Still at the Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort here in TIOMAN. This is our lovely room at the resort. Very nice. ;-))

by jasc_chia

To satisfy your palate, mouthwatering cuisine is offered at Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort's restaurants, from Cantonese fare at Fortune Court to local and Western delicacies at Sri Nelayan. My favourite will be Sri Nelayan (coz that's the only one that I tried) International dinner buffet serves at US$12 per person. Or you can cycle to the village for some local food at a cheaper price. (rental at $4 per hour for the bicycle)

Needs TLC

by TripAdvisor Member susie144

We stayed at the hotel for two weeks from 19/3/07.The island is beautiful, but very remote.Unless you take a private plane transfer, the journey there is adventurous to say the least. The hotel is in need of some TLC, although upgrading of accomodation was going on.Our room which was a superior chalet really needed some work doing on it.The restaurants were good especially the Chinese, go to the fish retaurant just outside the hotel gates.Very rustic, but fantastic service and food at silly prices. If you want a child free zone do not go to this hotel, although the beach is very quiet.

A pleasant and memorable stay...

by TripAdvisor Member nur_yahya

We had read the reviews here before heading for our Berjaya, so we were extremely careful not to leave valuables in the room. Was even abit paranoid! Anyway, we had a very pleasant stay overall... and it was a memorable girlfriend getaway. We stayed in the standard rooms. The exterior of the chalets were very tasteful, traditional kampung houses in well kept gardens. The rooms were abit dated though, the furniture, curtains and aircon should probably be replaced soon. Nonetheless, it was comfortable, and their complimentary toilettries were good quality stuff. Room service was also very prompt (we requested for help with the television and later asked for an iron.. they came within 5mins both times). We saw some new rooms being built, so hopefully they are looking at updating the resort.

There were 3 things that we liked best about our stay
(1) Pretty and well kept surroundings made for pleasant walks within the resort. we were 2 girls so safety was quite important
(2) Gorgeous view of the sunset from the poolside deck (see pic). Probably the best pool on this island (though I admit I havent seen Japamala's)..
(3) A choice of 2 activity desks, one run by Berjaya, one by the locals (Tourism Assoc of Tioman). We engaged the Tourism Assoc services, and was very impressed with the service. Their snorkelling trips had more stops for the same price, and their service was also alot more flexible than the standard ones that Berjaya offers. Their Coral Island trip ($60) was 2 hours longer; it has an additional private beach stop on Coral Island and a lunch stop at Salang Village. The beach was gorgeous (see pic) and a good starter stop for first time snorkelers or children. On our second day, Pian (the guy manning the activity desk) helped arrange for a guided snorkel trip to Renggis Island, and our helpful guide Faraidh snorkeled with us, showing the parts with nice corals, pointing out special fishes, and even a baby shark! We were grateful for that special trip, as they brought us around the little island so we could see the other parts. The trip offered by the Berjaya desk only drops guests off at 1 part of the island.

The resort serves a good breakfast buffet spread, so we were happy with that. However, the prices for at the restaurant, for lunch and dinner, were too pricey for us. Thankfully, there is a nice little village restaurant Delima Tomyam Seafood, right outside Berjaya's main gate. The food there is excellent... and a fraction of the prices in the resort. A must try is their Ikan Siakap Tiga Rasa.

If you go to Berjaya, try going during the weekdays as their rates are much better, and I advise not to book the package, cos if you do your maths, its not cheaper at all.

Overall a nice stay if you are looking for creature comforts. I have already made advance reservations to return with my parents :)

Is everyone talking about the same place?

by TripAdvisor Member DtotheC7

Thought that i'd share my experiences staying at the Berjaya on Tioman Island. My wife and I spent five days there (April 16th-20th) and had a really enjoyable and relaxing time. We booked a deluxe chalet directly thru the hotel website (288MYR/night) and the hotel gave us a room right in front of the beach by the main swimming pool. In the beginning, we had a few problems with the room, (toilet mechanism breaking/front door not locking), but the front desk sent a repairman out to take care of it. After that, our stay was incident free. I'd like to address some issues that were raised in previous reviews:

- we used the safe in the room. Checked it everyday but nothing went missing.
- the room was a little dated but some chalets were being renovated and modernized. Try the ones in the middle of the resort near the beach.
- staff were friendly and welcoming. I used their dive shop for 3 dives and my wife went to the spa twice. Richard at the dive shop was particularly helpful.
- there are numerous restaurants and eating options. We ate at the Matahari Restaurant three of the four nights. The food was really good. A few cats were wandering around but they're not jumping on the tables or anything.
- the resort is really nice although it could be better if the staff paid more attention to detail. The beach was beautiful and gets even better past the dive shop. Almost no one goes down there!

I know that some people felt the prices are high, which they are for the island. But coming from Japan, we felt we got great value for our money. Everything (room, food, diving, spa, even a trip to the resort doctor) cost us about $750USD. Of course there are cheaper options on the island but one trip off the resort to look at them convinced me I had made the right choice. Bamboo Hill Chalets at ABC looked very nice and there were a few other places that looked ok.

We stayed almost entirely on the resort, enjoyed the beach and the swimming pools. The diving and snorkelling was great. I don't golf, but one of the other divers had played a few rounds and commented that the course was pretty special. I'd recommend this resort for people looking for quality accomodation in a great setting. If you're on a really tight budget or staying a long time, you might want to explore other options.

Hope this was helpful...

Does not entertain locals-Foreigner only

by TripAdvisor Member CharlieTee

Do not go, you will regret it! Me and my wife went there for honeymoon, it was an okay only resort and pricey food but the worst is the service by the front liners. They only serve foreigners and not locals.
The frontliner practically served a foreginer who had just arrived at the counter rather us when we were standing waiting for them at the counter. We stand at counter 3, the foreigner stood at counter 4. Even the foreigner was shy-ed.
I submitted a feedback form, but seems no one cared. Makes you feel like you shouldn't be there. I am dissapointed

Horrible Stay

by TripAdvisor Member oneashwin

Very horrible experience:
1. Food choices are very limited - most of the restaurants are always closed, not enough vegetarian options
2. Beach is very mediocre
3. Lagoon is stagnant and a murky breeding ground for mosquitoes
4. Water force in rooms is very very low
5. Staff attitude is very poor and unhelpful.
6. Price is too high.
Pls avoid if you can, there must be better value for money.

TIOMAN

by Krystynn

"A PARADISE FOUND!"

The waters of Tioman are as clear as crystal. And a great activity that I can recommend you is to go snorkelling OR scuba diving!!!
Better still if you can do BOTH. :-))

FUN!!!

"LIVING LIKE ROBINSON CRUSOE???"

Living in one of these huts is quite an experience! And I truly enjoyed every minute of my time here.

C'est la vie!

"AH.... THE BEACH!!!"

Spending my time doing absolutely NOTHING... except to lie on the white sandy beaches under the baking sun (oops!)... reading my magazines... and listening to some great music!!
Ah.... What a life....

And I was sooooo tempted to fax my resignation letter back to the office.... because I just couldn't get enough of this idyllic life! :-))

"WELCOME TO THE BERJAYA TIOMAN BEACH RESORT!"

Spoil yourself. Come and stay at the absolutely lovely Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort! ;-))

"ANOTHER GLIMPSE OF THE RESORT"

Enjoy the view!

"MEMORIZE THIS MAP!"

Kidding... But I'm sure you get my point.

This is to give you a rough idea where Tioman is located....

does anyone know is there beer on the island i had heard that the perhentian islands were all muslum and am wondering is the tioman island the same
cheers

RE: tioman island

by xuessium

HI! This is Malaysia, mate, Islam is religion numero uno here. I am sure the bigger resorts do carry beer (at a higher price of course) since they cater to large numbers of non-Muslim tourists. The biggest resort on the island is the Berjaya Tioman (http://www.berjayaresorts.com/tioman-beach/info.html), a sprawling complex. There are many other villages on the island as well, each with a number of resorts and stays. The main ones would be in the village of Paya (Paya Beach Resort & Tioman Paya Resort) and Salang (home to many diving shops and facilities) outside of Berjaya. I hope this 2 links may give you some ideas: http://www.impressions.com.my/ and http://www.pinganchorage.com.my/tioman_island.htm. Cheers!

Although I've never been fortunate enough to stay there (just had a quick look around), my vote would definitely go to the Datai on Langkawi - preferably in one of their villas. Every single review I've ever seen just lavishes praise on this hotel. You might have to up your budget a bit for a 4-5 night stay, but I'm sure it would be worth it if you're looking for something really special.

Re: Re: Nice romantic beach holiday

Pulau Langkawi
Another vote for Datai and Tanjung Rhu Langkawi.

Pulau Redang
Laguna Redang and Berjaya Resort Redang

Tioman

If I can afford to pay S$650 for a night I will leave Datai behind and head directly to Pangkor Laut in Pulau Pangkor. Very private beach, private island + the most important ROMANTIC......

Malaysia in September - Need to book things in advance?

by carlosjmramos

Hello everybody,

I'm visiting Malaysia during 3 weeks, starting at 7th September.

Flights and accomodation to Kuala Lumpur are already booked.

I'm also thinking to spend 10 days exploring Borneo and a couple of days at Pulau Tioman.

Dou you think it's necessary to book things in advance to these places? Or I can manage to contact places and arrange flights only one or two days before reach the place?

Thanks in advance,
Carlos Ramos

Re: Malaysia in September - Need to book things in advance?

by limkahwan

There are two way to reach Pulau Tioman. Berjaya Air (Bluewaterexpress). You need to book in advance because space is limited, but the ferry run from Johore and Pahang. Since you are in K.L. it is advisable to take the Rompin, Pahang route. You can visit http://malaysiabudgethotel.com/destinations/tioman-island.html or http://www.malaysiasite.nl/transporttiomaneng.htm for more information. IMPORTANT NOT TO TRAVEL AFTER OCTOBER, it a moonsoon season.

Re: Malaysia in September - Need to book things in advance?

by azmilsyahmi

I agree with Limkahwan. Don't travel to Tioman between october till Feb. I was there in January 2 years back. Took the Berjaya Air. Flight was ok . But heard from some people taking the ferry it took them almost 3 hours and the water was choppy. Very seasick weather. Also there is nothing to do there as you can't go snorkelling. It was really boring.
