A comfortable Surprise

I stayed for about three or four days at the Phousi Hotel. It is just down the road from Mt. Phousi, where everyone goes to watch the sunset. It is comfortable, clean, western toilets and private baths, and a great view depending on your room.

You should be able to get to the night market, morning monk procession, the Mekong of any of a number of stores and shops in minutes by foot. It is in the heart of the downtown area and you will find it easy to catch a cab from.

The service is courteouse, the food is good and it was at one time the Old Governor's Mansion when the French ran the Country.

Unique Quality: A lot of wood treatment and old fashioned charm, nice screens on the windows, a large enought bath and plenty of light and comfort.

The room ran about $36 a night US in 2003. An inexpensive laundry was an added plus. Dining faciitites were comfortable.

Friendly Hotel in the Center of Town

Highly recommend this hotel. Excellend location close to the night market and Phousi Hill. Rooms are clean and comfortable with air conditioning. Staff is very friendly!

Unique Quality: At 5:30 am or so the monks pass infront of the hotel to collect their daily food offerings from the people.

For early birds

by mvdwater

You have to get up real early, but it's worth it!

In the early morning, the monks of Luang Prabang walk to the streets. The Lao people give them food, like rice, and put it
in their bowls. It's a great thing to see.

Go to the Th Chao Fa Ngum / Sisophon street (on the corner of the Phousi Hotel), around 6.00 am

Small bar

by mcgruff75044 about Who remembers names?

This is a small bar with an outside patio that attracts most tourists and ex pats. It is on the other side of the strett from and between the Phousi Hotel and Mount Phousi. You will find it easily with a little walking.

The beer is cold and they serve Lai Lai. I cannot divulge how Lai Lai is made, trade secret, but it is the favored whiskey of Laos. Aged over 6 days sometimes. Try a few shots and say good night Gracey. No, if your a male jeans are fine.

Greetings!
Anyone have advise on a mid-rage accomodation in Luang Prabang with a swimming pool? Or a place near the town as we will probably rent a moterbike so a close jaunt to town will be no problem.
Many thanks!

How much do you want to pay per night? Mid-range is sort of an arbitrary price range.

There are several hotels in many price ranges from around $10 on up to over $60 per night (U.S.) A pool limits the choices available for the cheaper places. Some expensive hotels may be further away from the town center. However, you should be able to get a hotel around $50 or less, within walking distance of many places in town.

I used a cheap place (under $10) the Phousi Guest House, located 40/7 Ran Choumkhong, Almost across from the museum on Sisavangvong Road. The room had air, private toilet, maid service TV, price now should still be under $20. Two other hotels that I did not stay at but have their cards are the Phousi Hotel on Setthathirat Road and the New Luang Prabang Hotel on Sisavang Vong Road. Price range a few years ago was around under $35 (U.S.)

HI! Denise:

Have just returned from LP. Temperature is currently between 20-25C and falling cooler in the early mornings and nights. Not sure if a swimming pool is exactly what you're looking for....well at least for this month a LP is in transit from the wet into the dry.

I stayed at the Ancient Luang Prabang Hotel - 12 rooms, great location, cosy and comfy but no pool. You can try the tub perhaps? (grin)

Another great place, still no pool, more budget but immaculately clean is the LP Bakery Guesthouse: http://re-evo.com/

I tried to get this place but the rooms are booked out in advance:\

Walked past it. Looks fantastic!

There are only a couple hotels with swimming pools and the Villa Santi Resort south of town is one of them. But as previously posted, the weather is turning cooler. A good alternative is to take the 'tour' to Khuang-Si Waterfall where there are pools large enough to jump into and go swimming for a refreshing dip during the heat of the day [the weather changed again and the cold nights and early morning aren't as cold as just a couple nights ago].

BTW, you cannot rent motobikes in Luang Prabang: only pushbikes and mountainbikes.

Thanks every one for all the good tips. We will be arriving in L.P. around Jan.3 so maybe warmer weather? The falls sound good! Any other tips welcome! Happy trails..........
