Tropic Romantic getaway
We spent 3 nights at the Sheraton Langkawi resort early August 2007.
We arrived by fight from Penang early in the day, and due to it being the high season in Malaysia, we had to wait about an hour for our room.
We were kindly offered cold towels (scented beautifully) and fresh juice while we were checked in in the lobby.
Location:
A little far from the main area/beaches (and by this I mean the sea aquarium down south of the island). It took us about 20 minutes to reach by car - but a really scenic/exotic drive.
Hotel:
The hotel itself is on its own private compound with security at the entrance. The hotel is divided into 3 parts. The lobby with bar, then a 4 or 5 story building with hotel rooms (standard rooms).
The second part is the clusters of chalets located any where from 5 minutes walk from lobby building to 15 minutes from lobby. There are plenty of golf carts zooming around the island all day (so its easy to catch a ride to anywhere you like).
Service:
Very friendly, polite and helpful staff. Willing to do anything to help.
Rooms:
A little "used", I guess due to the heavy guest turnover the hotel has. We selected a room with a jacuzzi and a backdoor that opened out to a little deck that was about 10 seconds from the beach.
The room decor was nice, we had fresh flowers waiting for us and chocolates.
Room was spacious and luxurious.
At first the jacuzzi didnt work well but then it worked fine.
Breakfast:
Breakfast buffet was huge! Everything from fresh fruits to rotti (bread) was available.
Restaurants:
I will review restaurants because due to the nature of Langkawi island, you will have to know beforehand where you plan on having your meals - dinner at least- because everything is spaced out over the island a lot of business close at nightfall.
The restaurants were ok (we ate near the beach caffe and at the indian restaurant.)
Definitely would suggest this but would not come back because Langakwi has other nice hotels to offer. (like the Datai).
Unique Quality: chalet style

High Price
I stayed here for a few days for a work meeting. The experience at this hotel was mixed. The set up of the resort and he design of it all is quite nice. The tiny stretch of beach they had was very muddy with water coming down from the gardens. At the time I was there they were undertaking constructions and the noise was deafening with work being carried until late at night and starting very early in the morning. Despite asking to move room nothing was done about it as supposedly they were fully booked which I found out was not true. It took complaints from me to a high level until they actually did something about it the day I was leaving. I did end up with a voucher for two free nights for two people...
Also bear in mind that the resort is not near any restaurants, shops etc
Unique Quality: Great balconies for every room to relax, one part with table and chairs and the other with a long mattress and a great detail, a ceiling fan, perfect to not only cool you down but also push those mosquitoes away :o)
As the resort is spread over a large area, they have a pick up drop off service, make sure you book well in advance when you want to leave your room.
They have a wide range of restaurants and many more were being built when I last stayed there.

Room sorprised me / Hotel dissapointed me
I decided for Sheraton Langkawi because I usually stay out of the hotels and when arrive I like a very good room, and Sheraton had it, beautiful room, very spacious, with terrace and a huge bathroom with tub, the bed was fantastic as well as the pillows, surrounding by nature, was really nice, was a garden view room and the rate was US$154 p/night.
I also liked the breakfast, huge variety, delicious and very fresh, the location was good, very close from some attractions and the restaurants area, and finally, the gym, 24 hours, with ocean view and downstairs had a very good jacuzzi.
What I didn't like was it seemed didn't take care of some gardens, the pool was old, without any design, small and absolutely not a pool for a 5 star hotel, and the beach besides is small, isn't enough clean (again for a 5 star hotel) and the ocean is dark.
About the minibus, it runs very constant, isn't noisy besides, we didn't need it because the rooms are not so far from the lobby, nor the main restaurant, nor the pool, nor the gym.
For a better pool, good beach and clear ocean, similar style of the resort, good restaurants and much cheaper, better going to the Berjaya Beach Resort (didn't like the distances into the resort, there you have to wait for the minibus, this resort is bigger; also didn't like the spa, very unprofessional)

Comfy enough for the Monitor lizards, too!
If you are looking for a trip out for winding down, and if Langkawi is your place, then I would highly recommend the Sheraton. It seems like its nestled in a little place of its own, away from the madding crowd (as is almost every other hotel, actually)
We got a very good deal from our travel agent, with a free stopover in Malaysia, with hotel, and thankfully, the Sheraton was one of the hotels on the list. The rooms are lovely, large and spacious, large bed, lots of room to dance in, even. There's not one thing in the room that should rather, or rather not have been there.
The people were warm, and welcomed us with the best mixed fruit juice I have had in aaaages!
The restaurants (esp. the one on stilts overlooking the bay) served EXCELLENT food, and the breakfast spead was amazing! (We have to be the wierdest freaks out there to be eating Curry breakfasts! But I can't begin to tell you how good it was. A HUGE breakfast followed by some ping-pong by the pool or heading out to drive on the lovely roads. It's easy to rent cars there, and the driving is very nice too. Curvy, winding roads in the thickets of rubber and lush tropical trees....
This is the place you want to visit, when you don't want to do much in the way of touristy sight-seeing or visiting places that are must-go's. Wind down at the Sheraton, and if you wish to do a spot of -tax-free, if I remember correctly- shopping, head for the Langkawi mall on the other side of the island. Nice and far away :-)
Unique Quality: The Restaurant on high stilts over looking the bay, the rooms, service, and the welcome drink juice!!
OH! And about that monitor lizard: He (or she) was actually hanging out just outside our room looking for some place in the shade to....wind down, yes. But by the time we could whip out a camera, and get him (or her, yes) in focus, IT was out of sight! NO WHERE to be seen! Just disappeared. Oh and a friendly flying lemur (ugly as they can be) kept us sweet company on a tree by the swimming pool. All in all, lovely.
While you are in Langkawi, be sure to check out a couple of restaurants on the main road going to the Underwater World (or something like that). One is a seafood place where you can choose the seafood you want from a display OUTside the restaurant and more like on the road. They make a mean lobster. The other is just opposite the seafood restaurant. It has this quiant exterior, and they make some really good couscous with different delectable curries. Both can be a little pricey, the first because you pay for the food by weight! But it is mind-bogglingly tasty. (This part should be on the malaysia page, I know, but too lazy just now).

Resort R&R
The Sheraton Langkawi Beach resort is a beautiful place to stay. The staff were friendly and always willing to go the extra mile for their clients.
It's a little far from the "town", but a taxi is so cheap it's not a problem.
We ate in the hotel a few times and some places were quite good (we found room service to be quite good), but also went into town etc to eat (which was often better and more traditional).
Unique Quality: The pool was a great place to relax, swim or grab a drink or bite to eat. Their private beach is just below the horizon pool and it was great to be able to go between the two.
There were animals and birds everywhere, it was beautiful. The spa at the hotel was also excellent and very relaxing - great massage and coconut body scrub!!

Rest & Relax Hideout
During my 3 days stay at Sheraton Perdana, I really didn't feel going back home. If you are planning to have holiday with a combination of Sun, Sea, Beach and Shopping, then this is resort you should stay. Located 3 km from the main town of Kuah, it is a peaceful retreat tucked away admist 104 acres of jungle clad hills. Taxi from the hotel to Kuah town only cost RM6, and taxi from the airport will cost RM20.
The Resort has 200 luxuriously rooms and suites with garden, sea view and sea front view. Rooms located on the 3rd floor near the Spa, is just smells amazing as aromatherapy oil from the Spa just covers the entire 3rd floor rooms.
My stay at the Sheraton Perdana has never a dull moment.
Sheraton Perdana is now known as The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa
Unique Quality: A fully equipped Gymnasium with Jacuzzi & Sauna, 3 swimming pools, tennis & squash court, sea sport centre, indoor games, a spa and a children nursery.
There are also daily activities organise by the resort; such as Village Tour On Bicycle, Kite Flying, Night Jungle Walk, Porcupine Cave Adventure, Beach Volley Ball, Traditional Games and etc.
