which is better family holiday destination penang or langkawi

Re: which is better penang or langkawi

Having lived in SE Asia for 11 years, and visited both islands with our children at various ages, I would have to say we prefer Langkawi. BUT, it depends on the ages of the family. When very young, the kids are happy to spend time on the beach and in the pool and actually require very little else. You can have a "grown-ups" holiday! We stayed at The Datai, in the rainforest, and it has a lovely small beach and beautiful villas. When we stayed in Penang, at Batu Ferringhi beach, the kids loved the action. Parasailing by speedboat, banana boat rides, horseriding etc. Then, when our kids were 13 and 10, we took them back to Langkawi and they loved the rainforest treks, the wildlife and the luxury of The Datai, which they remember and talk about to this day! Both islands are great family holiday places - its probably down to what you all like to do so that you all get what you want from the holiday.

Like previously said, it depends on what they like doing as the are quite different.
My choice too, would be Langkawi, have been to both, and enjoyed both, but Langkawi captured my heart.

Again, it depends on what your family enjoys -- and the time of year. I spent Chinese New Year (February) in Penang a few years ago, it was wonderful. Lion dancing in the streets, parades, temples holding open house. There's also reputedly an amazing Deepali festival hosted by the Indian community there. Penang island has many attractions -- I especially enjoyed a day at the Chinese temple above the city of Georgetown, and descended to find an Orchid Fair in a field below.

For a family vacation at the beach, Langkawi is the spot. Like Penang's Batu Ferringhi, there's many watersports and trips available at Pantai Cenang (which is much cheaper than the Datai). The water is much less polluted in Langkawi than around Penang.

Pulau Langkawi is still untouch of their forest

Last but not least is the local people's was very helpful and friendly when i got loss on the way to some of interesting places. The best memory at Pulau Langkawi is that the beauty and relax places around the Island like don't want to go home.

Ramadan Puasa Month

by fengshui

During this fasting, most of the stalls and restaurants operated by Muslim will be closed.
So the town will be kinda quiet.
They will break fast in the evening around 7pm, so these stalls & restaurants will only start operating after 3pm.
This does not applies to the fast food restaurant like KFC, McDonald & shopping centres.
Do remember to bring along bottled drinking water.

pantai tanjung rhu

by call_me_rhia

Tanjung Rhu is regarded as one of Langkawi's best beaches, and I surely agree with it. The beach is wide, white, sloping and fringed by many casuarina trees and few palm trees. Most of it is a public beach.

Out in the middle of the sea there are some interesting limestone formations that remind vaguely of Phi Phi Islands - however the water quality here isn't quite the same. It's possible to walk out to the formations at low tide, while swimming there is not recommended due to strong currents.

Tanjung Rhu is also the starting point for trips along the Kilim river (for the infamous eagle feeding), limestone caves and mangrove swamps. You just need a swimsuit.

burau island

by call_me_rhia

Burau island is a little island off the coast near Burau Bay. You can reach it from the resort, and on foot - only at low tide; so do find out the tide timetables.
It's quite interesting because the people at the hotel have built a path along and inside the island, with signs explaining all about the existing ecosystem. If you are into birdwatching this is the place to be. The island is is a roosting place for migratory birds.

Kuah Town

by wufei

The name 'Kuah' is a Malay word meaning 'gravy' and is associated with an ancient legend of two battling giants who overturned a gigantic pot of curry (kuah) at the spot where the town now stands.

Once a rustic town with few streets, present day Kuah is a thriving centre of modern hotels and shopping-cum-business complexes, but without the over-crowding and bustle of modern cities.

Kuah is a duty free shopping haven with a wide variety of goods sold at attractive prices and its restaurants offer excellent culinary delights, especially fresh seafood.
