Rivertime Resort and Ecolodge: Relaxing riverside location

by pythagnz

The bungalows at Rivertime Lodge are nestled in the trees with views of the Nam Ngum river. In fact, you take your meals on the river at the floating restaurant. The bungalows are tidy and well-provisioned with table and chairs and a private sitting out area. The bathrooms are special with pebble floors allowing the water to filter through naturally. There are plenty of activities to do, or not, as you choose. A short 15 min forest walk and a children's playground are available onsite or you can cross the river for a short guided forest and village walk. Internet is free for guests. The staff are friendly and helpful. This was a great place to stay at the beginning of my trip and would also make a great place to finish a trip for a couple of days of relaxing.

Tadlo Lodge: Fabulous TadLo

by RVKiwi

This place is fantastic! It's about 80km from Pakse, the bus will drop you off a couple of km from the village - walk. We planned on staying at Tim's but so it appeared did everyone else, we loooked in at the other places but none of them appealed and finally arrived at the most expensive - Tadlo lodge. For US$20 incl b'fast we took it for two nights. Really, really nice. Once again views to the river, and the peace and quiet we'd grown accustomed to by avoiding the regular backpacker accoms. The owner was an excellent guy (thai i think) and his young apprentice who served out fabulous b'fast was ever so endearing. There's not much to do except relax, take a dip in the river, go for an elephant ride. But it's nice. Watch out for the mozzies though! Our bathroom was just lovely but we couldn't enjoy it for the buffalo sized mozzies who multiplied on entry! The owner will kindly come and spray as many times as you ask:).

Lovely views to the river. The restaurant is excellent and the service very very good.

Can't remember the name: Nong Khiaw piece of luxury

by RVKiwi

Fantastic! A beautiful bus trip from Luang Prabang and we arrive in Nong Khiaw. Where you get off the bus, walk across the bridge and on the left hand side is the hotel we stayed at. I can't remember the name but you won't miss it as it's the only one on the left. Take the path and go to the reception/restaurant. We got a brand new bungalow here for US$20. The bungalows are super large with a two double french doors opening out on to the balcony. The view is incredible, again looking over the river and across to the karst mountains. Breath taking. The bed was a four poster a very comfortable. The bathroom - beautiful. When we stayed they were still building more bungalows, things move slowly in Laos so they could still be building them now! The price we got was really good, another couple checked in just before us and paid $25 for the same type of room. It's worth it, and b'fast is included. We ate in the had dinner and lunch in the restaurant and a few beers, it's really nice there and the employees are friendly and helpful.

The views are stunning. The quality of the rooms fantastic. Treat yourselves.

Bungalow Thavonsouk: Vang Vieng

by RVKiwi

Tumbling off the bus from Vientiane on a disused airport runway a couple of touts meet us eager to tell us about their accomodation on offer. Don't imagine for a second that this is anything like getting off the bus in Thailand or Cambodia, the touts are gentle and respectful here. We looked at a colour brochure for Bungalow Thavonsouk, close to the river and prices quoted US$3-8 we eagerly boarded the guys jumbo and so glad we did! Everything is close in Vang Vieng, if you know where you're staying it's not a long walk, so the ride took only a minute or so to a riverside location. We chose a bungalow set back about 20m from the river, with uninterrupted views of the glorious mt range for $8! The room had a very comfortable double bed wutg mosquito net which we didn't need to use. There was a fan which we didn't need either as it's fairly cool at night there (june). The rooms are a little damp and musty but you'd be hard pressed to avoid that in Laos. The room is fronted with large windows looking out to a gorgeous view. The attached toilet and shower is indeed basic, but clean and functional. There is a verandha also. You can get a non-view bungalow for $4 but why not spend the extra money? it's very quiet here, away from the 'tv bars' and backpackers. The restaurant is on a deck over the river and serves good food. I forget whether b'fast was included but it's cheap enough not to worry either way. I definately recommend this place. During high season expect to pay at least double the price we got.

The view is outstanding and the sunrise and sunset gorgeous from the room and also from the restaurant.

Riverside Hotel: Vientiane lodgings

by RVKiwi

This place is what i rate as 'just fine' meaning it's very clean, beds are comfortable, is secure, and the price is 'fine'. Our first visit we took a double room with a window looking at a brick wall for US$16. We were far too hot and sweaty to bargain and after a quick inspection we took it for two nights. The air-conditioning is very welcome. I would recommend this hotel to business travellers or budget travellers like ourselves. Yes you can stay in a backpackers hostel/guesthouse down the road for a couple of dollars, but trust me it's worth spending the extra money now if you plan on being in Laos for long. Only thing is b'fast is not included, but you can grab a yummy filled baguette down the road for next to nothing so it's not a major issue. You can organise visa's and bus tickets at hotel reception but they're not particularly personable so we chose to go elsewhere.

We came back for one night on our way back through Vientiane and this time paid $20 for a river view room. We had to call down to reception to have our towels changed upon check-in as they didn't look too clean, but other than that it was fine. But i think $16 is really all the hotel is worth.

Auberge 3 Nagas: Luang Prabang secret...

by glasstech

June 27th '06 we arrived in Luang Prabang and to our hotel late afternoon. An old french villa that had been renovated and turned into a boutique hotel. With 7 rooms only, all in wood floors and beautiful furniture there was a great feeling to this hotel. The restaurant was amazing and had the best pastries I have eaten any where. Nice people, good service, great location for down town and perfect for offering morning rice to the barefooted monks at dawn. A truley amazing experience.

Pakbeng Lodge - Pakbeng: Comfy perch over the mighty Mekong

by glasstech

We arrived at the lodge just before sunset and were still able to enjoy some cold beers and lao-lao while over looking the Mekong below. Very simple accommodation run by a french guy who was always ready to help. Dinner was on the terrace. Rooms were very simple but comfy for the one night.
