view from Alatau...

view from Alatau Sanatorium

I lived in a large 'penthouse' apartment, then, later, in an apartment in the 'Military Settlement' area, but I would stay, if a tourist, in the Dostyk Hotel, formerly reserved for (Kazakhstan) Communist Party Central Committee members and authorized persons I rather like the quiet, neo-Stalinist style .A place nearby and also worth looking at is the former Residence No.3, now also open to the public (accessed via an obscure barricaded entrance almost opposite the British/French/German Embassy building on Furmanova: cross the street and about 20 yards or so uphill). This has a summer-only open air cafe in a beautiful, quiet, garden and, thanks to high prices (in 1997, US$6 for an imported beer..) usually empty of customers! Brezhnev stayed in this place on a regular basis

If I were staying a month or more, would rent an apartment (when I was there, maybe $700-1,000 for a really good one (US$)). Via connections, NOT agencies.

THE best place to stay is the former Alatau Sanatorium, now Country Club, but this is outside Almaty by about 10 miles. This was formerly reserved for Soviet Politburo members; Brezhnev was apparently a frequent visitor. It now has a golf course (9 holes), swimming pools, French restaurant and costs hundreds of dollars per day, as do the Rachat Palace/Hyatt and, a bit cheaper, 5-star Ankara [see pic]

Starting with most expensive: Alatau Country Club, Hyatt, Ankara, Dostyk, Kazakhstan (best avoided: little for your money except a view; teenage Kazakh prostitutes accost all men after dark, at the entrance), Astana. There are numerous other hotels which are mostly cheaper, less clean, less safe. The old Intourist hotel, now renamed 'Otrar', on the north side of Panfilov Park, is probably the best of the rest. The Indo-Pakistani (NOT main) restaurant is good and not expensive, but the hotel itself is a gloomy place.

The Dostyk is not a place favoured by loud business types from the US or Israel, yapping into mobile telephones (whereas the Rachat Palace/Hyatt is)...set back from the road behind classical columns in the Stalin style (although built in 1986). Spacious public areas; not bad restaurant either (also white columns), though the wine list is a bit suspect, to say the least.

Housing in Kazakh cities tends to be either fairly ugly apartment buildings (the same ones you can find all over the FSU) or little whitewashed houses like this one.

If you'll come to Almaty you...

If you'll come to Almaty you could choose any kind of living. But really, the most widespread kind of dwelling is hotels and private flats.
If you prefer the first kind of living, i could say that in our city there are a lot of hotels. All of them are different, some of them are very expencive and comfortable, some of them are not good.

So I'd like to make a list of hotels which are situated in our city with their adresses and phone numbers.
1. Hyatt Regency (Rachat Palace) adress. Baitursinov street, 133 (phon numder 507050)
2.The Regent Ankara, adress:Jeltoksan st. 181 (p/n 503711, 503710)(on the picture)
3. Kazakhstan, adress:Dostik avenue, 52 (p/n 919101,
919102, 919103,)
4. Issyk hotel, adress:Bogenbai batir str. 140 (p/n 600211, 696637)
5. Dostik hotel, adress:Kyrmangazi str. 36 (p/n 582270)
6. Almaty hotel, adress: Kabanbai batir str. 85 (p/n 630943)
7. Astana International hotel, adress: Baitursinov str. 113 (p/n 507050)
8.Premier Alatau international hotel, adress:Dostik avenue, 105 (p/n 581111)
9. Munaishi hotel, adress:Amangeldi str, 49-a (p/n 628666, 628835)
10. International Premier Medeo, adress: Gornaya str., 582-a (p/n 502007, 502357)
I think that this are the most popular hotels in the city.
If you would like to rent a flat you could find it in any district. The prices are different and vary from the number of room, reair, whereabouts and so on.
If you would like to rent a flat you should buy any advertising paper and there you'll see a great amount of offers for rentig a flat.
