Sea Gypsy Village Resort & Dive Base: Diamond in the Rough

Sea Gypsy Resort is not what one would describe as luxurious in the typical sense. It does not house the most up to date technology in its modest chalets, nor does it have top of the range Italian leather settee's in each chalet's rooms.
The luxury that Sea Gypsy's boasts is that of friendly & helpful staff, gorgeous views of the beach - be it sunrise or sunset, rustic, yet comfortable rooms, delicious food & a complete child friendly paradise.

As some one who has lived in South East Asia for the last 18 years, Sea Gypsy's was quite a gem to find. Having had the opportunity to travel extensively I have stayed in some pretty dreary and down right horrific places. Sea Gypsy's may not have the typical amenities like little shampoo & conditioner bottles or bath soap (since there aren't any baths!) but it does offer a standard of service on par with that of any major 5 star hotel, with facilities to boot.

The chalets are all made with wood and have traditional atap (palm woven) roofs. These are basic rooms, let's be clear about that. You have the comfort of a double or single bed (which ever you book) with a mozzie net. The room has hanging space & bedside tables. There is electricity but no hot water. The resort is an eco-friendly resort, so relatively cold but refreshing showers all round, however all the water on the island from its taps is drinkable. Don't come expecting air-cons - the entire resort & its chalets are decked out with ceiling fans to keep guests cool. All the chalets (especially the hillside chalets & I believe, villa number: V0) are a couple of paces from the beach. So going to sleep to the sound of the ocean is nonnegotiable! All the chalets have lovely little balconies that you can sit out on and enjoy the view of the beach.

In terms of the prevalence of mosquitos & sand flies... there are, but it is nothing that a little Off! spray & SG sand fly remedy can't sort out. You just have to make sure you're sprayed with Off! each morning and each evening as this is when mozzies are most likely to be about. Sand flies are not a problem if you get the spray or you make the remedy yourself (it's available on the SG website or you can purchase a bottle when you arrive at the resort). I didn't have a massive problem with the sand flies and sometimes I even forgot to put the spray on, but that being said there was one girl that got absolutely ravaged by them in the dry sand, but once she put the spray on she was absolutely fine. They are small flies that hide out in the sand and cause itchy bites much like mozzie bites - that being said many people react differently - some have small bites, others have large bites. At the end of the day the entire resort backs onto a massive jungle - bugs are going to be about!

This resort is perfect for those interested in diving - if you're a seasoned frogman or interested in taking up the sport, Sea Gypsy's dive base has friendly & highly qualified staff to help you gain your certificate or help you further your study in diving as it offers a wide range of courses. There is of course snorkelling as well, sailing and boogey boarding. All equipment is available from the dive base and is ready for rental for a small fee.

There are daily excursions at Sea Gypsy's e.g. Kampung walk (walk to the local village), sunset fishing, snorkelling trips to other islands, a waterfall hike etc. This is an excellent way to explore the rest of the island and neighbouring islands. You can also take a trek through the jungle to the other side of the island and visit a neighbouring resort. It doesn't have a sandy beach like Sea Gypsy's but it does have a nice bar to have a drink in before heading back through the jungle.

For those traveling with children, SG offers Kids Club which is available everyday for a couple of hours in the morning and in the afternoon. Kids can do a wide range of activities with the Kids Club coordinator for a small fee. This also time for mum & dad to get some peace and quiet!

The restaurant has a varied breakfast, lunch & dinner buffet each day (depending if you are on package or not) with a perfect balance of western & local Malaysian cuisine. There is also afternoon tea served each afternoon between 4.30 & 5.30pm which has lovely scones & brownies accompanied by different types of tea and coffee.
The bar is just up from the beach and when it is quite busy has amazing atmosphere. With a long list of cocktails & an extensive wine list all moderately priced, the bar is the place to be! A plus side? It doesn't close until the customers have had enough!

The beach is gorgeous, with golden sand and a crystal blue sea. Clean, clean, clean!! This is not the east coast of Singapore - there will be no danger of swimming into a massive pile of rubbish! It is also a very sandy beach which means kids can play in the water without any danger of nasty rocks scrapping their knees or feet.

Getting to Sea Gypsy's is very easy - having booked online with ease, we were picked up and taken over the border to Tanjung Leman which is the jetty you get to before getting on one of the 100hp jet boats SG has to ferry across customers. It takes about 15 - 20 mins to get to the resort - with the boat going as close as possible to the beach... there is NO JETTY on the island so make sure you have waterproof shoes or take your flip flops off and don't mind getting a bit wet!!!

All in all - as you can see, I am completely in love with the place and having already booked my next trip to the island, I urge others to do so also..with quality staff ready to look after your needs, a place where kids can roam free without worry to parents, great activities to enjoy, comfortable chalets a stone's throw away from the beach, amazing food... this is a place that shouldn't be missed.

Sibu Island Cabanas: The best resort on pulau sibu

Isn't is great when you go somewhere that you never want to leave. Usually there's always something not right with your choice of holiday. Cabanas on Pulau Sibu was fab. The rooms had clean white sheets, modern bathrooms and even beach towels. The aircon was quiet we could still hear the sound of the waves.

Imported Lamb shanks from Australia! Yum. Exactly what you want after a day out diving.

I would recomend this resort to people living in Singapore wanting a short weekend and people coming from Europe for a week or two. If its an island holiday you want look no further.

Friendly fun staff. Amazing fresh modern food. Lots of activities to do if you get bored lying on a beach. Tennis, table tennis even had a game of volleyball with the staff.

Small dive shop = small dive groups only 4 in total on my dives here. Very nice

Would recomend to couples!

Sea Gypsy Resort: revisited

Have again come back to Sea Gypsy only to find that not a thing has changed and the place is as awesome as I remembered it, Here are some new photos - You have to walk through the jungle to get to see the sunset, but whilst I was there the staff told me that the sunrises are amazing (not that I was ever up that early to see them)

The amazing thing about this place is the lack of commercialism there are other resorts on the island, but there are no shops, there was no one trying to sell me something whilst I was topping up the tan and that even begins at the Jetty Tanjung Leman where I went to the resort boat and wasn't accosted by 50 million people trying to get me to their resort.

Sea Gypsy Resort and Dive base: Sibu island's best resort

i would deffinatly pick to stay at sea gypsy resort, the resort is built on one of the best beaches the island has to offer, the chalets clean and comfortable, and the food is great.
from being picked up in Singapore on Friday by the resorts own transport to being dropped back on Sunday evening, all the staff were extremely helpful and professional, with Courteous and efficient service . The resort has an uncompromised quality of service which no other resort on this island seems to offer.
Breakfast lunch and dinner were incorporated in our package and the food did not disappoint, with local and western influences, meals were followed by fruit and afternoon tea was served fresh every day, we were never left hungry.
We took full advantage of the dive base, which can run anything from island hopping trips to scuba courses, and they also rent out sail boats, kayaks, and boogie boards or organize games of volleyball it really was a lot of fun.
The rooms are simple, which makes sense when you are on a beach and they are clean!!! You get mosquito coils and nets for night time, and there are fans or you can leave you windows open for a cool fresh breeze.
i would definalty recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a laid back relaxed beach holiday, with efficient service.

the views out over the water are amazing especially if you are awake for the sunrise.
the bar is also a must, with many cheerful customers to meet, alot are expats from singapore, and a local bar man who makes wonderful cocktails well into the night.
Also the divebase is run very well, i recommend you try the scubs diving, as the coral is beaming with colour and ther are so many fish to see.

Sibu Island Resort: Horrible Service

Where do I start ... so many things wrong with this place. I think I'll just list it out in no particular order:

1. Arrival
Ferry from Tanjong Leman was at 11am. We arrived the island at about 11:20, just to be told that our room won't be ready till 2pm. After waking up at 6am for a 4 hour drive to Tg. Leman, this is not the news I want to hear. They tell us that the official check in time is 2pm. So why have an 11am ferry if you're going to make your guest wait in your lobby or the horrible karaoke lounge till 2pm?

2. Linen
Attached picture is of a bath towel provided in the bedroom. I don't think I have to say more. Blood? Coffee? I don't want to know.

3. Dinner Buffet Food
Dinner voucher states that the dinner buffet starts at 7:30pm and ends at 10pm at the coffee house. But it actually starts at 7pm (as we found out the 2nd night), and by 7:30 on the 1st night, most food is gone, as they don't replenish it unless you ask. I had to ask for them to refill the salad dressing, bread, dessert, fish, ... hmm ... they just pretty much just don't replenish anything unless you ask them to.

4. Dinner Buffet Seating
There's just not enough seats to handle all their guests. So, they start seating people in a musty and smelly banquet room, about 100m from where the food is.

5. Drinking water
The faucet water is not potable (its salty). Therefore, the only source of water on the island is bottled water priced at RM4.50 for 1.5L. On the mainland, it goes for RM1.00. Major RIP-OFF.

6. Snorkling Trip
Wonderful ... that's if you like dead corals. The corals could not be any more dead. Major letdown.

Continued below:

7. Nature
For some reason, u can be at the beach, and there's a nice breeze. Move about 20m inland, and nothing. Absolutely still. Strage, but true. There's 4 beaches on the island, but access to 2 is blocked off, leaving you with only 2.

8. Recreation Prices
Quite pricey. This resort just tries to squeeze as much cash out of you as possible. Example: They sell fish feed at RM2.00. Its basically just 3 pieces of sandwich bread. Com'n, we're already at your private island resort, and you wanna charge us RM2.00 for 3 pcs of bread to feed the fish? Why nickle and dime everything?

There were some nice things about the island, such as:

1. Nice construction of chalets and landscaping.
2. Deers roaming the island.
3. Friendly Filipino cover band sings u a welcome and farewell song, as well as seranades u during dinner.
4. Staff (except the check-in counter staff) was friendly and helpful.
5. Overall, the island and resort is quite alright, but the operations need to be improved.

Sibu Island Resort: Sibu's best resort

This happens to be the only hotel and or residence on this small island in the South China Sea. Since we were the only ones at the resort, service was great! The staff stay on the island for weeks at a time before going back to the mainland.

When you arrive you are greated by the hotel employees and given a tropical drink. The service was great.

The resort is all bungalows. Very private with beautiful views. The room is basic, wood floors and great bathroom facilities. They do have hot water using a heater that the water runs through.

Sea Gypsy Village and Dive Center: Rustic yet comfortable

Sea Gypsy is a great place to enjoy a quiet, restful weekend, or enjoy a weekend of watersports. The resort consists of about twelve thatched roof huts all looking out to the beach and the sea beyond. There is no telephone in the hut, nor television. The only air conditioning is the ceiling fan and gentle breezes that come off the water through your open windows. Green mosquito nets are hung above every bed. Meals are served in the main building which is the dining area and bar. The food is delicious and fresh. It is of a local influence and served family style The bar is a gathering place, it's comfy and offers board games and reading material, but be warned, the drinks are a little high priced. There's a watersports kiosk offering sea kyaks, diving and snorkeling trips, and other activities. A kids club is offered, to keep your little ones busy while you enjoy the beach in peace or take an excursion. They play games, do arts and crafts and have scavenger hunts. Our daughter loved her time here.

The huts are rustic. The showers are cold water only, but it didn't really matter. Furnishings are rustic wood frames with comfortable mattresses. There are cottages for two, three and a family sized double cottage.

The best part of Sea Gypsy is the first time you arrive. We arrived in the evening. It was dark when we reached the pier on the mainland. A small speed boat took us racing across the water under a full moon. We could just make out the shape of the island in the distance. The boat sped past the island and to the far side, where little clusters of light hug the shore. As we pulled closer to the Sea Gypsy the driver slowed the boat and ran ashore. We rolled up our pants, waded ashore, crossed the beach and headed to the bar! It was quite memorable!

rimba Resort: Sibu - Rimab resort

My husband and I have just experienced a wonderful 5 night stay at Rimaba resort.

Firstly, I will advise that it may not be the place for all people but for those who that want excellent food, relaxation and hospitality then Rimba should be on your must get to list.

Things to do. Snorkeling, swimming, reading, (take a book or two) plus jungle trekking, a trek to the other side approx 20 minutes for a fine sandy beach and you may only want to do this at low tide.
I will emphasize that this is a smallish yet personable island resort. For those that are interested it has a very well stocked bar and Beth the bar attendant can make a dare fine cocktail or five!
Overall all I can say my husband relaxed, ate, swam, and just had a very good time.

A young South African couple who manage the resort who are really open and respect your opion.
The rooms are extremely well kept and the resort is just a lot of fun.

Sibu Island Resort: Poor maintenance of resort...

I didn't enjoy my stay at the island at all. It was my worst holiday ever and I'll never return to the place.

The resort have lots of problem with its toilet. And not only I have the problems, some of the guests there have similar problems. The water from the shower in my toilet was very little and at times the water will stop flowing totally and you have to use the water from the sink to wash yourself up. Apparently, the water from the sink and toilet bowl are running quite well. Even when u call for maintenance to fix the problem, it will just be OK for a while and go back to square one later. Another couple was complaining that they need to flush for over 20 times just to clear the toilet bowl. Another couple said that they can even flushed! Some mentioned that their air con is not working! Seems that everyone got some problem with their rooms.

No one that I knew there enjoyed their stay at the resort.

However, there are lots of activities on this island and you have to pay for all their activities.

Activities includes night fishing, diving, snorkerling, massage, spa, canoing, banana boat, etc.

Pool water was so dirty. It was murky and full of sands.

No great view from your room unless you take the suite which will face the beach itself.

The resort is not the back to basic kind. There are TV, fridge and water heater in the room.

Oh, by the way, there were about 3 to 4 power cut offs in a day.. the worst one was a cut off at 4am!! What the heck!! How are we going to sleep in a stuffy room??

Sibu Island Resort: Deserted beautiful Islands

You get a wonderful welcome, and the staff are so sweet.
It is pure relaxation, you can sail to other islands, play tennis, dive or you can just enjoy boredom.
Diving here is great. The water is warm ;-)

There are no other buildings or houses on the island, just the resort.
3-4 days are sufficient here.

Just be aware of mice and bed-bugs in your chalet. We had both in our bedroom every night.

This is the area, where the TV reality series "Robinson" is being recorded.
A series shown in many countries in Europe.
(Equivalent to "Survivor" in USA.)

SIBU ISLAND RESORT: Sibu The Island

They have a very warm welcome on your arrival- it's like you're in Hawaii. It's an island on its own and you have to fill with activities to avoid boredom. On the whole, i will recommend you to go there as its a very romantic short getaway destination.

Service - Good
Facilities - Good
Amenities - Good

Stayed at the Honeymoon Suite and it has fantastic view - the sea. It's just a minute away from the sea. You can just swim or laze by the beach to read books which i will reccon.
