by wufei A British surveyor called William Cameron discovered the Highlands in 1885 and brought back praise of "this fine plateau with gentle slopes shut in by 'lofty mountains'" to his Government. Then Sir Hugh Low, a Resident in Malaya suggested Cameron Highlands as a resort for "health, pleasure, gardening or farming purposes". 41 years after William Cameron had sung its beauty to the world, Cameron Highlands received its first step towards the resplendent glory that we see today. Roads were constructed, reservations zoned, cottages and hotels built, recreation areas and parks planned, vegetable and fruit farms tilled and tea plantations experimented with. It is said 'that the Highlands' first holiday-maker came in the form of wealthy Chinese businessman who sought the solitude of the hills by building a mansion for the seasonal visits. With the building of rest-houses and hotels, numerous British civil servants stationed in Malaya flocked here, taking to the cool weather as if they were back home in England. When the second World War broke out, the Highlands saw no more visitors except for holidaying Japanese officials at various rest houses/bungalows during the Japanese Occupation of Malaya. When peace returned to the country, so did holiday-makers, tourists and lovers of wild beauty and cool hills of this Utopia. It is here that the legendary 'Thai Silk King' Jim Thompson, mysteriously disappeared in the forests, hence and beauty, mystery and the adventure Cameron Highlands promises. Nature created the beauteousness of Cameron Highlands. A refuge tucked away in the North East of the Pahang mountains, a rendezvous for never-ending pleasures of the senses of the mine. To see, smell, hear and touch the loveliness of Cameron Highlands is to harmonise with the purity of Mother Nature. flowers in the garden by Wild_Orchid My family and I have visited this resort many times. They have seven blocks of studio apartments, and also two and three-bedroom apartments which are suitable for family groups. We stayed at the apartments which are large and comfortable, although the furniture was a bit old. During the day, you slide open the doors so that the rooms open up and you can see from one end to the other. At night, just close the sliding doors to have some privacy.
It has a good location which is up on the hill and the garden (seven acres on a hill 5,000 feet above sea level) is filled with beautiful flowers and pine trees surround the property. Facilities include a squash court, indoor pool, sauna, tennis court, and jogging track. Having a barbeque in the garden is also possible with some pre-arrangement. In 2004, they had an offer for Malaysian residents: RM188++ including a RM80 cash voucher to be spent on-site at the Restaurants. Not sure if they have any offer for 2005, but you can check with them. If you don't have a car, and rely on public transport, then this would not be a good choice for you, as it is quite a way to walk up hill from the nearest bus-stop. However, you can always take a taxi.
