Laos Airlines also has a daily flight:

I've flown both Laos Airlines and Bangkok Air. Honestly their safety and comfort is on par with each other. Choose which ever has a more convenient schedule or price.

Flight is about 1hr 40 mintutes.

Yep, both Lao Airlines and Bangkok Airways fly Bangkok>Luang Prabang>Bangkok. Usually Lao Airlines is less expensive but both do offer promotion airfares from time to time so it's worth checking both.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lao or both are offering discounted airfares right now given that tourists numbers are down due to the 'troubles' in Bangkok. But if you're flying into BKK only to connect with a flight, then there really shouldn't be any disruptions despite the political situation in Thailand.

I flew the route late March and Bangkok Airways worked out cheaper which was a bit of a surprise to me, great airline BTW and is full service including the use of their lounge at the airport whatever class you fly.
If you wanted to avoid Bangkok at the moment and were in Chiang Mai Lao Airlines have a daily return flight from there too.

Travel Tips for Luang Prabang

Visa upon arrival

by Emile0867

No problem, you can apply for a tourist visa upon arrival, it is quiet fast (any way faster than at consulat before departure) and it will cost 30 USD + one photo (if you forget your photo, it will cost 1 USD more).
Very simple/
Have good trip

Some Observations

by muddybok

I make some observations when I was in Laos and I found that being a monk can be quite enjoyable although the benefit that they enjoyed not as great as mine (a professional bum).

The following are some comparisons between them (the monks) and me (muddybok):

The monks
1) early morning (6pm) wake up for gathering food from donations
2) meditation (may be)
3) performing duties
4) around 3pm, taking nap or chill out (see pic @Mt Phousi Viewpoint)
5) around 6pm, get ready for evening prayer
6) after 7pm private time (some reading scriptures, some play with hand phone) << Yes! Some monks have cell phones
7) light out after 10pm
8) go to step (1)

muddybok
1) early morning (6am-10am) still sleeping (skip breakfast)
2) after 10am, prepare for work
3) doing some minor tasks, then lunch
4) around 3pm, beer break
5) around 6pm, pack up & adjourn to drinking hole
6) after 7pm, at drinking hole, make phone calls to call for people to join for drinking
7) knock out at 2am next morning
8) go to step (1), wake up with some hang over

Sunset from Mount Phousit

by SirRichard

Mount Phousit summit is a perfect place to see the sunset in LP. From there you can have a wonderful view of all the area around it, and the Mekong and Nam Khane rivers.
Many people climb up for the sunset and there are not many places to seat, so come early if you wanna have a place seated.

Local young girls selling family wares at market

by thedouglas

When you go to visit the surrounding villages, you'll see a lot of the girls and ladies who sell at the night markets selling from their homes during the day. They work all day and night, as a family group, making and selling their handcrafts to the tourists.

Many of the girls at the markets look too young to be mothers - but sure enough, when you seen them breastfeeding, you know that they are not just babysitting siblings etc! The babies must learn to be very patient, hanging around while their mothers work all day and night.

There's not a lot of English spoken yet, as tourist is relatively fledgling in Laos - but smiles and purchases are quick way to make new friends!

Notice the colour of the water the second bub has - and we get all bent out of shape to drink the bottled water!!!

Jungle Trail

by SirRichard

In many travel agencies in LP you will be offered several days trips into the jungles to see lost tribes, hike, rafting, canoeing...
Wildlife and jungles are still virgin in Laos and you will find here incredible landscapes and a great time if you love adventure travel!
