This was a very modern if inexpensive place to stay and found it oddly enough by going with the taxi driver cum tout that brought us in from the airport. I normally am not a fan of such methodology but this guy seemed easy going and was willing to bring us to a couple places en route. His place was the nicest for the price (60,000 KIP or about $6 for a double).

The room was very spacious with three beds though we had it all to ourselves and the air conditioner kicked butt too. But the best thing aside from its central location was the shower. Every other place we had stayed in Laos had no shower curtain. In fact, the shower and toilet were in the same room. This bodes well if you use the local way of wiping yourself as I am sure a shower nozzle comes in handy then. But for western ways, it just makes for a wet bathroom and the need to watch where you sit things as well having to go barefoot or wear rubber sandals. This place had an actual shower curtain as you can see from the photo. Sounds silly until you do not have one for a couple weeks.

This was just a charming place. Clean, quiet and only 14 USD for a single room with A/C, hot shower, en suite, TV and breakfast. This was the nicest place I stayed during my Laos trip.

I reserved in advance through the service on travelfish and yes, I got a prompt reply in perfect English and my reservation was honored, very nice indeed.

Beautiful courtyard, outstanding service, breakfast included.

Pleasant guesthouse right across the road from the Mekong. The Mekong Riverside Minimart where you can buy everything from tiger balm to oreos is right next door. A/C, tv, hot shower, en suite, for 12 USD (August off season rate). My only regret is that there was no fan in the room. I always get the A/C rooms because usually they are nicer but then I don't use it because it makes me sick and gives me a headache. Most places have a fan as well...but not here, so be forewarned if you can't use A/C either.

Very friendly staff and view from the rooftop overlooking the Mekong. Great sunsets!

The rooms are spacious and clean.

Internet broadband in the room costs $15 per day. In the business centre it's about 2$ for 1/2 hour. In town it's much cheaper.

Breakfast is good - starts at 6.30am.

It is about 5-10 minute walk to the centre. Or you can flag down a tuk-tuk (better than getting one that waits outside).

D Tech club is in the grounds of the hotel - not in the same building so it shouldn't keep you awake. Closes at around 1am.

    Very friendly staff.

I'm not sure if I would stay here next time, as the distance from the centre is quite annoying and now there are apparently comparable hotels located in the centre (which before was apparently not the case)

When we arrived from the airport by a Taxi (an old Toyota from the 50:ies - it made 0-40 km/h in 2 minutes!) we met very friendly staff saluting us everytime we entered the gate to the hotel.
The breakfast was very nice with everything You can ask for.

We rented the presidentsuit at Lane Xiang just for fun, itīs a bit solky and could for sure be a part in a old movie, the suit had 3 rooms - 1 master bedroom and 1 bedroom with 2 beds, and a livingroom with a huge refridgerator (2 m high!) the only thing in the refridg. was 2 bottles of water and 2 cans of Lao Beer!
Satelite TV, telephone, roomservice 24 h, swimmingpool.
The doublebed had seen better days, it was impossible for 2 persons to sleep in - it was something like a hammock. I had to sleep in the other room but we slept well and it was quiet.

    My humble room
    by SirRichard
This time I had no budget for luxury, so I went to the bottom: 5 USD in a simple but clean hotel that seemed to have known better times...
The room was simple (see pic) with shower included (too included maybe!!) and a fan, enough for me.
It had a balcony with great views to That Dam stupa (see the intro pic of this page).
The hotel reminded me in a way those sovietic style 60's hotels you find in Africa, in former soviet-influenced countries, so huge and empty...
Anyway, it was centrally located, walking distance to everywhere.

The bed was quite hard, but it had air-con (who needs aircon in Vientiane?) and satelite TV, the breakfast was alright but no more.
We paid 15 $ for our doubleroom.

It has a balcony on the top where You can sit and look over the Mekong river.
It also has a washingmachine at the balcony where it is possible to wash Your clothes and dry them as well.

  • Settha Palace Hotel, Vientiane - Vientiane
    Settha Palace Hotel, Vientiane
    by Rodan44
The Settha Palace Hotel in Vientiane is both a historical landmark and the city's best luxury hotel. Built in the 1930s during the height of French colonial Indochina, closed for many years after the communist revolution, and recently reopened in 1999.

We stayed here during our two night visit to Vientiane, and we were immensely impressed by the quality of the room, the facilities, and the service. Very similar to the Grand d'Angkor in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Quite refined but still relaxed and friendly. And although it is prohibitively expensive to the average Lao, it is a great bargain compared to similar class hotels anywhere else in the world.

Our room still maintained a French colonial feel and was tastefully furnished. The bathroom was both modern and elegant. The pool was heavenly after a hot day of sightseeing. The breakfast buffet only served western food, but was still quite decent. The location is within a short walk of all the major sights.

This was the "ensuite" shower-everything of my room in Vientiane. I was impressed of how close it was to my bed, I could literally JUMP from the bed in the morning directly to the shower, LOL LOL
WC was shared, out of the room, at the left (was a hole on the ground anyway...)-

  • Guess what, after I came back from Luang Prabang and stayed back the khamvangsa GH, now he wanted to charge me US3.5, 0.5 extra from my first time stay. I was a bit tired and heading home by that time, so just agreed without much bargained. The person said, this time I give you a better room...

Well.. what he mean a better room look worse to me.. it was like a back garden, beside an unfunctionable toilet.. I need to walk for long distance for shower.. and suffered from cat mourning the whole night.. luckily I am those easily fall into sleep.. else might enter into desperation after the night with eerie sound surrounding you..
