How would you like to stay in a UNESCO-awarded heritage house in Penang? It won't be everyday that you can tell folks back home that you've stayed in a 100-year old mansion that was owned by China's last Mandarin and Asia's first Rockefeller. Sure beats staying in one of those characterless and expensive hotels off the coast of Penang. Not only does this place have loads of character, it's also just opposite the clubbing area and in the heart of town. You can walk to the civic district from your hotel. It's just a lane away. I'll stay in this joint the next time I'm in town.
Honestly, Cheong Fatt Tze did not like look a hotel at all from the outside and we only discovered the 'homestay option' when we toured this blue-coloured mansion . Just before the tour ended, the caretaker told us that this mansion was also an 'upscale b and b' and showed us one of their many charming rooms . She also added that this joint was also opened to weddings that for RM14K? or more the whole mansion could be rented. Like the E and O, Cheong Fatt Tze has loads of character - gold awnings, ancient wooden shutters, ceremic relief and the works. Stay here if you dig history. Cost: RM 250 per room, including a "really heavy" breakfast (quoted from caretaker) Other good qualities:Located in the heart of town, near the clubbing and eating areas. If you're looking for a charming colonial hotel in Penang and don't mind paying a little more, this place has to be it. Unlike the touristy and characterless hotels that you find in Batu Ferringhi, the E and O has both history and charm. Everthing here brings back mind the past grandeur of the ol' times, the beautifully craved ceiling in the reception, the wood and gold pannelled bar lounge, the Engish tiled floor and the swimming pool area that overlooks the sea. Since it was built in 1885 by the Sarkies brothers, who also ran the legendary Raffles Hotel in Singapore, there are obvious similiarities in architecture and style.
The pool next to the seawall is like a secret sanctuary in Georgetown, especially in the nightime when the lights have dimmed to a soft whisper and the sea is black. I can imagine Great-Gatsby typed parties held here, lots of liquour, gentlemen in their black coats and bow ties and ladies in the feathers and long, loose dresses. I'm quite sure the Sarkies' brothers indulged in such parties over here... Other nice qualities about this place: 1) Situated in the heart of the City, near the clubbing area; 2) Really nice toilets; 3) Good service, the staff are always impeccably decked in bow ties and pressed suits. This hotel is quite ideal for a family getaway. It is popular with Arab, Japanese, Singaporean and local tourists. The room is spacious with a large balcony overlooking the sea front. Apart from the nice seaview, my room was on a high floor and looked down upon the Dalit International School next door (the school has its own swimming pool!) The furnishing is a bit old, but more than adequate, and the room is a studio styled room, complete with kitchen cabinets, kitchen sink, and a kitchen counter top for meals. The bed was comfortable, but there was no duvet, only a thin blanket. However, since it doesn't get too cold in Malaysia, we were comfortable. The king sized bed was just perfect for me and my two daughters. (My husband and our son wasn't along for this trip)
Bathroom comes with a full sized bath-tub and the hot & cold showers work just fine. Pool is a nice size for a lazy swim and there is also a reasonable kids pool. The terrace area facing the beach is pleasant and has deckchairs that are placed on the grassy area at the border of the hotel's grounds and the beach. The sea water is not that great, but a swim in the sea is possible and I did enjoy my swim there. The beachfront is nice for morning walks or a jog. The hotel offers banana boat rides, paragliding, and have jet skis and catamarans for hire. Horse rides are also available in the mornings (click on pics 3). I found the hotel buffet breakfast a dissapointment, except for the egg station, cereals, yoghurt and fresh fruit. Fortunately, there are other eating shops all within a 5-10 minute walking distance or you can take a bus or taxi to Gurney Drive, Batu Ferringhi or to Georgetown for more choices. Getting around The taxi to Batu Ferringhi was RM15 one way and to Gurney Drive between RM12-15 one way. For the time being, most taxis in Penang do not use the metered system and you would need to agree a fare beforehand. Taxi from the airport to this hotel is RM47.
