Mousedeer roundabout- a reminder of the past
Melaka was founded in 1396 by an exiled Sumatran prince named Parameswara.
Legend had it that Parameswara on his hunting trip one day, he rested under a tree, and one of his dogs cornered a mousedeer and in defense, the mousedeer kicked the dog smartly on its nose. Impressed by the mousedeer’s courage and what he believed was a good luck sign, Parameswara decided to build his empire on this sacred land and named it after the tree he was sitting under, which was the Melaka tree
Here is a mousedeer replica in the centre of Melaka town.
