Has anybody got an update on the bus service from Udon to Vientiane? I know there is a website, but that does not have much info such as transit time, convenience etc.

First at all, to be able to take this bus, you must have already a Lao Visa, the bus can't wait for passagers who appply for visa at the border.

There is one bus at 8:00am another arround 10:00am, and than about one every 2 hours.

Price should be 80THB one way.

It will take about 2 hours including the time waste at border checkpoint.

A driver who knows the town

by cochinjew

It is better to rent a car with a driver, usual price is about four dollars per hour. then you can decide the itinerary. I recommend VONE a very pleasant lao, punctual
he can be contacted on his mobile phone

Laos is clean. At least is much cleaner than Cambodia and Vietnam. Cambodian and Vietnamese, especially latter have the habit of throwing the rubbish any where they preferred.

In vietnam, I have difficulty to get a rubbish bin; in Laos, the situation is much better. I can find rubbish bin whenever I look for one.

Road side stalls

by myspices

Most of the authentic Lao food can be found at the road side stalls. The vendors prepare the food in the most traditional way and they are inexpensive. You might think that it's unhygienic but i assure you that they are cleaner than some food served in restaurants. The set up is usually a make shift cart/trolley - low tables and small stools are provided if you want to sit and eat your food there. Vendors at road side stalls are usually friendlier and more chirpy people.

Age to get married

by yuet29

Laos is an open country. What I mean open is not the politic policy but the thinking of the parents/ elderer on marry matter.

In Asia, parents always have some say in their children's marry matter. In Vietnam, a lady must get married before 25 and a guy must get himself a wife before 28. However, I asked the Laotian here what is the age they ought to get marry? Those lady looking at me like I am an alien..

Finally I found out that there is no specific criteria or age for a person to get marry in Laos. Even though their daughter fall in love with a poor, old and ugly guy, as long as it is what the daughter chosed, the parents will just prepared their wishes and give their full support.

I was touch with the culture. It is neither like chinese society where staying single is not a choice, nor like some society that there is a certain age to get engage.

For laotian, lady or gentleman, as long as you like, you can do whatever you want.
