Love this hotel!

We stayed in a balcony room, upstairs, for one week. The room was spotless, had great a/c and a lovely balcony with chairs for relaxing. The room was spacious and light. The river wasn't really visable from the balcony, but the trees with small lights (at night) made up for it. Breakfast was included across the street with made to order omelettes, fruit, breads, juices, bacon and a daily specialty (fried rice, VNT spring rolls, pho). Service is very nice all around.

Unique Quality: There is a computer for guest use in the lobby. There is a charge, but it is nominal,

Whats nicer to visit: Waterfalls or Caves

by joyful_sun

Hi all.

I will be visiting Luang Prabang for only 1 night thus very pressed for time. Aside from the morning alms and a few temples, I will have time to visit only one of the 2 sites: either the Buddha caves or the waterfalls. Where do you suggest I go? The waterfalls or the caves? What would make a better visit? Or do I just skip both and just stay in town, sit in a cafe, walk the river, chill etc By the way, I am booked at the Sala Prabang by the river, any comments on this hotel? Is it a nice place as seen in the internet? Thanks.

Yes the Sala Prabang is a nice hotel. I'd recommend spending the morning walking around LP itself and then if you're still up for going to the waterfalls you could drop in at any number of local travel agencies to book a ride to Khoung Si or Tad Se for about U$5. Khoung Si is the nicer of the two and the minibus or songthaew usually will depart around 1pm but you'll need to book in advance for a spot and you return around 5pm but it'll take at least a good half hour to get back to LP. If at all possible, spend a couple more days in Luang Prabang.

Both the caves and waterfalls are nice, so it's hard to pick one. Maybe it depends on the time of year you are going. The waterfalls dry up considerably in the dry season and swell up in the rainy season, making them more impressive in the latter. On the other hand, half the enjoyment of visiting the caves is the boat ride up the Mekong river, where you can stop at small villages on the way.

Thank you both for your help. Yes I did visit your pages Rodan and it has helped me alot. Unfortunately for us, we will be in LP for such a short time so we will definitely have to miss one site. I guess we will decide when we get there and see if the river is shallow, and get comments from fellow travelers if the waterfall has been reduced to trickles since it is the dry season. Thanks again.
