Nice Home away from Home

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on February 23, 2006

I couldnt get over the widest smile that greeted me last night as I entered the hotel. Ella was at the front desk and she did not hide the pleasure which was mine as well. Really felt like walking into a friends home rather than a hotel.

Unique Quality: This is the second time I am staying here in 2006 and I am sure there would be many more. I had two days in between trips from USA to Singapore and the next leg of my asian journey. Rather than spend the time in the mindless town of Singapore, take a bus, just four hours and you are in this warm and welcome place. What a difference! When would the singaporeans learn from the Malaysians, to become a little bit more human!

Directions: If you are coming by bus, take No 17 from the bus station which would let you off right in front of the stadhuys, walk over the bridge and take a left and follow the road and within minutes you would see the sign of Hotel Puri

Extremely Friendly Staff

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 12, 2006

One of the advantages of staying here is this. If you are a history buff, one of the owner directors of the place is Dr Tan, president of the International Zheng Ho society. Very friendly and accomodating. The Front Desk Staff, Ella and also the management, Ingrid, who is Dr Tan's daughter in law are all very helpful. Ingrid suggested Nancys Rest for lunch. While I was there she called to say that Dr Tan would be free a little later to meet with me.
SO i extended the stay another day. I am quite happy at this hotel. The breakfast was not that bad either..

Boutique Hotel in the BabaNyonya district

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 10, 2006

The staff at the Hotel Equatorial, Ooi LeYin was kind enough to make a reservation at Puri. I would have stayed on at Equatorial but the offers of food was too much for a small eater like me.
Hotel PUri is an old Baba House and the architecture is very pleasing. it has been turned into a Boutique hotel.
the only disadvantage is that most of the guests are foreigners and I would have preferred a more local presence. But that is just personal. The central area for breakfast is delightful. It is nice to relax and write..

Unique Quality: Unlike other hotels, Puri offers wireless Internet all through the hotel and does not charge for it. for example Equatorial charges close to 40 ringitt per day for wireless . and internet costs are around 4 ringitts per hour so it is an enticement.

Superior rooms in January 2006 cost 172 ringgits but a 10% discount can be had, thus around 155 Myr per night all taxes included andbreakfast thrown in.

A culture so rich in so small a stretch of road

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on May 9, 2005

The hotel is marvelous. Clean rooms and pretty efficient A/C system for every room. Architecture of this old building is interesting. Cafe is nothing to shout about but the surrounds are its strongest points. Places to eat flank it on the street and across it. Jonkers Walk (Jln Hang Jebat) is just behind it. Cross the bridge at the end and you will reach The Stadthuy's and all the integrated museums there, Bukit St Paul and the last standint A'Famosa gateway.

Highly recommended if you want to be close to Melaka's historic attractions.

Staff are very friendly and the hotel does boast its own "parking lot". Just drive there and let them take care of it. Best if you inquire in advance and tell them you are driving. The lot limited.

Rooms are affordably priced at MYR200 per night with breakfast included.

Unique Quality: Second hall after the front desk has swallows nesting at the corners of the ceiling. I sincerely hope they do not chase them away.

Boasts a tiny history room for those who need an introduction to Melaka's rich past.

House was owned by a prominent Melaka resident and was restored to be Hotel Puri as it stands today.

Directions: Can't miss it on Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock. Traffic is only one way.

Staying in the Heart of Town

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on March 21, 2005

Honestly, this is where I'll stay if I were here on a trip with Hubby. Not only is this place more atmospheric and cheaper than the hotel I mentioned above, it is in the heart of town, in the midst of all the little streets, antique shops and great restaurants...
The only cons to choosing this place are the small interior and the lack of parking facilities. You'll need to park your car a couple of lanes away from the narrow street where the hotel is.

Unique Quality: I was told that this joint used to be a luxury home belonging to a millionaire named Tan Kim Seng and it's actually situated in a millionaire's street.

Fantastic Ambience...

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 26, 2005

I didn't stay at Hotel Puri as it was all booked because of the holiday season during Xmas...
Since I heard so many talk about the place, I made sure that I made a visit to the hotel when I was in Melaka, and Hotel Puri didn't dissapoint me....

Fantastic Place, i loved the grand piano sitting in the lounge... and it had a great ambience...
You can have cold beer ( especially in Melaka HOT weather ) in their cafe located in a small garden inside the hotel...
I guess the strongest characteristics Puri has is its surroundings..Certainly deserves 2 thumbs up...
Shall make sure i book earlier next time...
( that a tip for ya all too! )

Looks Good

by written on December 14, 2004

Ok... no I didn't stay here. But as soon as I do, I'll revise this tip how's that? The website looks pretty good, so check it out.

Unique Quality: It just looked pretty from the exterior already. The newly painted facade made it stand out from the rest of the hotels on the street. Hey, they say first impressions count, right!

I really like this hotel. It's very peranakan and it possess so much charm and history.

It's located in Jonkers Street and it's very convenient. Walking distance to the Church and to small little cute shops.

The staff is very helpful and i find their online reservation response fast.

Unique Quality: Old shop-house converted into a hotel.

Stay in a Restored Peranakan House

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on November 21, 2004

Hotel Puri is a restored heritage house which was formerly the ancestral home of the family of Tan Kim Seng (1805-1864), a third generation Straits Chinese, more commonly known as Peranakan. The building façade and lobby still maintain the classic Peranakan architectual style. In contrast, the rooms are rather plain, although still comfortable with all the modern hotel amenities. The breakfast buffet is adequate but nothing great. Good value for money though. Overall, a good choice is you are planning to tour the historical sites of the old city.

Unique Quality: The best part of Hotel Puri is its location. Right in the heart of the old Peranakan district, which still contains many fabulous mansions from Melaka's glory days as a colonial trading center. Also, only a block from the great Jonker Street night market and a short stroll to the river and colonial attractions. Also worth noting is that they have their own secure parking area, so be sure to ask the doorman about it when you check in.

Directions: old city

Wonderful experience

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on August 12, 2004

We had a deluxe twin room on the ground floor, which was in the newer wing. It was very clean and the air conditioner was almost too efficient. Appreciated the free bottle of water and the tea making facilities.
Nothing was too much trouble to the people at reception.
The breakfast buffet was a bit ordinary, but the frsh fruit and hot (cook it yourself toast) were good.
Be carefu with the traffic outside at the peak times when the road carries heavy traffic and has no pavement.

Unique Quality: The Courtyard between the wings, internet access, and historical museum were all bonuses.

Premier boutique hotel in jonker Walk

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 30, 2004

Hotel Puri Melaka is the historical city's premier boutique hotel. It is located within the Jonker Walk area in the heart of the old part of the city. Being in Jonker Walk area, the hotel is surrounded by antique and bric-a-brac shops and it is only a stroll away from Malacca's historical precinct.

Unique Quality: As a boutique hotel, it is housed in a carefully restored Peranakan house (built in 1876) which once belonged to the decendants of an eminent philanthropist and rubber plantation owner, Tan Kim Seng. Extending 100 metres long, its distinct characteristics are its beautiful and intricately decorated façade and the impressive length of the house. Retaining its old charm, Hotel Puri Melaka provides modern amenities to its hotel guests.

Directions: Within Jonker Walk area.

Got hold of this hotel through recommendation on a forum, very nice hotel, the reception area is quite welcoming and nicely decorated... the compound is quite nice, there is an open cafe with relaxing ambience.... c the pix i attach ;)

Don't expect five-star quality room their rooms are decent nothing fancy ....and be prepare to climb stair..highest floor is the 3rd floor.... they have a homepage

Unique Quality: ermm...there r sallows building nests at the drawing room, rather interesting ... the hotel has a relaxing and calm enivornment nothing to fake....

the staff r not exactly warm, but are very efficient, u can get them to arrange transport to get to places in the town, which is a great plus point considering its rather hard to get cab .... they can even arrange transport to singapore :)

I like this place since the first time browsing on the net. The Peranakan style in architecture looks very nice. Added with historical story of its place and old stuffs, from bullock cart to ceramic ware and wood carvings make this Hotel Puri so gorgeous.

Unique Quality: I saw the swallow flying in the evening, entering the museum room of Hotel Puri. It's cool. Then my room on 3rd floor, every morning I open the window, I find the roofs of Chinese houses style. Nice, nice, nice ....

Directions: From Dutch Square to Heeren Street [now Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock], the opposite side from China Mansion
