Malaysia 2002

"Kuala-Lumpur, Taman Negara rainforest and islands!"
Kuala Lumpur - a piece of Switzerland in the South-East Asia!
I truely loved it! Exotic yet cozy and clean!
"Taman Negara National Park"
An organized tour has a bit biting price, but it deserves it! Wide range of interesting eco excursions (night jungle walk, trekking, boat trips)
The hotel "Mutiara Taman Negara" surprisingly appeared to be an oasis of civilization in the heart of impassable jungle!
"Langkawi island"
Langkawi Island – kilometers of beaches and cleanest water. Rural atmosphere, optimal for those who wishes to forget about the city bust and all-night entertainment.

Taman Negara

Hi, I hope to spend a few days in Taman Negara National Park soon. I would like to trek for maybe three days and if possible sleep in one of the hides for viewing animals at night. Can I hire sleeping bags and other necessary camping gear in or near the park? Should I hire a guide, where can I do do this and is it expensive? Any other advice would be appreciated, thanks

driving in malaysia
by pacchi
Thanks guys for your prompt replies. The idstances certainly seem to be manageable- but can one do this in a sort of circle without coming back to KL every time. Can i like go from Kl - cameron - Penang - Temen negara - KL. Are the distances between these cities any shorter- is one on the way to the other? Or which is the best way to plan this. I want to leave Kl on the 10th and return on the 14th after driving thru as much of Malaysia as I can- any suggestions?
Thank you

You can drive from KL - Cameron - Penang. From Penang to Taman Negara, you can go via East West Highway to Kelantan, then drive thru Terengganu and to Taman Negara. Be warned, it sounds like Highway, but actually it's not. It's single lane country road. On this road only if you want to see as much scenery as possible. If not, drive to KL and go to Taman Negara via Karak Highway is faster way.

Hi there
With some careful planning, you could avoid KL. In fact, try to avoid driving through the city of KL each time because it is always jammed. Try your best not to use the Sg Besi Toll, and if coming from the South (i.e. from Johor or Malacca) then after Nilai, you can turn off and use the highway that takes you through the KLIA (not sure of the name : KLIA expressway??) and go north from there.
If you use the North Klang Valley Expressway, you can start at Penang, and onto Cameron highlands (exit at Simpang Pulai, see my driving tips on my Cameron Highlands page) then after that, you can come to KL, before proceeding through to Taman Negara (which is NOT easy to find). There are several routes and the most common way is using the Karak highway, then through some small towns - the names of which I can't be sure of, sorry!
Please check with the Mutiara Taman Negara hotel on how to get there-see if they can e-mail you a map.
Beware that some roads may be shorter in distance according to the map, but if you are not driving on a toll road, then you may find yourself on the road for longer and waste time and petrol, not to mention having to meet with poor road conditions. Best to stay on the expressway, and to pay toll, and not waste time and energy :-)
Best of luck and happy travels
