Summerset @ Rompin - Hotels: A hotel great with potential

by Wild_Orchid

On our recent return trip to Summmerset @ Rompin (in July 2006) we found the hotel grounds to be slightly run-down. The hotel room itself was comfortable, the service was reasonable, staff friendly, (they even put on a welcome dance when our group arrived and sent us off with a song & dance routine!) but the hotel itself is in need of maintenance and refurbishment.

This trip, I had a room on the ground floor, which stepped right out into the garden leading to the pool. In fact, I had a good view of the pool from my verandah.

The previous time I was at this hotel (in 2004), my family and I had stayed on a higher floor. The rooms on the higher floors (it is a low rise hotel) have balconies, that look out into a mass of green trees, with a glimpse of the pool. During that trip, it was the school holiday period and the entire resort was crowded with families and holiday makers from Singapore and around Malaysia. I recall that the noise from the pool sometimes carried into the room.

Upside: Very family friendly hotel.

Downside: the noise from the pool.

Be careful of the deep swimming pool: There is a small but very deep pool next to the swimming pool for scuba lessons. The swimming pool itself is very deep (more than 1.6 m or 5 feet). Be sure to keep an eye out on your kids when they are at the swimming pool. There are life guards around, but they can't be everywhere at once.

The outdoor bubbling jacuzzi located within the pool is a popular spot to relax.

Side-Trip:If you have more time, you can make it in time for a day-trip to Pulau Tioman. The Teluk Gemuk jetty to Pulau Tioman is 1 hour's drive away, and followed by a 1 hour boat ride.

Prime City Hotel, Kluang: Hidden Away In The Wilderness

An impressive hotel in a neat town called Kluang !

Hoover Hotel, Kulai: Small Town Hotel

by gnh

Just a TV and bathroom, with airconditioning. But the lorries passing by were heard loudly, and sleeping was n't peaceful at all.

Strange noises from the plumbing, leaky valves ?

You get what you pay for ........... lousy value anyway.

Golden Beach Resort: Golden Beach Resort

by Qairil

I stayed here quite a couple of times. The room are slightly bigger than a standard hotel room. Though started to look old due to wear and tear.

The service is ok but can be a tad late sometimes. The breakfast buffet provided with the room rates was limited.

As it is quite far to the nearest town, food in hotel is considered limited and not to forget expensive. Take their shuttle bus service for RM10 per person and have your lunch and dinner in town.

Don't visit this hotel in late December to early January like I did. What a big mistake! Due to the monsoon, several of the hotel chalets' roof were ripped off and the swimming pool have to be closed due to a fallen tree swimming in it. Other than that, the hotel is great value to stay in.

Summerset@Rompin Villas: Be Active or as lazy as you like

by Wild_Orchid

There are two types of accommodation at Summerset. This tip covers the Villas. I have another tip on the hotel, as I've stayed at both types of accommodation.

Mayfair and Chelsea Villas are quite spacious & especially suitable for families. They are 2 bedroom villas, and come with a mini-kitchen including a fridge, dining table and living room. The whole villa can sleep 4 adults and 3 kids comfortably as the sofa in the living area can be converted into a bed. There is also ASTRO (cable TV) and a safe for your valuables. There are 2 bathrooms in each villa. There are 2 entrances to each full villa, leading to each bedroom (because they are also rented out on a half-villa basis).

For a smaller family, you can take half a villa but it may not be complete. The 1/2 villa will include a bathroom, but some units have only a kitchen, while some come with only a living room, but no kitchen. (sorry, it is rather complicated to explain, but when you check- in, you should be specific when you ask the Reception what type of room you will be getting.) Do bring some extra towels for the kids because each 1/2 villa is given only two towels.

The bathrooms at the villas were spacious, with two sinks & two showers, one indoors and & one indoors. Some of the bathrooms come with a bathtub, and one outdoor shower.

The outdoor showers will be a hit with the kids.
Room rate can be either for Room Only, OR All-Inclusive- which includes all meals and sporting activities and equipment such as catamaran, kayaks, bicycles, All Terrain Vehicles and even scuba diving lessons. Please see their website for more details on this.

Unique cabaret show performed by the staff: On some nights, when there are larger groups around, the staff will sing and dance and generally do their utmost to entertain you. The kids will love it and you can join in too!

Downside: Quality of food is not that great at the hotel. Best to drive out to the nearby town of Kuala Rompin (15 km away) or stalls about 3km away for food. Service is uneven, as the staff are friendly, but a bit slow and not that efficient. So don't expect too much...:-)

Footnote: The original tip was written in 2004 and updated in July 2006.

Puteri Pan Pacific Johor Bahru: Nice hotel with great service

by suzaila

It is a five star hotel (i think). The room is nice and the staff are really friendly and helpful.

The food is okay i guess.

You can see Singapore from your window (if you get the one that faces the straits, that is).

Remember to ask for one of the re-furbished rooms.

Sofitel: Like a 5 star hotel but so afordable

by suzaila

This is a great hotel. It is located near the airport so it's great for those travelly to Johor by air.

The place is beatutiful. Looks like a a 5 star hotel but really afforable. The last time I stayed there, it cost about RM70 a night for a twin room.

The staff are friendly too. Had a lovely stay. Highly recommended.

I have added the hotel website ... but the room rate displyed is more than what i payed. Maybe it is better to call and make a resevation directly with the hotel instead of through the website.

It has the normal hotel facilities like pool and gym. There is also a spa. Cost about RM190 for a facial i think.

Oh yeah, it is a golf and country resort, so there is a golf course.
