Langkawi - Basic Facts
by SLLiew
Langkawi - Main town is Kuah. It is part of State of Kedah and observes Friday as an off day for government offices.
There is an international airport.
As an island, there are ferry services from Kuala Perlis (Perlis), Kuala Kedah (Kedah), George Town (Penang) and Satun (Thailand).
It has become a major tourist destination for the unspoilt natural enviroment of hills, jungles, beaches, caves, waterfalls and islands. Also granted tax free for selective items.
Good Internet Service
by phil_uk_net
I mentioned a poor Internet Service in my Warning and Danger tips (SBR).
But I found a good one! This is a nicely run internet place, unlike SBR. The machines are in decent condition and the guy running the place seems to understand networks and how to configure them.
You are also welcome to plug in your own lap top if you have one.
It may be a little tricky to find. Along Cenang Beach Road is a Fujifilm place and opposite there is a small road going away from the beach. The internet place is located just up this road.
Fishing Without Renting A Boat
by Azri_Azmi
My personal schedule to visit Langkawi is minimum by twice per year. And at any one time, i will spend a least a week there because few of my family members live there. I won't miss the fishing activity of course.
There are few areas in Langkawi to fish without renting a boat whereby you may fish just along the shore or beaches. In Kuah town itself, there is a river by the name of Sungai Kuah. At night you may fish here during the high tide for fish like barramuddi.
Another spot will be at the Pantai Kok. You may fish at the spot nearby the entrance of the marina and lighthouse or nearby the rocky structure for variety of coral fishes especially medium size grouper. Ensure you pick the right timing for fishing here so you won't get disappointed.
Another way is to walk along the wave barrier (you can see it if you reach langkawi by flight, area is nearby to the airport). You may walk along it (the lenght is more than a kilometre) and fish. Good quality fish such as mangrove jack and snappers can be caught here.
As if you intend to have an experience fishing with local fisherman, you may contact me so i can arrange it with my uncle who is a local fisherman there. Good experience indeed because you may follow him for 3 days atsea, see the traditional ways of fishing & squid catch, snorkeling in private places and of course do you own fishing. For beach / shore fishing, long medium rods for long distance throwing is recommended. Bait in form of 'seaworm' or local call it 'umpun-umpun' can be bought in 2 places (1 in a tackle shop at Kuah and 1 in a tackle shop at Padang Matsirat )
