Travel Tips for George Town

Kids ...

by phil_uk_net

... they can be a devil running around hotel corridors screaming late at night when you are trying to sleep but at other times they have an innocence that most of us lost years ago.
At the Penang Deepavali festival free food was given out and these two are enjoying their free lunch. Who said there is no such thing?

George Town - Carnavon Street

by SLLiew

Lebuh Carnavon used to have beautiful plants in the middle of this two way street.

It was well known for the many book stores and many still survived. Also there used to be many coffin shops as well for fish aquariums. The three in a row shops dedicated to selling Chinese Taoist deities and paraphenalia is still there.

It is a short walk along from Komtar to Little India using Lebuh Carnavon. You will pass by the junction of Kimberly Street which is still a popular night hawker street. There is a nearby police station as well as Penang earliest wet market.

George Town - Leith Street

by SLLiew

Lebuh Leith is a diagonal two way street connecting Chulia Street and Light Street.

The Cheong Fatt Tze blue mansion dominates this street. There are several budget hotels along this street. There are also health massage clubs.

What is interesting that the row of buildings on this street is not parrallel to the street but to align to face the sea for better "fengshui" (Chinese geomancy).

The Art School cum Gallery is worth a look. The Hainanese Temple is also just around the corner.

Monday----The hostel is next to a main road so its very noisy. It is the cheapest accomodation yet at 8RM per night (6.5 to the pound)!!!!!!the owner is very helpful......Seems quiet a few brits here (6 in our 10 bed dorm) 3 of us went pictures at night about 10mins walk from the hostel......the town seems a bit dodgy some of the locals were giving us strange looks and shouting things at us going past us on their motorbikes...........Saw some big rats when walking back!!!! There are also lots more stray dogs than in any other malaysian town. Didnt get a lot of sleep at night due to traffic noise and people shouting outside. Tuesday--Got some clothes washing done. Went to penang hill in the afternoon with a bloke in my dorm room. It took us ages to get there. Took a train up the steep hill...very slow about 1 hour round trip....Dark by the time we got to the top but got a good view of the city. Saw 4 people from the last hostel we are all going the same direction it seems...Had early night.............

Wednesday--Sorted out next leg of the trip!!! Crossing the border into thailand tomorrow. Going Phuket town..found a well rated place to stop..Can't get a direct flight from here so its a 10 hour bus journey starting at 5am. Not looking forward to that.... Matthew
Wednesday night-4 of us went out to a local bar in george town. The first time in ages I have been to a proper pub. Got back about midnight but an austrian in our group stayed out until 3am even though we were leaving on the same bus at 5am Thursday-The austrian was still blind drunk on waking up I ended up having to put his bags in the bus. The bus trip was 3 mini bus trips with about 1 hours wait between each one. Crossed the thai border at 8:30 am. The landscape and towns dont look a lot different from malaysia. The roads got worse (bumpy) after crossing the border but the traffic got faster. Saw 4 at a time on 1 motorbike several times (with young kids on there)no crash helmets!!!!!! Unlike the mixture of different races in malaysia all the people here look the same. Taken the best part of 12 hours to get to phuket town the hostel was only 10 minutes walk from the bus station. Got hounded by at least 30 taxi+motor bike drivers in that time. Ended up crossing the street several times to avoid them. I refuse to use taxis out here anyway!!!! Its something I will have to get used to from now on. The hostel has not long opened--its one of the best I have seen since I came out here (a bit like the one in kuching....) Went the shop to stock up on water noticed everything here is cheaper than malaysia (beer is about 1/3 of the cost!!!!!!) The thai currency is easy to learn as 1 malaysian ringit=10 thai baht. Not thought about what to do tomorrow......having an early night after todays madness,,,,,,,,,,,,
