Tranquility in Langkawi

by TripAdvisor Member charliechariot

We stayed here for ten days and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. The staff seemed genuinely friendly and helpful, the breakfast buffet was varied and of a good standard and the beach was good considering it was close to the town of Kuah. The room was a reasonable size for two people but a little cramped for three - it would have been worth paying extra for a sea view or even a suite. The swimming pools were excellent and the lower one with the boulders was our favourite - quiet in the early evening.

There was a lot of wildlife (monitor lizards, monkeys, hornbills and other birds) in the hotel grounds. The kayaks were well-priced (RM15 for one hour for a double) and it was good fun paddling around the two islands to the left of the beach.

The excellence of the hotel was a godsend because there isn't a great deal to do on Langkawi itself; some great beaches, a good cable car and an average aquarium. We visited the snorkeling platform by ferry; there were too many people, the platform needed updating and the water was a bit murky although there were many fish - experienced snorkelers might be disappointed but we did snorkel with almost a dozen black tipped reef sharks.

The town of Kuah is within walking distance but very disappointing - Sundays at Langkawi Fair was a reasonable Thai restaurant and Charlie's Place at the yacht club was good value but the best meal was an evening buffet around the pool at the hotel - excellent crayfish, slipper lobster and oysters along with barbequed steak, lamb cutlets and prawns.

Beautiful gardens

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed in this hotel for part of our honeymoon trip to Malaysia. You are greeted to the hotel by a beautiful reception looking out upon islands dotted in the sea. The main attraction to this hotel is the gardens and main swimming pool, this setting makes up for the below average beach. Having been previously informed that the beach was not great, we were more than happily surprised on how pretty the gardens actually were with the waterfalls and stream. The children's pool was also lovely, with water jets providing plenty of interest for young ones.
Our hotel room was in the one of the wings and was most satisfactory. It was decorated in blues and whites with shutters opening up the bathroom, we were very happy with our room which seemed to be recently decorated.
The hotels location to Kedah makes for easy exploring with night markets running on both Wednesday and Saturday. The nearest shopping mall is the Langkawi Fair selling very reasonable crafts and shoes. There is also a wonderful and very cheap Thai restaurant just to the right of the main entrance.
There was however one major problem with this resort and for those of you that don't yet know, as we didn't until arrival, the resort has recently been taken over and as of the 1st Feb 2006, there will be major refurbishment works! This includes as we were informed by reception, the filling in of the main pool with cement and extensive buildings work. We did not want to risk such disruption of our special holiday so moved resorts on the 1st day of work so are unsure how things have proceeded, but we wished to warn any others not in the know. It's a shame as the gardens are just perfect as they are.

Dont let the bed bugs bite

by TripAdvisor Member aussietraveller74

We recently stayed at the Sheraton Perdana on our trip to Langkawi, we stayed at the Tanjung Rhu prior to this resort and our expectations were high. We were dissapointed on most fronts with this resort.

The resort is ungoing major rennovations (which we knew before our stay), the main pool and half the hotel are closed. To compensate you recieve complementary buffet breakfast and dinner which is quite a good deal. A mini bus shuttles you to the temporary location for the buffets.

On our first night we both spent half the night itching and woke the next morning with bites all over our bodies. Other guests also complained of this problem, we were unsure if they were bed bugs although there was definitely something nipping in the night. We had the hotel completely strip our bed and had no further problems.

The service was friendly although at times not efficient. At the buffet you would quite often have to wait some time for drink service and bills.

When the resort is finished I am sure it will be fantastic. Some of the new villas are complted and have their own private pools.

Great Value - Renovations No Worry!

by TripAdvisor Member Hilmar

Spent four nights in a "Sea Facing" room. Great views over the lovely gardens to the sea. First message is to forget any concerns over the possible impact of the renovation work on your holiday. It made no difference WHATSOEVER to our enjoyment, and everyone I spoke to agreed. The great plus is the "goodies" Sheraton are giving to compensate for any possible inconvenience. These are free buffet breakfast and dinner EVERYDAY, the food was of good quality and there was a terrific variety which changed each evening. I paid some eighty four pounds a night for the room and if one deducts from this the cost of breakfast and dinner FOR TWO,you have to agree one is getting a great bargain! The biggest plus for the hotel is the really fantastic staff, all are very friendly, professional and ghenuinely nice.
Other Reviews speak of walking to the capital Kuah and eating out at Charlies place. Forget both, it is far too hot to walk to Kuah - which is a dump anyway, and the one meal we had at Charlies was b. awful.

Sheraton Perdana was OK...

by TripAdvisor Member slckiwi

Well, the resort was quite quiet - due to the construction. If you are looking for meeting lots of people and creating a party; this is not the place. However, except for the mushrooms growing in the corner of the room, the sections of the hotel that were open were of good quality. With the dinner and breakfast being included in the room rate, we felt the hotel offered good value. The buffet is varied and interesting. The wine list is pretty good, but expensive. If you purchase your own at Langkawi's Duty Free Stores, please be aware that the corkage will run you MYR 60 (about US$17!) if you want to enjoy your wine with dinner

As for the beach - I've seen better. The beach is very flat and tidal, which means you have to walk for ever to get water above your knees (if the tide is mid). Also, beneath the water, you are not really standing on sand, but broken shells, some sand, and small rocks. Those with sensitive feet may not enjoy this. A better idea is to rent one of their canoes or Hobie Cats and have some fun that way. Rental prices are reasonable.

As for the island, take a walk over to the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club for drinks before dinner. The views were terrific (and the drink prices were reasonable). Also, rent a car and drive around the island. We had great fun finding the waterfalls and beaches. They were wonderful - especially the beach down the road from the Four Seasons.

in my opinion not a 5 star hotel.

by TripAdvisor Member maz6000

we stayed at this hotel for 12 nights from the 13th june, I would say this hotel is a 3 star at the moment, I have no dought when the renovations have been completed it will be lovely but until then, it is not very good. tiles and flooring dirty and worn in bathrooms, furniture grubby, I will say the food was very good and complimentry to make up for the renovations, and the staff are brilliant and carn't do enough for you. we had a sea view room but had to change to a garden view as the sea view looks over the building site and can be noisy. we may have been spoilt as we came from the tanjung aru in borneo where that is definately a 5 star. at the perdana there are no recreational facilities going on at the moment because of the renovations, at one stage there was only 5 rooms taken by holiday makers it was vey quiet, we had the beach and pool to ourselves most days, which would have been nice, if it hadnt have rained evey day, apparently they say the rainy season came early this year, and it rained most of the time, the Island is very small and you can go round it in a day so we found it abit boring, we chose this hotel as it was the nearest 5star to the town but I think we should have checked it out abit better before we went. we also took the ferry to the mainland one day, one and a half hours each way. then half hour in a taxi. but it wasnt worth the journey, the shops were cheaper in kauh town, and a better selection. but beware as everything is fake, including the chocolate which seems a good buy, but when you taste it it is cheap chocolate. we bought an mp4 player and was told it was a genuine as it was stamped a well known make, when we got it home , the software is not compatable in uk. so beware especially if buying cameras etc. if you dont get a proper guarantee and a box with the makers name on it is not genuine.I did find the shoes very cheap and bought several pairs.when you go outside the hotel the toilet facilities are disgusting and most of the time you have to pay for them, no tissue, floors swimming in water and hard to find a proper loo, most are holes in the floor.Luckily we went to Borneo before we went to langkawi otherwise I would have felt we had not had a holiday, I couldnt wait to get home.

Nice Hotel, great staff

by TripAdvisor Member kohkoh

OK, you have read the previous reviews, this hotel is undergoing renovations. If you are fussy or looking for a hotel for a special occasion i.e. honeymoon then go elsewhere.

However, despite the renovations we felt that the Hotel could have done a little more for their guests. We have just returned from 6 days at the Sheraton Perdana. First impressions are not that good. The reception area looks like a gift shop converted (probably is) and the lobby is outdated.
Check in was efficient but due to the renovations the lifts are now quite a way from the lobby. We managed to get lost twice and in the end a staff member helped us. The reception staff could have helped us more instead of leaving us to our own devices.
Room was large, nicely decorated in white and blue, large king size bed, roomy bathroom. Little tired looking but I guess will be redecorated in phase 2. Half the hotel rooms are closed plus a restaurant and pool. It will become a Westin Hotel in 2007.
There are still two additional pools. One with large boulders and fountains, great for kids, the other a more traditional pool.

Long beach with sand and crushed shells which makes it a little hard to walk on bare feet. Nobody trying to sell you anything, or pester you in any way. Very relaxing.

Not too much noises with the renovations. We are light sleepers and we were not bothered. They do not start until after 9 am and finish about 10.

Complimentary breakfast and dinner is offered at this time. Both are good and the dinner theme changes nightly. The Sheraton staff are very helpful, friendly and try very hard to make your stay enjoyable. Not much to do in Langkawi compared with Bali and Thailand. Taxis are cheap and there are some other fairly cheap restaurants nearby if you get fed up with the buffet every evening.
Duty free island so alcohol can be purchased cheaply in the supermarkets, certainly cheaper than Sydney duty free!

One further point, the health club is excellent. My partner is a gym junkie and he was very very surprised at the facilities. I believe the new owners are reviewing whether to keep this gym, our answer is definitely - YES!

All in all not a bad hotel. If you have come from a upmarket 5 star hotel, as we did, you will notice the difference but then again you are not paying 5 star prices here and with the complimentary meals it is a bargain. We did think that a shuttle bus to the Langkawi Fair or Langkawi Palace would be useful to all guests.

Langkawi Peak season and Marimari travel agent's bad service

by pinkyolive

hi, everyone,

i just phoned the Marimari travel agent after 2 days waiting for the resort booking information, they simply told me langkawi island is fully booked for the month Jul, and Aug, not even 1 room that i can get through them in this island, is it possible?

and what makes upset is that they didn't have to let me wait for 2 days to tell me No. if i didn't ask them my booking today, i guess they will just keep me waiting till God knows when, can't believe their service, already shaked my anticipation for going to malaysia.

anyway, stll have the problem here, need a place to stay for 3 or 4 days in langkawi for 2 adults and 2 kids, will it possible to find in this time. please help me here.

Well this depends on the date you are looking at? The last week of August, avoid these dates as 31 August is our National Day and coincident with a weekend. Other days is ok. Try this www.awana.com.my, this hotel is quiet nice. Look for Awana Porto Malai. There are a lots of other hotels too, like Westin, Tanjung Rhu. Do let me know if you need help in this.

Re: Langkawi Peak season and Marimari travel agent's bad service

by pinkyolive

hi, fern,

thank you for the reply.
i will be in Langkawi on 19th of July, maybe stay 3 or 4 days, if we really like the place we can extend our stay, since we are going for 2 weeks in malaysia, just need to be back to KL by the end of July for back home.

i have check a lot for the resort in Langkawi, my first day which on 19th, i wanted to stay in Tanjung Rhu Resort, but Marimari email me a negtive answer.
so if i can find any 4 star resort with good kids club will be good, but my worry is that maybe no any room at all in langkawi, since marimari gave me the idea that the whole island is fully booked for 2 months. i really don't know, can you please tell me is it possible to find room for next week?

thank you so much

If you have a short booking period (30 days or less), you never depends on just one agent. Check out with few agents at the same time. Some agents have rooms allocations and they can confirm with you immediately.

You could try out Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, Bayview Hotel, Pelangi Beach Resort, Berjaya Beach & Spa Resort, Datai Hotel, Four Seasons Resort. I know why they said these two months is busy as the Saudi Tourist are a lot here in Malaysia these few months starting July.

Do let me know how is the booking.
