    If location and a reasonably-priced hotel room is what you're after, stay at the Equatorial. If not, everything will be a sore point for you. Since this is Melaka's more popular hotels, the lobby will be overcrowded with folks, the buffet breakfast will be catered for masses and the service will be so-so. The rooms are somewhat plain too. Perhaps the only saving grace is the big, luxurious pool. There are 3 interconnecting pools at this place and lots of palm trees to give you a secluded feel. A must, given that there are always lots of tourists..

    Hotel Equatorial Melaka is an international business resort ideally located in the heart of the historical precint of Malacca. It is located within walking distance to historical sites, museums, Jonker Street (the famous antique row), Mahkota Parade shopping mall and night spots. This 22-storey international class hotel is the only tall building allowed to be build in the historical area of the city, giving guest to the hotel sweeping views of the Straits of Malacca and historical landmarks around it, bringing the allure of historical Melaka with modern day conveniences,

    The hotel features 496 luxuriously furnished rooms and a host of food and beverage outlets including the award-winning Equatorial signature restaurants, the Golden Phoenix Chinese Restaurant ,Kampachi Japanese Restaurant and Seri Nyonya Peranakan Restaurant where cooking class for Peranakan dishes would be held occasionally. The hotel also has the largest ballroom in the city with excellent convention and meeting facilities.

    It's the tallest building in Melaka's historical precint.

    This is one expensive hotel. So far, I've no deals about cheaper bookings. The room per night starts from RM410. Even with a corporate rate, its goes only RM180 per night.

    The only five star hotel in Melaka, it deserves its rating. Wonderfully friendly staff, very attentive, especially Eveline at the front desk and Randhir who is trying to imitate eveline's good qualities..
    Excellent food at its five restaurants, possibly also the best in Melaka.
    Marble stair cases, chandeliers in the lobby...
    close to the city centre and the shopping plaza at mahkota plaza..

    The Dim Sum which I cannot partake in many of the chinese restaurants in Malaysia ( because of too many pork based dishes, I am Jewish ) is offered here as Brunch on
    Sundays... and it is Halal.. safe for a jew to eat!!

    Malaysia has heavily invested in some of the african countries.. Ghana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe among them.. In South America, I think it is Bolivia.. The current president of Bolivia grew up in Kuala Lumpur..
    In any case, with the current despotic regime in Zimbabwe, it does leave a little distaste that the Govt of Zimbabawe, meaning Mr Mugabe is part owner of Hotel Equatorial!!!

  • I didn't stay here; but did go to the coffeeshop and used its restroom facilities as well as the reception/concierge desk to ask about stamps. Very nice service. Receptionists spoke very good English and I understood them (and they understood me.)

    Tall building and in the centre of the historical section of town.

    This is an ideal spot to stay. First of all, all the historic sites are within walking distance. and the neighbourhood has a lived in feeling and not the isolated feelings of some hotels. The views from upper flors ( I am in 15th floor ) is stunning, panoramic.

    Unlike many upper class hotels in Malaysia, the staff here are knowledgeable and very friendly ( I was thinking of Regency Hotel in Malaysia). I look forward to the elegant dining at the Nyonya restaurant and coffee and tea at their coffee shops. The rooms are very comfortable.
    they usually have promotions which are good value. Currently they have a promotion for 250 ringitt ( about 60 usd) double which includes 25 usd worth of food.

    Definitely one of the more enjoyable stays at a hotel in Asia.

    The concierge Amin was very knowledgeable about the transportation and other facilities around Malaysia and spent time explaining them to me. The front desk had LeYin who was as pleasant as she could be. she even called Hotel Puri and made reservations for me. I will definitely return to this hotel before i leave Malaysia and of course yet another dinner at seri nyonya restaurant. How I wish I could share this lovely dinner with my friens in Cuba!
