Duang Pa Sert guesthouse.: Adequate for one night.

The vast majority of people coming to Pakbeng will stay one night before continuing their journeys on the slow boat either North to Huay Xai and Thailand or South to Luang Prabang, as I was. I had picked up a bug somewhere and just wanted to lie down so I grabbed the first place I could which was here, and it proved to be perfectly adequate for a night. A fan room, ensuite with hot water that was clean if a little threadbare.

From the little dealings I had with the staff, they seemed to be friendly with a little English spoken. The room was 50,000 kip which, talking to other travellers who had stayed elsewhere seems about right for the town. They will provide a decent packed lunch at a reasonable cost for your second days journey.

Don't worry about sleeping in and missing the boat, you will get an early call whether you asked for it or not!

Vastana Guest House: it was alright

It was good (according to price) 4 rooms guest house + groceries shop + resturant... for the ground floor where i stayed there was one toilet cum shower for 2 rooms.. I was told an other fellow traveler who had been by the slow boat to Luang Prabang in 2006 by the same slow boat, that best bet is to walk a little bit from the boat station further up in the street and there would be plenty of bargaining options... as its small town whose only source of income are tourists brought in by the two slow boats, one going up and the other one going down to Luang Prabang, and both of them arrive at almost same time every evening... so if you just got your way through the mobs of accommodation agents around the boat arrival point yoiu will get unbelievable prices... A girl at the ferry station asked me US$ 15.00 for that room, I just ignored and short while later she ran behind me for 5 dollors I asked to have a look first, I sticked to US$ 2.00 as I was told and she agreed in the end..

View from the window was blocked it was thick forest and leaves and branches of the tree just creating a thick net.. and than in the middle of night electricity went off.. it rain heavily in the evening so it wasn't so hot without fan also.. something which was really irritating: some of the guest houses turned on their electricity generators as town was very small, the noise couldn't be avoided..

Phet Sokxai: New teakwooden place overlooking the Mekong

We stayed one night in this brand new hotel called Phet Sokxai. It's a little bit uphill from the boatlanding, and it's overlooking the Mekong.
Rooms are small but clean and comfortable. They have their own bathroom.
Electricity is available until 22.30 at night. The the local generator stops and it get really hot. You can open the windows in your room, they have muskito net-screens.
Beds are quite comfortable, just what you need after a whole day on the slow boat.
Breakfast is ordinary and expensive, nothing special.

We paid 450 thai bath a room, after a little bargaining
We took 2 rooms (one for us, and the other one with a big double bed for our 3 kids.

New, clean & comfortable rooms (it was build in 2005)

Monsavan Guesthouse: No rats !!! Important !!!

Many travellers complained the enxt morning of having had rats in their room and not having any sleep at all.
We had a very good night at Monsavan GH.
It was a very clean, bamboo room with fan and mosquitonet (not holding any rats, I suppose).
The toilets are across the street and that is not funny when you've had too many beers in the evening.
The owner prepares delicious sandwiches for teh second leg of the boattrip

Bounmy GH: My favorite GH

We first went to another GH which was on the main street. All the better accomodations were already booked out before we even arrived, and some other GH along the main street are really in a bad shape. My advice would be when you arrive take the road which turns left (not the main road), there you will find Bounmy GH with nice people. We easily got a room there with mosquito net over the bed. When we arrived in Pakbeng it was like a challenge to get a room,. So make sure you will be one of the first people to leave the boet!
