SABAIDEE GUEST HOUSE: CLEAN AND COMFORTABLE
We arrived from Vang Vieng on a mini-bus and approache dby a guy who turned out to be the owner of the Sabaidee GH. It was within 50 metres of the mini-bus station and we were pleasantly surprised at this clean, friendly and comfortable place. We paid 40k with hot shower, another 20k if you wanted a television. The owner and his wife were exceptionally friendly and offered lots of information regarding the area. We also rented a motorbike from him at a reasonable price, which we returned slightly damaged, so we had to purchase a new chain guard. The owner accompanied me to buy the spare part and made sure i got it at a fair price.

Vansana hotel.: Nice tourist hotel with a good view.
The Vansana hotel is one of the best places to stay in ponsavanh.
It's fairly large with spacious rooms and a very good view of the area as it's located on a hill about 10 minutes walk from the center of town.
The place has a nice little restaurant and nice and friendly people working at the reception desk.
Nice rooms and a good view of the area.

Maly Hotel: Maly Hotel is a good guesthouse
In fact the Maly Hotel might to be considerer as a guesthouse. We have chosen a 20 dollars room upstairs in the second floor. The room is very small, with an attached bathroom very small but enough. Appliances at the bathroom are disposed in odd positions (very high sink, off centre mirror); not comfortable. There is hot water from solar panels. But there are so many pipes and taps that it is not clear how to use the hot water.
The bed is a double one, very large and comfortable. There is no condition air, only a fun. It’s hot into the room during hot season. There is a lot of light, because of the orientation of the room. The window has a varnish glass whitch is not enough to protect from the direct sun at the morning. The very light curtain is not enough also to avoid the direct rays of the sun at the first hours of the day. This is very disgusting.
It is compulsory to take one’s shoes off into the hotel: reception, restaurant and rooms.
People at reception desk are very attentive and useful, the same as every person at the restaurant is. Food at the restaurant is good and service is very good. There are enough dishes for every taste. But I am sure at the moment is not difficult to find the same quality of food in another new or old places in the city.
The atmosphere at the restaurant is exceptional because of the collection of war remains. But don’t wait a familiar or close atmosphere, it is exactly as impersonal like a big hotel. The owner at the moment looks to be very busy to be worried about the clients.
You must be careful at the time of paying expenses. You can use cash or credit card. But never try to pay in another currency different to US dollar or local currency. Guides books and forums alert about this. In Laos is not good idea to use euros to pay because they use any approximate rate, always in their own benefit and the amount can be increasing very much. There is a Lao Development Bank 10 minutes walking from the hotel; you can change your currency or TC previously to avoid abuse.
The building is a nice and new one with some comfortable places to rest.
Prices for rooms go from 8 to 50 USD. Breakfast is not included, but complimentary transfer to airport for clients it is.
Room is very clean as the rest of the hotel facilities and restaurant and there is no any kind of animals. The windows has an attached brand new mosquitoes net but it doesn’t fit well and I had by myself to put some pieces of adhesive tape to avoid mosquitoes to come into. Just under the windows, there is a large pond and some vegetation; a good place for insects.
Walls inside the room are well painted but are decorated with some huge posters with images from tropical beaches which are very strange and unfit. Also there is a very nice typical tapestry over the bed. The floor at the room is covered by a grey carpeting but is uncomfortable because is unglued. Room has a good TV set, but room is not large enough to have it.
There is a new large building just opposite Maly Hotel, now is the only alternative nearby to have dinner or a drink.
The Maly building is surrounded by some big bombs, a fuel deposit from a jet and even a tree decorated with some bombies like a Christmas tree.
They are specialist in tours in the area but now there are some many other places at the city that offer most of the same. We have made a trip with Maly to visit the plain of jars with a contracted guide and driver. It’s was well done. However you must check in another travel agencies, guesthouses an even at the tourist information office where you can get another trips around the area and then compare. Check if entrances fees are included in the tour. Maly’s ones are not. You must pay in every site in plain of Jars.
You must consider that Maly hotel has a lot of good things but is far (20 minutes walking) from the city centre where the very few attractions are: restaurants, cafes, guesthouses, markets, photo center, farmacies, and tour agencies.
Probably you must check another places in the main street before taking a decision.

Vansana: Best in Phonsavan
This is a great - brand new hotel on a hillside overlooking Phonsavan just to the North. It has a fine 360 degree view of everything.
It's not packpacker stuff, but thats a good thing...Hommie
Like I stated...the views, and quiet, make this the place. It's a jumping off place for the helicopter insertions and extractions for MIA-KIA archeological workings.

The Maly: The Maly
The Maly is one of the more unique hotels in all the world. How many other hotels use UXO for decoration and used bomb cases as a fireplace? The rooms are fairly good and it is nice to have a hot shower even if it is for limited times. The Maly also sports its own travel agency which can arrange tours of the Plain of Jars, the real Ho Chi Minh Trail, local villages, and more.
Prices are $8 to $40 USD.
The hotel has a fairly decent restaurant with good prices.
Power in Phonsavan is only on from 5 - 9 pm. It's interesting as the TV goes on immediately at 5! With these times the best time to take a hot shower is between 6 and 9 pm.

Hotel Maly: A dining room with a difference!
Mmm... Interesting place.
As with a lot of guesthouses, restaurants and hotels in the area the hotel is 'decorated' with ammunition left over from the Secret War.
The hotel sfaff are friendly, the rooms clean and the shower worked well.
The restaurant serves excellent food and specialises in duck.
The hotel has it's own tour agency, which we found to be excellant. After touring the sites of Phonsavan we were shown a fascinating video back at the hotel. The video was about the American troops involved in the war in Laos, very interesting.

Auberge de la Plaine des Jarres: Views across the valleys
On a pine-fringed ridge to the east of Phonsavan, the Auberge gazes down on the plains and ricefields.
Beautiful wood cabins with log fires for those cold nights, and good showers. Cabins have a verandah at the front, and a separate sitting area.
$30 per cabin per night.
Lovely fabrics on the walls.
Check out the collection of war ordinance on the bar (the UXO disposal groups, e.g. MAG) stay here and verify that the bombs and grenades are properly disarmed!
Excellent restaurant, but ned to order ahead. They did great, great baguette sandwiches as a picnic lunch, but sadly cannot deliver to us in Beijing!
There is a great 1:100,000 map on the manager's office wall!
Staff and management have a really GREAT attitide: friendly, smiles, helpful. Some of the nicest people we met in a month of travelling.
