Pousada de Mong Ha (Boutique Hotel, Training Hotel, for Institute For Tourism Studies (IFT))
MOP 80 = HKD 83 Quiet, very excellent service, fine restaurants adjoining it with EuroAsian setting. Tennis court and in walking distance to all major attractions, especially the Fort of Mong Ha and walking trail.
Away from the madding crowd, quiet and comfortable, first class service for reasonable rate, 5star hotel room facilities, very very comfortable, I would stay here again for my next trip Very private place and great service from all the staff
I stayed at the Pousada de Mong-Ha and found it relatively cheap and a good stay. It cost me MOP$640 (US$80) per night, inclusive of breakfast, for a double room, no tax as it's actually part of a government tourism training institute.
Service was excellent, rooms clean and spacious, breakfast not lavish but adequate.
Old folks may want to avoid this place as it's located on top of a steep hill unless you take a cab there every time you return from an outing.

You could always check tips given on here (by putting Macau into the destination search box) or look on listings on Tripadvisor.

Do you have any suggestions on the place to stay in Macau? What would be the cheapest? best value for money? We were thinking of staying at the Venetian but on second thought we won't be spending much time in the hotel but will be going around so best to save money and stay at a cheap lodging.

You may want to give a look at "Pousada de Mong-Ha" (http://www.ift.edu.mo/pousada/eng/intro.htm), a cozy, no-frills, boutique hotel run by the local Institute for Tourism Studies. I stayed here in 2006 and it provided me great value for price.

You can try Hotel Sintra or Hotel Royal.
I stayed in Hotel Sintra before and the room is very spacious compared to hotel in HK.

cheapest would definitely be augusters. they have only 3 rooms which can accomodate up to 4 (2 double-deckers). another affordable hotel is metropole. very nicely located...walking distance to major attractions. please see my hotel tips for contact details.
