This historic resthouse ("Rumah Rehat") of Taiping is converted into a hotel.
Accommodation is basic. During the British colonial era, there is a rest house built in all major towns in Perak, including in Taiping.
Location is excellent in downtown Taiping at the entrance to Taiping Lake. So you can walkabout town easily if you stay here.
This simple place is well located in the city centre not all that far from the local bus station. I first tried the Malay Hotel across the road which was fairly grim but had no hot water and so I came here and it was pretty similar but had hot water. The room was OK if a little small but clean with simple cheap looking furniture, a double bed, a TV that didn't really work and an old, noisy a/c unit in the window. The bathroom was minute with some kind of stone sink thing in the corner which I didn't understand what it would be used for. Washing clothes perhaps? Anyway, the staff are pretty transparent and I wouldn't really recommend the Thai place downstairs (see my restaurant tip). My room cost RM40 in Feb 2009.
