You get what you pay for

I paid 178SGD for a 3D2N package stay at Tioman Paya Resort. I knew that for the price I was paying, I shouldn't expect much at all, since it included the price of my stay, snorkelling for a day and all meals. I had intended to stay at Paya Beach Resort but they were fully booked so I decided to just give Tioman Paya Resort a try.

What I didn't expect was just how dirty the surroundings of the resort was. It was just a short walk away from the beach/jetty but you had to walk on this rickety old wooden bridge that looked like it was ready to give way anytime soon. There was a perpetual stench in the air because it was situated near a mangrove swamp, the rubbish strewn everywhere did not help either.

The inside of the chalet was ok, the wall fan worked well and the air-con cooled the room well. The beds are very soft, the blankets are very well-used and the toilet floor was constantly wet. If you are squirmish about bugs, beware of insects falling on you when you shower. I was out during the day but I imagine but it must be pretty unbearable if you were to stay in because the roofs were made of zinc and they absorb and trap alot of heat. Hot water was readily available, so no worries about being able to take a nice hot shower. Their towels smell well-used and were thin. You could only watch one channel on the TV, provided that it isn't raining.

The food was surprisingly good with a nice variety, save for the unwanted companionship of at least a dozen or so flies and a number of sickly-looking cats at every meal time. Dinners consisted of at least 1 type of seafood with another seafood/meat dish, 1 soup, 1 plate of vegetables and alot of rice.

If you are on a low budget and just want a place to sleep and be able to take a hot shower at the end of the day, and you aren't particular about musty smelling rooms or bugs then tioman paya resort is a good fit for you. If you are particular about what you sleep on then it's a good idea to fork out a little more and stay at Paya Beach Resort.

Tioman Paya Resort

At that time, this was a brand new resort. The village of Paya has 2 resorts - the Paya Beach Resort on the beach itself, and the Tioman Paya Resort slightly uphill. Wooden cabins (with ensuite showers) are the main type of lodging and I must say they are quite comfortable and rustic. There was little in the way of entertainment as there no TVs in the cabins.

Unique Quality: Rustic. I like the "kampong" feel of the cabins.
