    Quaint little place

    by

As usual, it was a last minute trip to the island and I couldnt really be bothered with ploughing through the net to look for a place to stay. I just needed a few things and I am a happy camper : (1) Clean & equipped bathroom (no hot water is fine with me) ; and (2) A decent bed.

I was lucky, someone helped me book a room in this rather charming place. I got a basic chalet (not beach fronting, though) for RM50. I got all that I asked for and I am happy :-)

There is a whole array of accomadation here, ranging from the basic cheap A-hut to the fully air-conditioned chalet.

Unique Quality: I like the location of the chalets. Its all on rocks. But there are proper steps, of course. You can walk around barefooted. Thats really cool :-)

Directions: To get to Panuba Inn, make sure you tell your boatman to drop you off at Panuba jetty.

    Nice Inn on Nice Beach

    by

A nice place to chill out. The only place to stay on Panuba Beach. There is a dive centre attached to it. Dive Centre is Bali Hai. Panuaba is next to ABC Beach. Sometimes, if the speedboat doesn't go to the Panuba Jetty, alight at the ABC jetty and take a boat taxi there. Boat taxi costs RM5 per pax per trip.

There is a quiet beach and the beach is swimmable and quite nice for snorkelling.

Unique Quality: Good views of the ocean from the rooms. Rooms all face the sea.

There is a restaurant which serves reasonably-priced food.

An AC Double Room is RM98. Email them to book. There are cheaper rooms and for those who are looking for family rooms, do check out there website.

    Go with the new units!

    by

Except for the bathroom sink falling down and the freezing 10.30pm boat ride back from Air Batang in the rain, the 2-night stay here was fairly uneventful ... ;p

The resort itself is pleasant enough, with pretty landscaping and a wooden jetty and restaurant. The rooms are built on the hill, so there will be some flights of stairs to conquer, depending on the location of your unit.

Pick the newer chalets (D and SD types) if you intend to stay here, as the older rooms are, well, rustic, so you risk inconveniences like leaking sinks which eventually, if you're lucky, come crashing down. Was offered a waiver of the weekend surchage only after a complaint was made. No change of room was offered, but a handyman fixed up a new sink in about an hour.

Unfortunately, the newer units are definitely not for budget travellers. They come with hotel-style frills like hot showers, refrigerators, televisions and even coffee/tea makers. They are larger and also enjoy prime locations - right over the beach / shoreline. The older and smaller chalets are higher up the hill and may not offer a view of the sunset.

For those who intend to have dinner at a different place every night, or go exploring the island on foot, Panuba may not be particularly convenient. Its nearest neighbour is the Bamboo Hill Resort in Air Batang Village, which is a 15-minute trek on an unlit jungle path. The only other way to get to Panuba is by sea taxi, which costs RM5 to/from Air Batang and RM20 to/from Tekek Village.

Panuba is very popular with westerners (over 75% of the guests were caucasians). Book at least 1 month ahead for the peak season. There is a RM20 surcharge on all units during the peak season and weekends.

A type units: RM45 (not recommended)
B type units: RM68 (not recommended)
    D type units: RM98 (single, double) / RM115 (triple/quad)
    SD type units: RM130(single, double) / RM160 (triple/quad)

Unique Quality: - Monkey Bay within trekking/walking distance
    - Air-conditioned chalets (except A type units)
    - Twin or double beds available
    - Bed linen provided
    - Towels and soap/shampoo provided
    - All chalets with balconies and bathroom attached
    - Cold shower in older/smaller unit
    - Writing desk, clothes rack, mirror
    - Breakfast included in room rates
    - Dive centre
    - Internet and other communication facilities
    - Beach gear rental
    - Island tours
    - Ferry and boat arrangements

Directions: Have the boat or ferry drop you off at Panuba's jetty and you're there!

    Panuba Baech

    by

This is a small hotel it has no more than thirty bungalows, most of them with AC it is about half an hour walk from the airport, it is easy to reach but the last 10 minutes you have to walk a jungle trail, and even climb a litle. you can reach it more easily by boat. The place has its own beach and is the perfect place to rest an do nothing, if you like diving, there is a dive center to help you diving. I did my first dive with them it was great.

Unique Quality: Goo beach, not to far from other places but well apart from the noise. The perfect pleacefull place.

    Panuba Inn Resort

    by

Beautiful beach with a natural coral reef just metres away from the beach. It is more secluded from the rest of the villages. travelling by foot there is difficult and impossible at night as there is only an unlit jungle trail that takes 15-20 mins.

However, u can take a boat for RM$10 from ABC. This place is usually booked for divers.

Rates will be about RM$88 -155 per room.

Unique Quality: The view is not bad. In fact it was pretty nice. The room i was staying in had a balcony which turned into a bat feeding ground at night..

The TV sux coz there were 3 channels and the most interesting one keeps disconnecting...

Nothing special coz in Tioman, you'd be spending more time outside than inside.

Directions: Take the ferry from Mersing at bout RM$70.
