Charming Family Owned!

My stay was fantastic!! River View Guest House is a small home style pension sitting on the picturesque Malacca (Maleka) River. The home belongs to a wonderful couple and their two children. Being in the hotel industry, the proprietor and I had a long conversation over some home made corn bread. She is a former sales manager for a 5 star luxury hotel chain and traveled quite a bit in her time. Opting to have more time and freedom, she followed my personal dream and opened the guest house. They speak English so well you'd mistake them for American expats. The guest house itself was converted into a home with about 5 or 6 rooms with a beautiful veranda upstairs. Rates are extremely reasonable. Since I hate sleeping in a room with noisy sketchy people, I opted to purchase a double for just about $20! WiFi is complementary but not the greatest connection. You also have free use of the kitchen as long as you clean up after yourself. NO SMOKING!!! except outside if you need to do that... Restroom is shared but kept clean.

Unique Quality: I was asked by the owner... "Why would you stay here if you work for an upscale resort??" She asked me because I had just come from Traders Hotel in KL. For your information, I usually do a mix of budget and luxury accommodation. KL also has the cheapest high end hotels in the world. I spent less than $200 for two nights in a 4 star hotel up close and personal with the Petronas Towers. I told her I was attracted to the character of her home and that luxury doesn't always mean turndown service and fake smiles :) To her delight, she cut me another piece of pie and we shared a cup of home brewed tea :)

parasailing

by rehc

I was told that there is parasailing in malacca. If so, where do we go for parasailing & how do we get there from Singapore? Thanks

Re: parasailing

by bkarjee

Not sure if there is parasailing in Melaka, but going to Melaka from Singapore is very simple. There are numerous buses (around 10 per day) plying in this route. These buses start from Lavender Street bus terminal and charge around S$15 per person. The journey time is around 4 hrs. For the journey, just show up at the bus terminal and buy the ticket. No need to ook in advance. Expect rush on the weekends. Try to contact them at this phone number +65 6293 5915

Travel Tips for Melaka

Melaka, Great Getaway Destination

by muddybok

Melaka can be considered as one of the most popular historical destination for both Malaysian and Singaporean. The A'Famosa is the most popular landmark in SEA, even more popular than KLCC Twin Towers.

Often time, special groups (such as Fiat, Alfa, Lotus and Harley owners' groups) will have treasure hunt or makan cum historical trips to Melaka. Believe me, most of them already been to Melaka many times but they will not mind keep coming back.

Take good care of your feet!!!

by cafank

You will do a lot of walking when in Melaka so make sure you have comfortable footwear. There are cobbled streets, rocky paths and footpaths as well as a few parks for relief.

And I haven't mentioned the shopping centre walkign yet!

Melaka Most Active Exhibition Centre

by Azri_Azmi

While in Melaka, beside visiting historical and popular hot tourist spots, you may check out the M.I.T.C (Melaka International Trade Centre) Hall in Ayer Keroh to see what exhibition is being held there at that time.

M.I.T.C always hosting medium sizes exhibition and some are large even. Usually the event or exhibition held here will be promoted widely across Melaka by promo banner.

Art Studio & more

by mansionion about The OrangUtan House

The name may be deceiving but this is actually an art studio by Malaccan born artist Charles Cham. The exterior of the building is quite unique & eye catching, once inside U'll admire Charles' work of arts.

If U not really into arty stuff, maybe the t-shirts with loud design by him will be of interest to U - a good souvenier to take home as these t-shirts are exclusively available here. Paintings, arty stuffs and t-shirts, lots of t- shirts to chose from. Depends on what U wanna buy, prices for paintings varry and t-shirt start frm RM20 above.

Outdoor Karaoke Anyone ?

by yipsufen

One of the famous activities or favourite pastimes for the Malaccan folks seem to be outdoor Karaoke. Along the Jonker Walk, you can see Chinese Association holding Karaoke singing sessions. Bring your own CD and just pay a small fee, you can sing to your heart's content. If you are curious, sit down at the ample seats and enjoy their high-pitch singing of chinese oldies from the 1940s. However, they are mainly cater for the middle-aged.

You may also spot some ladies practising line dancing inside the association hall. It added some uniqueness to Jonker Walk which some tourists find it fascinating.
