When FIFA football came to town
by SLLiew
In 1997, the 9th FIFA World Youth Championship was held in Malaysia.
Darulaman Stadium of Alor Setar was one of the venues.
It was a great treat for all the locals to see some world class football albeit at youth age group. Tickets were affordable and it was an easy short drive from Penang.
Suddenly Alor Setar was crowded with outsiders.
Permaipura Golf & Country Club - Bedong
by chiabh
Opened for play in October 1997, the club is set against the panorama of Gunung Jerai and azure-blue skies... The course layout maneuvers thru an open canvas of placid lakes, gentle streams, strategic sand traps and different species of trees...
The course play to 5666m from the blue tees..The front Nine features more mature trees and open fairways, while greens are visible from the tee... The back Nine presents more intrigue with it narrow fairways... The clubhouse reflects Kedahan splendour and motifs with a golfer's terrance that looks out to the 9th and 18th green... There is also an air-conditioned restaurant, changing room, a pro-shop and a flood-lit driving range...

KEDAH STATE MUSUEM
by markbank
As a state museum, it houses a large collection of Kedah's historical, culture, and royal heritages. The collection includes early Chinese porcelain, artefacts from the archaeological excavations in Lembah Bujang (Bujang Valley) and a fabulous pokok bunga emas or 'gold tree' produced as a tribute to the Thais.
The museum is also a research centre on Kedah's civilisation. Before the present premise was built in 1936, the museum - officially opened by the then Kedah Mentri Besar Tan Sri Tunku Ismail Tunku Yahya (Tunku indera Setia), on February 3, 1957 - was located in the Balai Besar (Grand Hall).
Like the Balai Besar, the present state museum building radiates a stylish integration of local and Thai architectural aspects.
BATU HAMPAR WATERFALL
by markbank
There are several places around Gunung Jerai with the name Batu Hampar. This Recreation Park can be reached easily from Yan. Just outside Yan there is a junction where you take right to Batu Hampar. The falls are not spectacular but the stream is nice and quiet.
A trail leads to a few small, but pleasant waterfalls. We visited the place during the dry season, during the monsoon the water flow will be bigger.
