very helpful chinese run guesthouse.
mr lou is a very freindly and helpful receptionist and 64 year old jimmy doing the nightshift before working at the morning market has to have a special mention for waking me up and turning on the tv at 4 o'clock in the morning so i could watch football.

There are a couple of halfway houses at Labuan Rata, which is like the halfway point on your way up to the peak. All are pretty decent but you have to prepare to rough it out. One point to note, you have to reserve your accommodation at Labuan Rata at the base camp, as they have a quota of climbers allowed at any one point in time. As for the base camp, rates are reasonable with a dorm bunk costing around US$5-8 or less.

We don't usually stay in 5 star hotels but we got a very good deal through Malaysian airlines. It was £30 a night with flights from KL to Penang free.

What can I say, it is a 5 star hotel and one the best that I have stayed in. The service was excellent. The room was quite large. As we were on the 17th floor we had an excellent view. There was a pool, gym and sauna. Also a couple of restaurants, and it has a walkway to a shopping mall with a supermarket. The breakfast was just amazing. It was a buffet catering for asian and european tastes. The picture shows the Sheraton in the background.

If you're going to Kuala Lumpur you should stay in Chinatown. This is a lively and very nice place and here you can find accomodation that is cheap or you can stay at a hotel like I did. After two weeks in poor accomodation in cities and in the jungel of Taman Negara it was really nice to stay a night at a good hotel. It wasn't that expensive, 100 RM/night for 2. The hotel I stayed on was Swiss Inn and it was a wery good spot in Chinatown. At night the streets filled with tables and good shopping. Go there!

We found cheap accomodation as low as 'under 5 US$' a night if you don't look for too much comfort. Small 'cabanas' right on the beach on some islands.

Generally speaking, hotels rooms are much cheaper than in Europe or North America.
