Laos Visa Information
by Rodan44
When traveling to Vientiane, it is possible for foreign tourists to obtain a Laos visa on arrival at either the Friendship Bridge crossing from Thailand or at Vientiane's Wattay Airport. You will need a valid passport with at least 6 months validity, two passport size photos, and $30US or the equivalent in Thai Baht. Keep in mind that tourist visas on arrival are valid for only 15 days, so if you plan to stay longer you may want to obtain a visa at a Lao embassy, which is valid for 30 days. According to Laos' tourism website "The Department of Immigration in Vientiane will only extend tourist visas for one day. It is sometimes possible to get an extension for an additional 15 days by submitting an application through a tour agency. Foreigners who overstay in Laos risk arrest, and they will be fined $5 for each day upon departure." http://www.visit-laos.com/before/visas.htm
Nam Phou Square
by ValbyDK
Nam Phou Square is located in the centre of Vientiane. In the middle of the square there is a small fountain – and Nam Phou means ‘fountain’ in Lao.
I passed the fountain a couple of times, but never saw it in action so don’t know if it works?
But the area around the square is quite nice with shops, accommodation and some great restaurants. Great place to visit after a long day in Vientiane…
Abandoned Cinema

Abandoned Cinema, almost all cinemas in Vientiane are left empty like this, I saw more than just one. I think nowadays nobody bother to pay money to cinema, DVD at home with karaoke and self strip naked dancing...
Checkers
by Hewer
You often see men playing checkers outdoors in Laos. They use bottlecaps for the pieces and play on makeshift boards just about anywhere. They seem to take it pretty seriously too. No chance for a game for me.
The two men playing here were taking a break from doing the gardening at Sisaket Temple. I don't blame them - it was too hot at that time of the day. The guy on the right seemed to be winning.

A backpack is the most practical bag to carry as you can easily get from one place to another without anyone helping you with suitcases. Sandals are nice to keep cool but comfortable shoes with socks are better for walking as well as keeping mosquitos at bay. Insect repellent is a must and women should carry tampons, especially away from the main cities. A wide angle lens helps for taking photos of buildings, a polarizer helps reduce glare. A zoom is great for taking people photos without them knowing it.
