nonya food, masakan peranakan
by ukirsari
i remember the very first time hearing my parents talking about "masakan peranakan" or strait born chinese meals when i was a kid. their topic was about "can we go out with our children to try peranakan food?"
then later, my mum pick a women magazine and show me about "nonya [or nyonya] food". there's several food recipes from peranakan kitchen. with teaser or opening words as follows, "kalau memasak masakan nonya bumbunya mesti pas, tidak boleh kurang. karena ini menjamin keasliannya." it's indonesian that can be translated in english as 'if you about cooking with nonya recipe, you should follow the ingredients precisely as the original cooking made.'
well, later i want to know about what is exactly the peranakan eateries look-like in malacca. a place which is famous for its strait born chinese food.
so, this 2004 malacca trip became one of my memorable gastronomic trips ;)

Orna Golf & Country Club
by chiabh
This Taiwanese owned club has 3 nines viz the East, West and North Nines, each playing to 3066m, 3133m and 2796m repectively from the blue tee... The fairway is very undulating with water coming into play in many holes... The 7th, 8th and 9th holes of the East course are particlualr challenging water holes... The greens are also undulating and trickly and 3 puts are the norm...
The club has accommodation for golfers who would like to stay and play... It has both individual rooms as well as bungalow (for up to 6 golfers) for daily stay... The Chinese restaurant (Restaurant OGCC) is highly popular for wedding dinner reception in Melaka... Buggy is on fairway for normal play except when the fairway is very wet after continuous rain... With the very undulating and wide fairway, playing with buggy on track is very demanding on one's physical fitness... In short, you will not enjoy the round of golf if buggy is not on fairway...
The White Staute at St Paul's Church
by bpacker
Ever noticed a white statue near St Paul's church in Melaka, Malaysia? Before you think this is the patron saint of the church, let me just say that it's actually the greatest Christian figure in Asia - St Francis Xavier. He died years ago while waiting to enter China but was temporarily buried in Melaka. When it was exhumed to be taken to Goa, it was found to be incorrutible! The Pope canonized Francis in 1622, but only upon the condition that Francis' right arm be brought to Rome. Legend recalled that when the arm was severed, fresh blood flowed out . Years later in Melaka , a marble statue was erected in honour of the saint but its arm went missing in the 1980's. Guess which arm was it?

by Audrey118 about Malacca House
There are very many similar shops along the jonker street as well as along Hereen St (Tun Tan Cheng Lock) and now it is slowly spreading to the smaller streets along J Tokong etc. Many of these prewar old houses r in bad shape, and having entreprenuers taking over it, at least helps to preserve its old time peak. Just imagine the wealth that these houses once had....
worthnoting is the extremely long houses, some more than 200 feet deep inside...venture to one...it is just amazing....
