Almost, but not quite top-end; good all-inclusive

We forgot our main camera, so our horrible quality phone photos do not do the hotel or its views justice.

To get this point out of the way at the outset, the last time we stayed in Langkawi it was at The Datai, to which I gave 5 out of 5 and full marks in all categories. We decided to save money this time around, and so we tried a decently priced package at the Tanjung Rhu. This was about half the price of what we had paid at The Datai so of course we knew we had to lower our expectations. As both The Datai and Tanjung Rhu are 5-star beach resorts in Langkawi, however, direct comparisons cannot be avoided. Tanjung Rhu has good points which I’ll come to later, however, I’m going to start with where they fall down in keeping to a level of 5-star service. They have the right idea of what Asian 5-star service is (about a North American 7-star, if it existed), but they are not consistent in delivering it.

Big Complaint #1 is that most people who answer the phone at the resort, whether from an outside line or internally, seem to be brain-dead. Once in a while it’s because they don’t speak English, but for the most part this goes far beyond language barriers. They had sent a car to pick us up at Kuah Jetty, but we had problems locating the driver. We had to call the hotel three times to sort this out, and each time we had to explain the situation all over again and each time had to give our mobile phone number again. (Once we connected, it was excellent service, with the driver greeting us with cool towels and providing a touristic dialogue of the sights seen on the drive back.) Anytime we tried to do anything over the phone, it was a major hassle, and it mostly ended up wrong.

Big Complaint #2 is the slow service of all food or drinks service. I’m not exaggerating when I say we had to wait anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes every time, whether it be for drinks by the pool or in between all meal courses at any of the restaurants. It was especially bad at the Rhu restaurant.

Minor complaints:
• They didn’t make up our room one day. We had to go through a difficult internal call to get this sorted.
• Two of our four days there, there were no more towels available by the Sunset Pool. We had to ask for them, which also took about 30 minutes.
• We had to fight with the sliding closet and patio doors in our room. They would stick and were not very well mounted.
• The common stairways to the rooms are decidedly grungy.
• The food was generally good, but always a slight disappointment compared to the flowery menu descriptions. We never had a meal where afterwards we could rave about it. The exception is the breakfast buffet, which was excellent.
• There were only two sailboats available, so we only managed one sail. There was a third that needed repairing, but I heard from the guys there that it had been broken for months. Why don’t they fix it?

Aside from these specific issues, there is still an over-all difference to this “5-star” resort and, for example, The Datai which should in this context be considered “6-star” (though for how much longer I don’t know, as they have recently changed management). For example, while the rooms in the Tanjung Rhu are large and excellent, the finishing work was very sloppy. A child would have made a neater job of painting, something you noticed throughout the resort; no such thing as proper edge-work. There was not one piece of artwork in the room. I saw a cook at the Sands breakfast buffet drop a cooking utensil on the ground (it’s basically an outside building with no walls), pick it up, and use it again. At the pool we would get our towels and set up our beach loungers; at The Datai a man does this for you. There were many more examples of these little things, but they all add up to a big difference.

Now for the good points. Our Bayu Senja room was huge and well appointed. The bed was a true king size (not two small ones shoved together) and comfortable, and before we had arrived they had already laid out another mattress on the floor for our daughter. We had a view not quite directly overlooking the beach as requested, but looking slightly to the right. It was still a truly spectacular view of beach, remote islands, hills, the Sunset Pool, and woods. This view was one of the best we have ever experienced from a hotel room. Furthermore, they had panels by the large bathtub that you could open such that from the tub, you could look out over the balcony at this same view. The bathroom was large with the toilet separated by a door and with plenty of large thick towels provided. We could each use several each a day, if we wanted. My main peeve at hotels, noise, was non-existent here. Our room was quiet; there was no noise from the stairway, other rooms, or outside.

The grounds are beautiful and well-kept. They have done well with the architecture (if with a little over-use of concrete) and gardening to make it all seem the tropical paradise. The outside tables at the Saffron are practically on the beach (ask for smoking tables for these; it’s outside anyway), a beautiful spot for supper at sunset. The Sunset Pool was also beautiful and well-designed. It’s large, has naturally shaded areas, has little islands with trees in it, and from water level you can see the beach, the ocean, the hills, and the islands in the distance. We spent a lot of time enjoying ourselves in this pool. While some deck chair locations are better than others, we didn’t experience the lack of chairs like we have at other Asian resorts. The Lagoon salt-water pool was interesting, but we couldn’t check out the Sands adults-only pool.

The morning buffet deserves special mention. There is plenty of fresh hot food to choose from: western, Japanese, Malaysian, Chinese, and probably many others. A cook makes fresh eggs or omelettes on demand and they do, in fact, have HP sauce on hand, always a good sign.

One special activity we chose was the 3.5 hour mangrove nature tour by boat. This was not included in the TRR package, but well worth the price. I have covered this as a separate "Things To Do" tip.

Over-all, we enjoyed our stay at Tanjung Rhu and we would definitely consider coming again. If price were no issue, we might instead try the new Four Seasons resort next door. The hotel enjoys a spectacular location but management needs to step up and ensure a better consistency of the good service that does exist there.

Unique Quality: We had selected the TRR Experience Package, which is basically all-inclusive for 3 nights and 4 days. They really do mean all-inclusive. We could eat as much food as we wanted from the restaurants, by the pools, in our room, or from the mini-bar. All was included except alcohol. A 90 minute massage for two at the spa was included, as were all non-motorized water sport activities, and also our jetty pick-up and drop-off.

Romantic Spa Resort

Beautiful clean white sandy beaches, great spa, quiet surroundings, great getaway from everything (it's far away from anything).

Perfect for travellers who want to do nothing all day besides sitting next to the pool or beach with a book from the library and a cooling cocktail from the bar... nice end to our 2 weeks holiday in Langkawi.

Only one place to stay in Langkawi

Got to be one of the best hotels I have stayed in! You get checked in in your room.. The rooms I stayed in was brilliant.. Really big.. The bathrooms also.. We stayed in the Bayu Senja room with the sea view.. Really really nice..

The service from the hotel was excellent.. Second to none..

You have got to take the All Inclusive package.. All the restaurants on the resort are amazing.. We particularly enjoyed the Saffron..

Also when the tide is low you can walk across to the islands close by.. Just make sure there's lots of ppl around.. You have to walk a certain path..

There isnt much in the form of watersports like jet skiing etc.. They have a very nice spa tho..

You HAVE TO go to this resort!

Quite simply, staggering! I have yet to experiance anywhere as beautiful or where the service was so outstanding. An example would be that the check in was done in our room, no swiping of Vias card's or standing in line filling out passport numbers. Or, calling room service to tell them that two branch's of a palm tree were interfering with my view and they were cut four hours later ! Or the fact that every night they left a little box of hand made (in their kitchens) chocolates on the ladies side of the bed, of the two flat screens, or that you could lie in the bath on look out on the ocean or..............................

Unique Quality: The staff, the three resturaunts, the view, the mangrove swamps, the waterfalls etc.

For the first time ever I went on an 'all in' basis i.e. the use of all facilities with the exception of the Spa and external trips/activities were included as was all the food you could eat including room servive 24/7, though not including wine. Wine is VERY expensive in Malaysia so if you like a tipple, buy it in town.

Staggering! This place is absolutely heaven on earth. The staff, the food , the view, the restaurants in fact, the lot!

I have just come back from a week there and it is one of the very few places I will tell all my friends about, you simply have to be there to believe it.

Unique Quality: It is everything you could possibly wish for.

Best beach in Langkawi

I did not stay here but spent the day at the beach here. Amazing place, the beach is gorgeous, white sand and quiet sea. Day trips to Cave of Legends leave from here. There are some clothes and souvenir shops where the taxis arrive, as well as one or two restaurants.

However I headed to the beach and had lunch at the resort. The bar by the pool is excellent, the food was very good and good value for money if compared to the dinner at their restaurant which is not only a snobbish place but too expensive for the amount of food served. see pics.

There was a pianist playing mid morning and the whole beach could hear the melodic melodies, brilliant considering that there was no one at the beach.

Unique Quality: The reading room is tastefully decorated and the 1st floor is where you can sample a drink and listen to the pianist. Myra was the pianist when I was there. She played very well, so well I came back for dinner to listen to her playing with her band in the evening.

Paradise on pulau Langkawi

Tanjung Rhu is the place to book when you want to feel pampered and rested. The resort is ideal for stressed business people, couples with small children and honeymooners of all ages. We stayed in a Bayu Suria room which is the standard room. Room tarriff includes transfers to and from the airport in a comfortable air conditioned mini bus. During the trip you will hear about everything the resort can offer you to make your stay very special and lots of information about the Island's history.
The resort comprises about 6 to 8 four storey blocks which are built around 3 fabulous swimming pools, jungle planting and waterways filled with fish.
Check in occurs in the room where guests are treated to refreshing cool towels , delicious welcoming drinks and fresh tropical fruit. The Bayu Suria is actually a suite, which includes the bedroom, two lounging areas, massive bathroom with a retractable wall of shutters, writing and dressing area, a balcony looking out to the ocean and a rear balcony looking out to the waterways and gardens.
Daily tropical fruit, flowers and hand made chocolates and papers are all complimentary. Each day a daily activities sheet outlines some complimentary options you can engage in. Guests can also access the two internet studios as part of the complimentary services. Each room is also equipped with CD/ DVD player and each lounge has a TV, one being a large flatscreen. Each room also comes complete with Siegefriedo coffee machine. Heaven !
This resort offers a mix of Thai/ Malay hospitality and all staff greet guests with the hand on heart traditional greeting. The mechanics of running a top resort are not obvious to the guests here and you will come away feeling quite rested.

Unique Quality: The resort has three pools including the new horizon pool, a sandy bottom lagoon style pool and a more traditional, pool with fountains and swim up bar. You can learn about local craft at the Artisans hut and eat local hawker food where some of the staff like to go just at the edge of the property. The beach is private but the resort owners allow local Malay families to fish and gather shell fish at the sand bank. At low tide you can walk to the offshore islands and the view to Thailand is always glorious. The sports centre offers the usual water sports and the resort biologist runs great ecotours into the mangroves. All three restaurants are for the exclusive use of guests and every night the sounds from the string quartet and baby grand piano playing in the open air lounge will waft around the resort.
The international breakfast buffet is presented in the open air Sands restaurant and that is a dining experience in itself. There is the opportunity for alfresco, Malay, meditteranean and fine dining (but you can also wander down to the hawker food area on the border of the resort and try some deep fried bananas for 2 rm). As you laze on the beach in the shade of Casuarinas, staff will provide you with towels, cool refreshments and chilled fruit on skewers. All part of the divine service offered by Tanjung Rhu.

Tanjung Rhu Resort

Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi
On the island of Langkawi (lang-kah-wee), the rhythm of life remains much as it has in days gone by. A coastline dotted with fishing boats, rustic villages, and a horizon that twinkles with the brilliance of a thousand stars at dusk.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in a cape in the northernmost tip of the island, Tanjung Rhu (tan-joong-roo) - a scenic and untouched enclave nestled in the shade of luxuriant casuarina trees.

Here lies the Tanjung Rhu Resort - a deluxe resort fringing the long, magnificent bay that leads to the clear, cool waters of the Andaman Sea.

The easy-life charm of Tanjung Rhu echoes through the resort, tingeing the luxuries of a deluxe property, with a casual, unhurried ambience.

Welcome drinks, fruit basket and cold towels are our way to wish you 'Selamat Datang' (Welcome). Guests have a choice of rooms at the 136-room Tanjung Rhu Resort:

* Damai - 50 sqm
* Cahaya - 60sqm
* Bayu Suria - 80sqm
* Bayu Senja - 80sqm
* Anjung - 100 sqm

Each room is spacious, with timber floors and large windows, to take advantage of the tropical breezes and sea view. Employing the best of the Asian-Eastern influence, our decor is complemented with upholstery and drapes in soft Thai silk and pure Indian cotton fabrics.

All rooms are equipped with TV, video and compact disc player, private bar and oversized bath with separate shower. Bayu and Anjung rooms are equipped with dataport.

Tanjung Rhu - Langkawi

by sunflower7

Hi There,
My Husband and I are thinking of staying at Tanjung Rhu resort in November. (Last two weeks). Is this a nice hotel with good food? (very important!). Also what is the beach like? Is it clean,quiet with clear sea?! Will we get a lot of rain last two weeks in November? Also we love to snorkel. Can we snorkel from the baech at the hotel? I read somwhere that people were getting a rash from swimming in the sea at this beach with the plankton?! Any comments appriciated Kathryn

I have been to Tanjung Rhu...if I am not wrong it is not natural beach...man made. The concept of the hotel is nice, but I have to say that Datai was my first love. If you can afford the price difference - than opt for Datai.

The food in Langkawi is very average and highly priced.

Another place you may consider going to is Pangkor Laut, they have nice but small beach. It is less crowded becos it is a private island..and they have some snorkeling activities as well altho I must admit the sea at the north probly offers nicer marine stuff.

it is very hard to predict the weather these days.

tanjung rhu is a very exclusive resort. but generally speaking, the waters off the west coast of peninsular malaysia is not a clean and clear as the east coast. you can snorkel there but i'm not sure if there's much to see. again, having said it all, tanjung rhu is very very nice. you may also want to consider the datai or andaman.
