GRAND MARGHERITA (FORMERLY HOLIDAY INN): BEST HOTEL IN KUCHING SARAWAK
We had a very enjoyable stay here. When we stayed it was called the Holiday Inn, renovations were being carried out, and now it is called the "Grand Margherita."
The ONLY HOTEL ON THE RIVERFRONT so........
when you are booking, make sure that you........
Request a room with a river view,
I did, and that is what they gave us.
There is lots happening on the river, so its quite interesting to sit by the window and watch the goings on of the River traffic! Every evening, dragon boat crews were practising for an upcoming festival.
Our room was large and nice. All rooms feature double or king size beds, controlled air conditioning, private bathrooms, hairdryer, minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, in-room data port, IDD telephone with voice message system and TV with satellite news and entertainment channels.
Rooms for non smokers and the disabled are also available, so remember to ask when you book!
Breakfast was a buffet, very busy, hard to get a table sometimes. A big choice of food, and very nice. Service here was good.
There is a travel agency in the Hotel which was cheap and very good. Of the 3 tours we booked with them, twice, we were the only people, and once, we only had one other couple with us, so it was like our own private tour.
Located across the road from the Hotel is the main shopping centre, and along the riverfront is a lovely walk.
This Hotel is in an excellent position, the staff were lovely, the food good, (we had meals here as well) and it was close to everything.
Unique Quality: Great views of the river

Miri Marriot hotel & Spa: BEST HOTEL IN MIRI
This is a 5* Hotel and it lived up to its rating!
Set in a tranquil garden setting overlooking the ocean or the garden, we loved sitting on the Balcony enjoying the view. What a nice spot to enjoy a caffiene break!
Our room was large, with a large king size bed, luxurious fluffy pillows, cotton sheets and soft comforters.
An in-room safe, free coffee/tea making and complimentary water was included.
Breakfast was a buffet with an incredible choice of food. We had dinner here as well, both were excellent.
The service here was excellent in every possible way. Definitely recommend this 5* Hotel.
Unique Quality: Fantastic pool, fantastic choices of food.

SUKAU LODGE: JUNGLE ACCOMMODATION NEAR SANDAKAN
Sukau Lodge accommodation was included in our tour of the Kinabatangan River.
The accommodation here was basic, this was to be expected, as you are situated in the Jungle a long way from anything.
From what I understand, the only way to reach here was by boat.
Our room was clean, which is the most important thing for us. The people in the room above made a lot of noise which you could easily hear as the walls were very thin. We were unlucky there, as the people in the room next to us were very quiet, and we didn't hear boo out of them!
Included in our tour was Breakfast and Dinner.
Breakfast was basic, but o.k. Our meal at night left me with little to eat. as the asian food was all very hot and spicy. They did not have one dish that wasn't, which I thought they should have, as a lot of people can't eat the other!
I didn't have anything else with me to eat, so perhaps a tip, take something to nibble on.
Be aware if you are booking acc. in this area, there are other Lodges with similar names, they may be better than this one.

SEPILOK NATURE RESORT: Next to the Orangutan's
We usually have one accommodation splurge on holidays, and this was it.
Located next door to the Orangutan Rehabilitation centre, it is a series of chalets dotted around the tropical gardens and lakeside. The Orangutan's can actually come into the area if they so wish!
The big lodge, this is where reception is and the dining area, is lakeside, a very tranquil and romantic setting.
On arrival, you are given a seat and a nice cold refreshing juice, before being taken to your chalet.
The chalets are lovely, ours was in a secluded spot.
The meals were not outstanding. Breakfast, not much choice.
Accommodation was good.
Check in time: 14:00 Check out time: 12:00
I organized a package deal, told them what I wanted to see and they came up with a good deal. Saved a lot of hassles on my part. The tours they arranged were very good, nice informative guides, no complaints.
Everything ran smoothly.
It was a very enjoyable stay here, and I would return again.
Unique Quality: Lovely tropical jungle setting

BEVERLY HOTEL: Excellent Hotel
Nothing was too much trouble for this hotel.
I booked over the internet.
Arrival and booking in all went well. We caught the lift to our floor, a high one as requested, an added bonus was that we were given one that had a balcony!
The views were good and so was the room.
We were too hot with just the doona and too cold without, so asked for a sheet or thin blanket, not a problem, soon there was a knock on the door with the request being filled.
We left our luggage with them while we flew to Sandakan for a few days, this was quite alright and there was no charge.
Breakfast was a buffet, with plenty of choice.
The morning we arranged for a taxi early to the airport, they left us two packed breakfasts to take with us. They were huge, and very nice, too big for us to eat everything, which was a shame.
A car rental office is in the hotel office, which we used to book our rental car, it was handy and there were no complaints. We hired a great little car!
There is also a free shuttle to and from the city centre, will drop you off in different locations.
Staff were nice, and helpful.
We had an enjoyable stay here, and would stay here again quite happily!
Unique Quality: Facilities were........
Left Luggage Facilities, Free Valet Service, Currency Exchange, Baby Sitting, Credit Card Facilities, Car Rental & Tour Services, Laundry Services, swimming pool, gym (workout attire provided) Sauna, 24-Hour Reception, Telephone and Message Service, Daily Housekeeping with Turn Down Service, Limousine Service,
In-Room Safe Deposit Box, Complimentary Newspaper, Complimentary Welcome Drink,
Hair Dryer, Individually Controlled Air Conditioning, Ceiling Fan,
Mini Bar with Free Coffee and Tea Making Facilities 24-Hours Room Service
Gift Shop
and probably some more!
I gave this Hotel 5*

Ras a ria Shangri-la Hotel: A bit of luxury
This hotel is a very good hotel and we have stayed there 3 times. The staff are really careing and go out there way to make your visit a memorable one
Unique Quality: All facilities are superb and the free use of water sport equipment was a real bonus but the main reason for choosing the resort is that it has its own orangu tan sanctury thay you can visit. There are also jungle walks both day and night . A truely wonderful hotel

Where to stay if you are going to Sipidan
If you are a diver you can stay on Mabul in some very basic accommodation - afterall you're here for the diving not a luxury experience, right? If you are a rich diver or thought you would splash out on accommodation on Mabul or Kapalai be warned that both places are over-priced - you are basically being fleeced for your hard-earned Ringgits because of the proximity to Sipidan not because you are staying at a 5 star luxury resort. We couldn't find any mid-range accommodation so the only other option for us was to stay on the mainland at Semporna and do daily boat trips out to Mabul, Sipidan or Kapalai. We stayed at the Dragon Inn in Semporna in a huge hut which was good value for money (called VIP hut). The disadvantage of this option is that you have to spend more time each day getting out to the reef but you also save a lot of money compared to the expensive places. Diver's accommodation on Mabul was a bit too basic for us (and we only snorkel not dive). Semporna has a bit of a strange atmosphere though, it might be a bit threatening for women on their own at night. On reflection I don't think there is an ideal place to stay (maybe it was Sipidan itself before they closed the accommodation in order to protect the reef) but don't let that stop you; wherever you decide to stay it will all be worth it when you see the reef!

Dragon Inn, Semporna: Water village at a bargain price
We stayed in an VIP hut and the standard of accomodation was good. The hut was massive! We had always wanted to stay in a water village but the prices in places like the Maldives had put us off. It was nice to stay in a hut on stilts. However, Semporna is not a beautiful paradise it is a bit of a dirty old town! Interesting market -lots of great, cheap fruit. Bit of an strange edgy atmosphere in this place though. Handy and cheap place to stay if you are going to Sipidan.
Unique Quality: Stay in a hut on stilts!

Sepilok Nature Resort: Sepilok Nature Resort
We stayed at the other place (Sepilok Jungle Resort) and had lunch here at the Sepilok Nature Resort (we also had a look round the place). The accomodation at the Nature Resort is of a higher standard that at the Jungle Resort, nice looking huts, but it sseemed to lack any character. It is a lttle soulless by comparison and seems to cater for large tours groups. we had the buffet lunch (this seemed to be the only thing on the menu) and it was ok but nothing special. Nice gardens though, but again seemed to have stolen all their ideas from the Jungle Resort.
