Good location
I stayed at The Baba House during my first 2 trips to Melaka (my third was at Hotel Puri, which is just right across the road). I quite like this hotel, for the look and feel about it. It continues to hold the nostalgic feeling of the peranakan houses with its decoration etc. Even the common toilet behind the lobby has nice little mirror!
it is centrally located, if you drive, make sure you get into the private car park lot, otherwise you would have to park outside along the road or even somewhere else!
The breakfast is average but good enough to fill your stomach. In any case, most people visiting Melaka ventures out to the street to savour all the delicious food!

Authentic Peranakan House
This hotel used to be a Peranakan Mansion and it has been modified into a hotel without losing the Peranakan details. The room we stayed was not well ventilated, but for a night it didn't bug me that much. The breakfast was very simple. Besides these, the location is the best part of it. You are just a few minutes walk to main attractions in Melaka.
Unique Quality: The location and the Peranakan style decoration

The Baba House - Courtyard
Unique Quality: This is an airy place which opens up to sunlight and some fresh air to the whole house / hotel. A good place for breakfast or reading the morning papers.
Along the corridor you can see some Baba & Nyonya photos hanging on the wall and some peranakan eating utensils and decorations.
Just beneath the spiral staircase is a hot & cold water dispensing machine. If you like, you can climb up the steep spiral staircase and explore the quiet corners of upper floors. Look at some twin chinese words hanging on the entrance of each walkway.

The Baba House - Reception
Once I stepped into the reception area of Baba House, it immediately exudes an authentic feel. The antique clock ticking also added some old charm to this peranakan house. Each piece of furniture and furnishing here complements the whole ambience. Staff manning the reception counter are dressed in Nyonya attire and are so friendly and always ready to offer help and information.

Step Back In Time...
As the name suggests, the hotel is converted from a few rows of typical traditional Baba houses and they used to be the homes of the Babas. It maintains the heritage structure of a typical Baba house and rejuvenates the culture of the Babas by providing comfortable rooms.
Come stay here and it will take you back to revisit the traditional lifestyles of the Babas. Have an experience which will leave an everlasting impression in your memories.

The antique hotel with air-con
Very satisfy cost RM80 per room with air-con, a double bed with bathroom attached. Nicely setup including breakfast but do not expect 5 star breakfast. This location is right in the old street which means you are staying inside the old house but already many times renovated to maintain its outlook. Very antique, very Melaka.

Baba House or Hotel Puri
Help - can't decide which hotel to stay in. There is a group of us going to Melaka in March 2005 and we can't decide which one to stay in out of these ones. We want the heritage type hotel. Which do you think is the nicest hotel out of the two? Both in terms of upkeep, service and cleanliness.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Re: Baba House or Hotel Puri
Have stayed in both. I prefer Baba House ... its more cosy and quiet :-)
Have fun !
Re: Baba House or Hotel Puri
have you looked at heeren house?
Re: Baba House or Hotel Puri
Stayed in Hotel Puri. Quite nice. Baba House is just opposite.
Re: Baba House or Hotel Puri
The main building of Hotel Puri is nice, like old Peranakan home, but the rooms in the far back are not great at all and resemble any other generic hotel. The rooms in the main building may be better (although probably more expensive), but I didn't see any of those.
Re: Baba House or Hotel Puri
Thanks everyone for your input, it looks like the Baba House wins out. I'm going to research the net now to book it!
Thanks again.
