I liked the hotel but didn't love it

Was there for 3 nights in Nov 2007 and booked through Gulliver's Travel at about $80/night. The website (which desperately needs updating) shows an incredibly nice hotel but the hotel is just nice. (Not a knock, BTW.) The rates on the hotel website are much higher and they don't respond to your emails and bookings inquiries anyway. If you could however get them to give you a airfare/hotel package, you'd end up savings lots of money. The rate typically includes breakfast (Lao/Western buffet) and transport to the airport (6 km or 15 minutes away by car). Call them before you arrive so that someone will be waiting for you outside. The restaurant is supposedly quite good and was quite full for dinner while I was there. I did find the wait staff at breakfast lethargic and uninterested, though not impolite. One more thing, NO TV. God forbid you might actually have to read or engage in a conversation.

Unique Quality: They have all the trappings of a better hotel such as bathrobes, slippers, mini-fridge, tea/coffee facilities, ensuite, a/c, safe, etc. Quality of these things are more than OK though I stuck with my own bathrobe and slippers. The hotel has a very nice facade and the building was reputedly the residence of the wife of King Sisavanvong. I'd attach creedence to that claim.

Far too far, far too old...

Not to be confused by the Villa Santi Hotel which is slap bang in the best part of Luang Prabang, the sister onncern, the Villa Santi Resort, is located about 10 to 15 minutes’ drive out of town along some of the worst roads I have ever seen. There is a free shuttle bus between the 2 locations which runs to a timetable, but the less exposure to the bone-jarring roads, the better as far as I was concerned.

The hotel itself is set in some beautifully landscaped gardens, very lovingly tended and manicured. There is a large swimming pool with lots of poolside chairs and a bar that has a 2-for-1 happy hour every evening from 5 till 6 (good cocktails included).

The rooms were adequate but tired. The doors to the balcony did not shut properly so they had erected a mosquito net around the bed. It looked quite pleasant but I am sure was a result of the poor maintenance rather than chic design. The bathroom was also pretty tired in general – with the shower head having a big hole in the side which resulted in the sink and mirror being soaked when you showered.

The breakfast buffet was fine, but busy meaning we needed to eat out on the balcony where it was pretty cold in the LPB morning. Similarly the reception windows and doors were constantly wide open meaning that everyone was constantly cold – even the staff wore their jackets all the time.

No internet in the rooms – no excuse in this day and age.

The staff were cool and pretty detached – not many smiles or greetings.

Unique Quality: Other than the equisite gardens, everything else was below par.

Next Time We'll Stay Elsewhere

We've just returned from the Villa Santi Resort (not to be confused with the Villa Santi Hotel).
The resort is quite outside the old city. It advertises ten minutes away, but it's really twenty five minutes because of the condition of the road. They also advertise an hourly shuttle, which there is not. They do have several shuttles throughout the day, but they are not even close to hourly. In addition, the shuttle in the morning which goes to see the monks receiving alms is not free, as are the other times.
The swimming pool was clean and warm, but the pool bar was always closed. The "spa" is in the process of being converted to guestrooms, but massage is still available in the room.
Breakfast was large, if a bit strange. They advertise a buffet, but it is ala carte (and included with the room). The dining room was quite tattered and the table settings not clean.
I'm sure it's not the fault of the hotel, but there was no power for a good deal of our stay. They have a generator, but it is not adequate to run the air conditioning. There were no fans provided. It was DARN HOT!
During our stay, the string on our "Do Not Disturb" sign broke, and was collected by the maid for repair. Unfortunately, when we checked out, this maid was not on duty, so the front desk was going to charge us for the loss of the sign. Explanations and a bit of indignation got them to waive the charge - but I don't see how a hotel can expect a guest to be responsible for an item that's supposed to be left hanging outside the room! The half hour delay in leaving for the airport, plus the rude implications, surely spoiled whatever good feeling we had at all about our stay at the Villa Santi Resort.
Our advice is (we had four guests, two rooms) - stay somewhere in the old City, and stay away from Villa Santi Resort. We'll be doing just that on our next visit to Luang Prabang - the city itself is so wonderful, we've decided to return there next month!

Unique Quality: Too far from the main city, with infrequent transportation available.

A beautiful hotel

This is one of the nicest hotels in Laos, you can almost forget where you are when you stay here. We were there in winter so swimming wasn't much fun as the water was fairly cold but it was beautiful to sit and sunbathe by the pool. The breakfast (included) was pretty good but I always wanted to go to Joma after (mmmm banana bread).

I would recommend this hotel but it is quite expensive.

Unique Quality: Very beautiful landscaping and pool.

Beautiful landscaping

I would recommend this hotel to everyone, it is one of the more expensive hotels in the area but it was worth it.

Unique Quality: The pool is beautiful, but not heated so it is hard to stay in there for very long.

Colonial Hotel

Beautiful old building that has been sympathtically restored. Helpful staff, nice courtyard area and upstairs restaurant.
Rooms a little small but more than equiped.
Very atmospheric at night with the mosquito nets.
The hotel is well positioned to view the temples as it is towards the historic temple district on the main street.

Unique Quality: Lovely atmosphere and great view of the street from the upstairs restaurant which serves excellent Lao food and a wonderful buffet breakfast.

More about Villa Santi Hotel

We stayed at the Villa Santi...

by keiths

We stayed at the Villa Santi in Luang Prabang. It used to belong to the Lao Ryal family. Beautiful French Colonial architecture, small clean comfortable rooms with hot water. Free breakfast buffet. Excellent food! Centrally located. Free airport transfer. I highly recommend it.
Expensive for the area, but still at about $35US, a great deal. The restaurant and veranda upstairs has grat food.

Luang Prabang Hotels

I'm planning a trip to Laos this September. If anyone could give me some advice on places to stay, I would appreciate it very much.

In Luang Prabang, I'm considering the Villa Santi, L'Auberge Calao, Apsara, and Sayo. If you have stayed in any of these, I would be so happy to get your feedback. Also, I wonder if it's better to stay in the old original building or the new annex at the Villa Santi. Thank you so much for your help.
