Heeren House (very central, next the harbour). Has air conditioned rooms.
Riviera bay Resort (luxurious and palatial) 10km out of town, beside the sea, at Tanjung kling. A better chance to meet friendly local Malays. Taxi costs about £2.
My hotel:
The FIVE STAR Ramada Renaissance, managed by Marriot.
A huge oversupply of hotel rooms and the Asian financial crisis have pushed down the price of hotel rooms in Malaysia.
I was paying £199 per week for half board.
The hotel was full of noisy school groups from Singapore and down-market Chinese package tourists from various countries.
In some rooms the wallpaper was stained, carpets were torn, baths were chipped, and dust gathered under cupboards.
In corridors there were sometimes cigarette ends that remained on carpets for weeks.
Parts of the hotel were in need of refurbishment.
The food in the three restaurants was stomach-wrenchingly poor: canned fruit, oven chips, stale pastries, reheated stew, cheap over-cooked meat, cold soup...
A bluebottle sometimes hovered over the none-too-clean cutlery and cups...
The coffeeshop played rap music containing a certain four letter word.
'Here you get what you pay for,' said the charming, urbane Chinese hospital doctor I was visiting due to an attack of diarrhoea. 'The Renaissance is not really Five Star! In London I paid over £100 for one night in a small cupboard-sized room. London can do that because it has a huge number of world-class attractions. Not like Melaka.'
Classy rooms can be had for around £30 depending on month and package. see above
Dang! Where's my pork satay??
by bpacker about Sun May Hiong Satay House
Now, way before the big Melaka VT meet, I dreamt of eating the pork satay in Melaka. It was reputed to be good and they were known to serve unmentionables like intestines to go with it. So armed with an old address I went and attempted to lead a group to find it. We set off, confident in the knowledge that it was at the end of old Jonker street. And by the time we walked there, hot and tired and bothered, it wasn't there! It was only a couple of days later, that I found out from Chin where it was. Apparently, it was so bloody hidden that only the locals knew where it was. Just listen to the directions..go to donald and lily's laksa shop. Look across the street. You'll see a row of shophouses. Walk there. You'll see the shop with one lone stove and a really old uncle. Confused? I don't blame you if you are. I have a rough idea where it is though and I will write a full review when I am done testing. In the meantime, just take it from my friend Chin, that the satay is not bad. You'll be piled with a big plate of satay the moment you sit down and payment will be dependent on the number of sticks counted in the end!
Other helpful tips:
-There's a teensy weensy sign at Heeren House
-It's somewhere behind Heeren House ( beyound a huge car park)
-Don't bother calling the satay house, they are better selling satay than giving directions
-Go to Orang utan Gallery ( the place with the picture of a big monkey) and sit down at shop beside it called eha! . Sip a drink while you curse at the bad weather. After your sanity has returned, ask the owner where to find the damm satay shop.

Heeren House or Hotel Puri
by galianohere
We are going to Melaka in February and can't decide which of these hotels to stay at.
We are thinking maybe the Puri but would also consider the Heeren House although we can't find much information on it.
Can anyone tell me about these two hotels. Good location ? Quiet ? Clean rooms ?

Hi!
Heeren House and Hotel Puri are located along the same street, both within walking distance to the historical city's attractions (Haren closer to the Stadhuys, Puri closer to Jonker Walk). Personally, I would chose Puri as its look much better and well maintained as compare to Haren.
Enjoy Melaka!
