 | Villa Santi Hotel: Next Time We'll Stay Elsewhere

We've just returned from the Villa Santi Resort (not to be confused with the Villa Santi Hotel). The resort is quite outside the old city. It advertises ten minutes away, but it's really twenty five minutes because of the condition of the road. They also advertise an hourly shuttle, which there is not. They do have several shuttles throughout the day, but they are not even close to hourly. In addition, the shuttle in the morning which goes to see the monks receiving alms is not free, as are the other times. The swimming pool was clean and warm, but the pool bar was always closed. The "spa" is in the process of being converted to guestrooms, but massage is still available in the room. Breakfast was large, if a bit strange. They advertise a buffet, but it is ala carte (and included with the room). The dining room was quite tattered and the table settings not clean. I'm sure it's not the fault of the hotel, but there was no power for a good deal of our stay. They have a generator, but it is not adequate to run the air conditioning. There were no fans provided. It was DARN HOT! During our stay, the string on our "Do Not Disturb" sign broke, and was collected by the maid for repair. Unfortunately, when we checked out, this maid was not on duty, so the front desk was going to charge us for the loss of the sign. Explanations and a bit of indignation got them to waive the charge - but I don't see how a hotel can expect a guest to be responsible for an item that's supposed to be left hanging outside the room! The half hour delay in leaving for the airport, plus the rude implications, surely spoiled whatever good feeling we had at all about our stay at the Villa Santi Resort. Our advice is (we had four guests, two rooms) - stay somewhere in the old City, and stay away from Villa Santi Resort. We'll be doing just that on our next visit to Luang Prabang - the city itself is so wonderful, we've decided to return there next month!
Too far from the main city, with infrequent transportation available. Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageDirections: Very very far away from the Old City. Not 10 minutes, except perhaps by helicopter!

 | Villa Santi Hotel: I liked the hotel but didn't love it

Was there for 3 nights in Nov 2007 and booked through Gulliver's Travel at about $80/night. The website (which desperately needs updating) shows an incredibly nice hotel but the hotel is just nice. (Not a knock, BTW.) The rates on the hotel website are much higher and they don't respond to your emails and bookings inquiries anyway. If you could however get them to give you a airfare/hotel package, you'd end up savings lots of money. The rate typically includes breakfast (Lao/Western buffet) and transport to the airport (6 km or 15 minutes away by car). Call them before you arrive so that someone will be waiting for you outside. The restaurant is supposedly quite good and was quite full for dinner while I was there. I did find the wait staff at breakfast lethargic and uninterested, though not impolite. One more thing, NO TV. God forbid you might actually have to read or engage in a conversation.
They have all the trappings of a better hotel such as bathrobes, slippers, mini-fridge, tea/coffee facilities, ensuite, a/c, safe, etc. Quality of these things are more than OK though I stuck with my own bathrobe and slippers. The hotel has a very nice facade and the building was reputedly the residence of the wife of King Sisavanvong. I'd attach creedence to that claim.
