely to be understood than if you use Kazakh.

Chances of meeting an English speaking person in most stores/restaurants and in transport are pretty low. If you need one, there are more English speakers among young people, because the idea of learning English at high school is much stronger last years.

By the way, do you need a proffessional Russian-as-a-foreign-language instructor with over 20 years of experience in Alma-Ata? I know a good one - email me :)))

Patinage à Médéo

by Klod5

TO 500 m upstream, go up to Tchimboulak, one of the skiing sites of the central Asia (the summery period for this sport spreads from November to April).

2008 Olympic Torch Relay started in Almaty

by WorldPassenger

I arrived into Almaty on April 2, 2008 which was also the same day that the Olympic torch, for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, started its way around the globe. This was a great day for Almaty and Kazakhstan because for the first time in history Almaty had the honor to be the initial city on the schedule for the Olympic Torch Relay.

Although I did not get to see it, everyone in town was talking about it. In fact our taxi ride from the airport to the hotel encountered less than normal traffic because thousands of people went to see the Olympic Torch carried down the streets of Almaty.

The start of this relay began in the Medeu Valley at the famous Medeu Skating Rink.

The next day as I was driven up to see the skating rink and the dam we could see all of the signs and the safeguards that had greeted the spectators and the torch bearers alike.

It was a very joyous time in Almaty.

Almaty made a bid for the 2014 Olympic Games but came up short. However, they will be hosting the 2011 Asian Winter Games. So Almaty is gaining experience and probably one day will be host for an Olympic Games.

By Sea and River

Kazakhstan's section of the Caspian Sea has two ports,Aktau and Bautino. In total, there are three seaports in the country.Other than the Caspian,Kazakhstan does not have access to the sea.
The port of Aktau,on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea,is operational all year round. It is the only seaport in the country used for international shipping of dry goods, crude oil and petroleum products to Iran,Baku,Astrakhan and Europe through the Volga-Don canal and the Dunai system.
Atyrau river port is located 60 km from the mounth of the Ural river. It operates approximately 200 days of the year has access to the Caspian Sea through the sea channel.
