Friendship Guest House: Just OK for a night
This guest house is along the main road in the town, near to the road that comes up the hill from the ferry dock and immigration office. It was rather noisy with people running around and loud music being played on the rooftop in celebration of something or someone's birthday plus the staff/owners hardly speak any English. The room I had was large but a bit past its best with 2 single beds pushed together, tiled floor, fan, old TV where I couldn't get a picture, small dressing table. The bathroom had an electric hot water shower but the toilet had no lid and you had to pull a chord to flush it plus the extractor fan was surrounded by cobwebs plus wasn't all that clean elsewhere. It's OK for just one night but I think better places can be found in town. It cost me 200 baht.

BAP Guesthouse: Biggest Ripoff in Laos
I just want to confirm what others have said here and elsewhere about BAP guesthouse in Houayxai in Laos - it is run by an older woman who is interested in nothing else but ripping off tourists. She offers help which means she takes control of your journey and you find yourself handing over way too much money.
There are many good people in Laos. She is not one of them.
Unique Quality: Nothing good about this place, even if it wasn't run by someone trying to rip people off.

Thaveesinh Hotel: Best you can find!
We only stayed one night in this hotel. It looks very pretty, but it's Laotian style. My husband discovered a "Hello Kitty" blanket on his bed. We laughed a lot about this.
Look at the curtains in the room, they look very "stylish", and you cannot close them.
But the beds are Ok, and the vieuw from the roof is very impressive. Room is clean, and the shower is hot too.
You look over the Mekong river to Chiang Khong in Thailand.
They serve breakfast on the rooftop, with a spectacular vieuw. Breakfast is not included.
We payed 600 thai Bath for a room
Unique Quality: Rooftop restaurant with spectacular vieuw

Numkongview Guesthouse: Nice riverside location
Stayed in room 004 Oct '07, Bt300. Great view of the river and a nice balcony. No air con rooms here. Very friendly owner. Nice, shady restaurant with a small English-language menu. Basic food - good and cheap too. Sgl/dbl - Bt200, Tpl - Bt250, Tpl w/tv - Bt300. All rooms I looked at were very clean and recently painted with nice tile floors. Beds were firm but not concrete shelves as in some places. My room, a triple, had a large double bed and a single. Hot water is solar so takes a minute or so to come down from the roof. Clean linens and blankets. Screens on windows were good so no mossie problem. About 100m or so from the boat landing across from the school. My only complaint would be the nocturnal roosters who seemed to think I need to wake at 4 am. I will definitely stay here again!
Unique Quality: Great views
