by traveldave Bartogai Lake Camp is set up and run by Kan Tengri Mountain Service for those clients who are engaged in such eco-tourism activities as birdwatching, trekking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, or observing the country's botanical specialties. Bartogai Lake is a reservoir at the base of the Tien Shan Mountains in the Sugaty Valley, about two hours east of Almaty.
Spacious tents contain comfortable cots, mattresses, and pillows (although clients must provide their own sleeping bags). Meals are prepared by camp staff and are taken in mess tents that have electric lighting thanks to a generator. Shower tents are available, although when I was there, it was too cold to take a shower--members of my group waited until we went to the Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory to clean up. In a tent out along a lake! Then you know how freedom is. No facilitie's just you and nature! There are some streams here so you can take a shower, enough bushes as toilet. You can take some cooking stuff and food and have an excellent stay here! The observatory near Big Almaty Lake is also a trill to see! Staying here is just fanatastic! Theme: Other

Stay in a home, it is the only way to see life there. There are some large soviet style hotels in Almaty, but a guest house is the only way to feel the people. Kazakhs are warm and friendly even in the winter. A short drive and any local can find nomads in the steppes, living a life unchanged by centuries.
