Climate

Climatically Astana is one of the coldest capitals in the world, with temperatures of -35 to -40 °C common in the late autumn. The new city is also known to regularly freeze for around six months every year. Overall however, Astana has a continental climate, with exceptionally cold winters and moderately hot summers, arid and semiarid.

The average annual temperature in Astana is 1 degree Celsius. January is the coldest month with an average temperature of -16 °C. July is the hottest month with an average temperature of 20 °C

The monument

Close to the end of embankment promenade there is a monument to Kenesary Khan, the national hero of the new Kasakh state. He is got famous for fighting against tsarist russian army in 1830-1840s for resuming of khan ruling. He was a very controversial character, who apart from defending Kazakh suverenity was known as one of the most cruel military man in the worlds history.

On the way from airport

This picture was taken on the way from airport to the city. You can see new mosque (under construction) and some big office buildings. To fill it just imagine that there was -30'C (minus thirty) outdoors. Brrrr...

Astana - building and constructing at any cost

Astana is the booming Kazakh metropole, a constant building site with new skyscrapers being erected every where. Now, while it seems that money is of no issue the finishing touches and quality sometimes aren't really what they could be.

You cannot argue about style, but then again if you have a site like the Duman (an entertainment centre, see photo) which started its activity in 2003 you have to ask yourself was it built like that in this decade or in earlier ones and they just decided to use the given premises and not to build a new one?

"New Dubai"

Coming 1st time to Astana, the new Kazakh capital, strikes ones sight with miracleous growing and expansion of the city. Just a decade ago it was a small town, lost somewhere in the middle of vast stepps. Now it's one of the fastest growing cities in Asia, it's new Dubai which is being build on oil.
