Don't know: Pak Bengs Third Finest

We had been warned of all the inconveniences that we would experience at the guesthouse, and they were partly true. Power stayed on after 7.00pm,the chill seemed missing from the shower, the bedding seemed fresh. What more can you want? Anyway, it's only overnight. Breakfast was a baguette, 2 fried eggs and some lao coffee, with the spoon still standing upright. The menu was restricted but the view up the Mekong was stunning.

bunmy guesthouse: a vew over the Mekong

Definitly one of the best guesthouses in Packbeng - and yet still very simple but cosy: the colourful mosquito nets are very cheerful. 200 baht for a double (about 5.50 $)

Private bathroom with shower AND hot water. Very rare in Packbeng! No air-con but fans, which are turned off at around 10.30 PM anyway, since the owners switch off the generator.

Luang Say Lodge: Among the bests in Town :)

On the left bank of the river (when coming from North) Luang Say Lodge offers a perfect romantic interior, very nice restaurant, exellent view along to the Mekong, rolling fan cooling :), insect covers in the beds, bamboo challets and quiet (like in junggle) environment to relax.

Don't be surprised with electric cut-offs, my strong recommendation is that you include some Maglite to you hand luggage, so you are not totally blind during these hours.

If there are more than 20 passengers, you might be surprised with life performance. This mean some ethnic minority dance performances in the restaurant area. The performers are a school children, local villagers and Luang Say Lodge staff.

Syvongsak Guesthouse: New and clean

We were greeted by the myriad of people as we arrived, tired and river weary to Pak Beng, and were led up the road to this guesthouse. It was brand new, and, therefore quite clean and pleasant. Generator power went almost all night, but did not affect sleep. Room had no other furniture but a bed, but none really needed in transit.

The owner turned out to own the restaurant we happened to wander into for dinner. A good breakfast and lunch were provided for the remainder of our trip to Huay Xai.

We paid about US$7 for the accommodation here.

Pakbeng Guesthouse & Restaurant: Simple, fan rooms with cold water showers

When you arrive off the boat in Pak Beng, you'll be greeted with guys trying to entice you to stay at their guesthouse by showing you photos. One guy came up to me and showed some photos of his guesthouse and I decided to go with him and take a look. The aptly named Pakbeng Guesthouse is one of a few places located along the road that leaves the dock, on the left hand side. It's a fairly simple place as they all are but it was clean, new looking with no marks on the walls so I took it. My room came with a fan, cold water shower and a large double bed and cost 200 baht (Thai baht are accepted here). The guesthouse also has a restaurant at the front where I had breakfast in the morning plus they also do a take-away sandwich service.

Monsavan Guesthouses: Guesthouse

This guesthouse is brutally simple, with extremely thin walls made of bambo(so probabaly no in and out). It really a give a great rustic feel to it and has nice clean toilets.
i paid about $2 for a night which was very reasanble, there where no rats as well which was a positive.
