Budget accommodation - various: Budget accommodation on Chulia Street
The place for cheap, backpacker type accommodation is around Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street) where dorm beds can be had for as little as 7 Ringgits a night.
Chulia Street also has slightly more upmarket accommodation, as opposed to dorms. There are also lots of cheap cafes, internet places and travel agencies. It's a typical backpacker area in all respects.

Hotel Malaysia: Hotel Malaysia
A modern hotel that has been refurbished fairly recently. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The location is good with a lot of bars, restaurants and places of interest within easy walking distance.
My room rate was a very reasonable 69 ringgits.
